Your post was removed by the moderators: Your post was removed because it is a very common question or post that is addressed in the /r/chess **[FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq)** and/or **[Online Resources](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/resources)** pages. Here is the relevant section: **[Why is this move brilliant? Why was my brilliant move post removed?](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq#wiki_why_is_this_move_brilliant.3F_why_was_my_brilliant_move_post_removed.3F)** We get a few people everyday trying to post [screenshots of brilliant moves](https://imgur.com/a/Z5dtGVl). We remove them because it breaks our "low-effort post" rule; the quantity of these posts means they would spam the subreddit significantly if they were not removed. However, because people often post these moves with the question "Why is this move brilliant", this is an attempt to provide a satisfactory explanation. In chess, "brilliant" has long been used to describe a move that knocks your opponent out of their chair: aesthetically beautiful or shocking, very difficult to spot, and backed up with deep concrete calculation. Of course, a move being aesthetically beautiful is very subjective. When chess.com uses an engine to analyze your game, it tries to identify moves that are "brilliant" in an objective way. It is not clear precisely what factors are used, but it has been suggested that it is given to moves when a deeper engine evaluation than the initial very fast analysis run by chess.com shows that a move made by the player gives a better evaluation than the one previously considered to be the "best move". Whatever definition is implemented by chess.com, it will often give "brilliant" to moves that are entirely forced, like [this one](https://i.imgur.com/Bx3rZIY.png) or [this one](https://i.imgur.com/ddpaysd.png) or normal looking moves that don't do anything special at all. The answer to "Why is this a brilliant move" in these cases is "It isn't". There is not a lot to discuss here; a computer program is trying to judge aesthetic value and sometimes gets it wrong. If you have more questions about a particular move, or brilliant moves in general, you are more than welcome to make text posts about them. However, screenshots of "brilliant" moves with no analysis, or posts that just ask why a particular move is "brilliant", will continue to be removed. A user has just created the new sub /r/brilliantchess in which those screenshots are welcome. You can read the full [rules of /r/chess here](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/rules?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=chess&utm_content=t5_2qhr7).

Absolutely insane that you are sitting here linking mod guidelines that you yourself have been linked to many, many times for the many, many times you've gone out of your way to attack and insult your own users on the sub you mod. You refuse to follow those guidelines, why should anyone follow them with you??? [Edit to add, the most recent example of you unloading on your users instead of engaging them in good faith.](https://old.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/kc69o1/meta_why_are_my_foils_are_warped_posts_allowed/gfrhp7z/) But it's not the only one - you have a very consistent habit of picking fights with your users whenever issues of moderation come up in your sub.

WOW Seriously, WOW Ubernostrum, the man who lets people use his own subreddit as a marketplace for cheap art pieces - a man who refuses to enforce reddit-wide rules on spam - a man who blocks and bans anyone who calls him out for his poor moderating - a man who has explicitly stated that he wants his sub to be an open market for spamming art sales. A man who has literally set up word filters to protect art sellers from criticism on his sub. A man who whines that nobody posts content, so he has to let art sellers spam his sub, and blames his sub's users for his inability to foster content and push out spam. A man who rarely even comments on his own sub unless it is to attack his own users. A man who whines and cries that he can't fix his subreddit rules - he can't fix his subreddit's useless tag system - he can't do any of those things because it's hard, and if only the users would give him suggestions - except, wait, no, he will literally ban you from the sub for giving him suggestions. Ubernostrum, of all people, wants to complain about "favortism and bias and other problems in modding" of someone else's subreddit???? Uber, you hypocritical sack of balls storing pee, how about you focus on your own sub's MASSIVE issues with moderation rather than attacking other people. Edit to add: you even had the **audacity** to link the mods to the reddit guidelines for moderation - which you repeatedly, flagrantly, and gleefully ignore in your *own* community - guideliness which you have been linked to **multiple times** yet still refuse to follow. You are truly a piece of work.

