One thing I see often with studies involving thought, especially of the political kind, is the absence of views outside that of whatever parties hold majority in whatever Republic (or Westminster) system the country has. TLDR: Internet troll accidentally provoked one of the top powermods into revealing that he has been paid by reddit. Shitstorms erupt, accusations fly. Then a strange voice is caught on audio, which seems like it may belong to some form of corporate handler.

Last Wednesday Orion, a satirical podcaster known for his show TheGrillcast ([https://www.youtube.com/@TheGrillcast](https://www.youtube.com/@TheGrillcast)), managed to get himself onto the [r/antiwork](https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/) weekly community talk. He posed as an unemployed reddit moderator, and passionately argued that he was being exploited by reddit, and that all moderators should be paid for their labor. He faked tears while describing his grueling 18 hour a day moderating schedule, and at one point pretended to scream at his father for making too much noise.
The [r/antiwork](https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/) mods never figured out that he was trolling them. They debated his proposal for over an hour as Orion descended into stranger and stranger behavior.
The entire thing could have been forgotten as a harmless prank, but as the debate over moderator pay heated up, a couple of beans got spilled. One of the [r/antiwork](https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/) mods present at this talk is one of the top powermods on reddit. They are somewhat notorious for taking charge of the team immediately after the fox news debacle, which at the time spawned theories that he was some kind of clean up man for reddit, professional moderator, or intelligence asset.
During the debate he admitted that he had done some “paid contract work” for reddit, specifically involving data scraping. This was apparently news to the other mods, who didn't seem entirely happy with the idea. They argued, the powermod refused to elaborate further, and eventually the conversation moved on to other things.
On thursday Orion published the full interview on youtube, and then posted it to several niche communities he is known in.

They posted a complete thread with 23 different timestamps each highlighting bizarre and suspicious comments from the mods. Obviously the powermods admittance that he had been paid by reddit was stressed more than anything else. As I said, theories surrounding this particular mod have been commonplace for years and many saw this revelation as vindicating. The thread reached tens of thousands of views within hours.

Early Friday morning Orion awoke to frantic messages from the powermod, pleading that he join him for a hastily scheduled stream in an hour. The powermod wanted to “clarify some of his statements” and help to “alleviate misunderstandings”.
When the interview starts, the powermod immediately asserts in a tense tone that he wants to get this over with quickly, and then is interrupted mid-sentence by Orion, who basically just starts screwing with him. Between Orion's antics the powermod manages to succinctly state that his contract work for reddit was minimal and extremely ordinary, and then he spends several minutes ridiculing the idea that he could possibly be an intelligence asset. During the last turbulent moments of the interview, you can clearly hear a man’s voice saying “shut it down” twice. I’ve provided a clip above, and I think it is fairly indisputable. You can check it against the original recording to see that I have not tampered with the clip. As you can also see in the original video, there is no one in that voice chat other than the powermod and Orion. This leaves two possibilities. Either the voice is coming from some kind of speaker near the powermod, or it is coming from someone standing with him in the room.
What I find most disturbing about this voice is its tone. This certainly does not sound to me a friend or fellow mod frantically telling him to get out of a bad situation. It sounds to me like a professional giving a command. It seems possible to me that we just caught a glimpse of some form of corporate handler.