Favoritism, bias and other problems in modding of /r/chess... againI'm not going to bother with a wordy intro, so let's just jump straight into things. Consider [this comment](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmmj4dp/) posted here yesterday. It's something you'd unfortunately expect to see on a lot of internet forums, but you'd also expect it to be quickly cleaned up by the moderators. Except it wasn't. It's a clear violation of [rules 1 and 2 in this subreddit's rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/rules), yet there it is, still up as I write this, and it even has an equally-awful reply beneath it now. [Here's a screenshot](https://i.imgur.com/Qo8zuaH.png) for the day when, hopefully, both comments will no longer be visible. Leaving it up was an explicit decision by this subreddit's moderators, who approved it to remain after it was reported to them, and who [informed me when I asked about it that](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmmxd5i/): > The comment my fellow mod approved (he actually consulted us and we discussed it) is a criticism of a public figure. Rule 1 only applies to behavior between users, and that's between specific users. Saying "fans of [whomever] are [insulting adjective]" is also not a violation of rule 1, it's a statement about a general group of people. The mod who actually approved it (easy enough to find out, because [they publish the mod logs](https://rbtc.live/modlogs/?sub=chess)) also [weighed in](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmnbk6l/): > I didn’t just approve it and forget about it. I thought something like “Wow, that’s sexist, remove. Wait, if they said a man was sucking someone’s dick, I probably wouldn’t remove that. But maybe saying a man is sucking someone’s dick is just being vulgar, but saying it about a woman is genuinely denigrating because it implies she slept her way to her current position. I had better ask the other mods to weigh in instead of removing it silently so we can refer to it later the next time similar comments are made”. Let me now start properly: the fact that the comment was allowed to stand is an absolute disgrace. That these two moderators then doubled down on their decision beggars belief and shows an utter lack of competence at the fairly basic task of moderating a subreddit. But, of course, it's worse than this, because it's not just one comment or one horrific justification. Let's walk through this, and a few other examples. First of all, it's alleged that this is OK because "criticism of a public figure" is allowed. Despite having been condescendingly lectured by one of the mods in question about ["common sense"](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmnfwcq/), I find myself unable to see just how the comment in question would qualify as "criticism". I also was unable to find any explicit reference to this "public figure" exception anywhere in the subreddit's rules, nor was my "common sense" able to find any implied exception from reviewing the rule. Here's the text of rules 1 and 2 as they existed at that time: > **Keep the discussion civil and friendly.** > > We welcome people of all levels of experience, from novice to professional. Don't make fun of new players for not knowing things. In a discussion, there is always a respectful way to disagree. > > **Don’t engage in abusive, discriminatory, or bigoted behavior.** > > Chess is a game played by people all around the world of many different cultures and backgrounds. Be respectful of this fact and do not engage in racist, sexist, or otherwise discriminatory behavior. Reading the text makes it even more clear that the comment in question should not be allowed. As the rule says: "[i]n a discussion, there is always a respectful way to disagree", and supposing we take the comment as "disagreement", there is nothing respectful whatsoever about it. And failing to find the exception about "public figures" shouldn't be surprising, because of course there is no such exception. Even if there were, it would be incoherent to try to distinguish between "public figures" and "users" -- plenty of chess figures are reddit users and have participated in this subreddit. Which means this reeks of a retroactive justification for something the mods in question knew was wrong. And the subsequent discourse about "well what if they said it about a man" is incredibly revealing, because *there is no context in which this comment would have been OK*. Not when said by any person, not when said to or about any person. But that wasn't the only odd thing going on in that thread. Consider [this chain of comments](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmibit5/). This is the one that was alleged to be OK because "it's a statement about a general group of people" and so doesn't violate rule 1. Not even the later escalation where the user makes clear that they're here to go after other users of this subreddit (and -- surprise! -- the comment chain has a string of approvals in the mod log). Of course, neither rule 1 nor rule 2 contain *that* exception, either. In fact, rule 2 seems to be quite clearly declaring attacks based on "general groups of people" as off-limits. But this is /r/chess, where apparently the rules come with annotations and exceptions written in invisible ink in the margins. And as someone with a fair bit of reddit modding experience myself, I will note here that I've seen users offer post-hoc rationalizations for their behavior that could win Olympic gymnastics medals, but these explanations are more like face-planting ten feet short of the parallel bars. Meanwhile, notice [this](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmls8li/)? It's one of those same two mods, replying to a now-removed comment and admonishing the user. What was that removed comment? It was digging through the parent commenter's post history to snarkily reply "This you bro?" and point out a perceived fault. The user who made that "This you bro?" comment had been [on the receiving end of exactly the same treatment, with exactly the same wording](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmitex6/), earlier that day. The mods left that other one up a good long while despite being made aware of it, and in fact one of the same two mods [defended it](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/ldruv8/event_opera_euro_rapid_preliminaries/gmmzj8x/). It was *finally* removed by one of the night shift who, one presumes, didn't get the message. But I'm curious as to whether this was another "public figure" exception (though I have no idea who that user is), or perhaps that first "This you bro?" was interpreted as referring generally to, say, people from one of [the multiple populated places in Sweden named "Bro"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bro#Places) and thus was not *truly* a user-on-user attack. At any rate, I could go on at some length just from the Opera Euro Rapid thread yesterday, or from plenty of other threads both old and recent in this subreddit, but this is not an isolated problem and anyone who reads this subreddit regularly knows it. I can think of some choice words of "criticism" to offer to the "general group of people" otherwise known as the mod team of this subreddit -- who perhaps even are "public figures", though I doubt very much whether any of those exceptions would be so kindly extended to *me*, were I to write those words of "criticism" here. But that, in a nutshell, is the problem. This subreddit's rules are clearly not enforced as written, nor are they enforced with even an attempt at consistency and fairness. They are enforced in a manner that shows clear bias and favoritism. We all know exactly why that first comment was made, why it was made about that specific streamer, and why it used the language it did. Not much "common sense" at all is needed to work out the causes. And we all know why the other chain, and multiple other comments in that thread yesterday, attacked "fangirls" of a certain other streamer as their epithet of choice. The amount of "common sense" that the good Lord gave to the average sea-urchin would suffice to puzzle out either or both. Nor is much "common sense" needed to understand that the real import of the rules as enforced is that you can insult, attack, and disrespect people, individually or in groups, as much as you like here, so long as you choose the right targets. And not only will you receive the blessing of the mod team, you'll receive their explicit protection. This subreddit experienced a significant turnover of its mod team once, due to the mere perception of *possible* bias on the part of one moderator. Here we have not just perception and possibility, but clear actual bias laid out in the open for all to see, favoritism and selective enforcement on full, ugly, public display. Choose the right target and the mods will bend over backwards finding unwritten loopholes and exceptions in the rules to let you get away with whatever you like. Choose the wrong target, and you get something rather sharper in return. And worst of all: chess is enjoying an incredible boom of popularity right now, and this should be a high point for this subreddit. Yet some people here are, for reasons surpassing understanding, unhappy about that, and have turned incredibly nasty in expressing their displeasure at newcomers (against the rules, but happens on a regular basis anyway) and at some of the very "public figures" who've helped to grow the popularity of the game over the past year. Others are and always have been simply the same type of ordinary internet asshole -- remember, mods, I'm talking about "a general group of people", so this is all right! -- who stain virtually every place with their presence (also against the rules, but also happens on a regular basis anyway), unless and until shown the door. Both will need to learn to live with disappointment, if this subreddit wants to continue being a hub for the discussion and enjoyment of our ever-more-broadly-popular game. So this cannot stand. That the initial comment I mentioned way back at the start of this post was allowed to remain up is a shame and a disgrace on this subreddit and its mod team. It must go, the reply to it must go, and the authors of those comments must go. The two mods who committed and then defended this misconduct have shown their clear unfitness for the role, and they too must go. Whether they go by resignation or by removal makes little difference, but go they must, and they must not be eligible for reinstatement for a good long while. Rules 1 and 2 of this subreddit must be enforced, as written, without fear or favor, and without regard for whether the mods consider some particular person or group to be an acceptable target, because there are no acceptable targets for this behavior and this behavior is never acceptable. Plenty of small children in kindergarten have the necessary "common sense" to figure *that* out. So too should the moderators of /r/chess. Finally I will note that, as I mentioned above, I do have some experience as a subreddit moderator, including in at least one subreddit that is currently larger than this one. One would think this would give me sympathy for the position of the moderators here, but no: I am known there for my absolute hard-line stance on its equivalents of this subreddit's rules 1 and 2, and for cheerfully inviting trolls and assholes not to let the door hit them as they are shown out. I know from experience that this works, and that significant cleanup of a subreddit's culture is possible. But I also will say, to be absolutely clear, that it is a mere coincidence that the thing which finally prompted me to write this occurred as a call for mods was up in this subreddit, and I am not seeking to, nor will I ever seek to, become a moderator here. I've got plenty on my hands as-is, and simply want this to be a pleasanter place for everyone, myself included, to read about and discuss this game we all enjoy.

yeah he pretty much missed every point and focused on the wrong thing consistently...... It's pretty clear he was unaware of the 'spirit' of this tournament, and figured sure i'll play an amateur chess tournament and win some money for a good cause. Played a flawless first game, chats to his opponent afterwards and finds out she's played chess for less than 2 months, slowly realizes this is not a normal chess tournament and that he's maybe unfairly overqualified. starts throwing the game while being supportive and encouraging like a father would. he's definitely in a situation where he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. no scenario ends in 'holy shit dwight kicks ass at chess that's awesome.' instead it's only 'oh great, old man bullying kids' or 'old man being condescending to kids'....feel bad for him, and wouldn't be surprised if he pulled out of the tournament. in any case he *obviously* threw those moves on purpose trying to even the odds a bit and prolong the games. not for 'content' but out of decency.

Hey this is an awesome thread! I am rated ~1600 rapid of chess.com and had my first loss today as white when my opponent played 1... C6. I went for the advanced short Variation, thinking it could probably turn out OK for me as I like to play the advanced french, with f4 being a factor of development in that game style. He managed to connect his rooks and pull too many threats on my seconds to rank, which kept my knights retreating and getting tied up with various pins- it was fascinating. After the game I checked out a few variations on YouTube, and eventually decided that next time it occurs that I will play the advanced Tal variation. This game would be a good study for the both of us and I would gladly set up a 5 or 7 days per move chess game with you that we can study together. If you like you can reach out to me on chess.com my tag is Count_Zer0 and we can set up a few games to study the lines over time :) Good for you, All the best

You are shadowbanned. This means that none of your posts or comments are visible to other users unless a moderator manually approves them (which they usually don't). The people who shadowbanned your account are the reddit admins, not the subreddit moderators. This means I have no power to undo the ban, and don't even know why you are banned. If you want to find out more information, go to /r/shadowban. Why am I telling you this? Because in 2016, the admins promised that they [would stop shadowbanning real people](https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/3sbrro/account_suspensions_a_transparent_alternative_to/). This was a complete lie and they still shadowban people all the time. Any time I see a real person (not a spambot) who has been shadowbanned, I let them know. You can't private message shadowbanned users so I leave it as a comment.

Chess is thought of positively by wider society, it's the regs who play it are the ones that realize it's full of degens >Again, I usually have pretty thick skin, but it sucks because these guys don't realize how much influence titled players have Lol, mate nobody could give a fuck about chess titles. No way I'd say that I'm not justifying that. There's a big difference in tone between "what a cockroach" and the op quote. I hope you realize. As for irl, after a dirty game I may very well say, "that was a bit ugly" but I won't tell anyone cockroach, that's true. And now, the question, don't you know when you or someone are being an ass in a game of chess? I must be paranoid then. Do you really think that spoken word is the only way to insult ? And shall I swallow your ways? In real life it's unusual to have someone keep playing a lost position, or keep offering draw in a lost position, and wasting all the time he has on the clock, it's unusual like it's unusual that you tell you opponent go fxck yourself, and while legal, that's what you are doing , on a 90 minutes game, when you know your rival has to take a train back home, and it's dark and you are down a rook and a knight with no chances, and you keep asking for draw and letting the clock run. I've had that happen and my friend almost having to book a hotel room because he was choosing to win the game and miss the train back home. Well that's insult on the board , and I will murmur son of a bitch loud enough that you listen.

On the other hand... if you would like to have a subreddit where all language must be kid friendly and family appropriate, go start one yourself. I'd have to check with the other mods, but most likely we'd be happy to link it in the sidebar and help you out. You can also make sure that each rule you have is 10,000 words long and covers every possible nuance and edge case. Then, if you don't do a good enough job enforcing them consistently, you can resign yourself! Good fun!

Another guy wants some anal censorship on everything, you can't use vulgar slang, you can't offend, also don't post too much puzzles, don't do this, don't do that.... Seriously? Get lost. You are exactly the type of people I really despise, who get offended or trying to play being offended card with basically anything. Subreddit is good as it is. You just need to remove obviously inappropriate content, spam and stuff like this and this will be more than enough. If anything strict moderation is worse than no moderation, I've learned it at /r/leagueoflegends, where week w/o mods actually was one of the most enjoyable times at this sub ever.

I’m conflicted on leaving this up because 1) Kasparov never called her a “circus player” as far as I can tell, and if you put something in quotes it means they said those exact words. 2) Kasparov absolutely made sexist comments, so the main thrust of the image is true. He said things like “there is real chess and women’s chess”, “She’s helpless if she has men’s opposition”, and “Women are weaker fighters.” Later he apologized for saying these things. If I leave it up, people will accuse me of slandering Kasparov. If I remove it, people will accuse me of trying to cover up sexism in the chess world and using the minor detail of his exact phrasing as an excuse. I am leaving it up, flairing it “misquoting kasparov”, and stickying this context. This way I can be accused of both! Hopefully someone can just give a real source for if he actually said “circus player”.

If you play those, you've played a sicilian. Very possibly a bad sicilian or one that transposes, but it's always a sicilian. > Your comment about ruy lopez no matter what makes no sense Okay, try to dumb it down... If you play e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Bb5, *you have played the ruy lopez*. This shit about 'beginners play 3 moves = 15% of an opening' is nonsense and just factually incorrect. If you were trying to say that beginners don't have all book moves of an opening memorised, sure, completely correct. But the level of arrogance you're bringing to a discussion in which you're factually incorrect is laughable. >i feel like you are the type of person to put words in someone's mouth and then rattle off a bunch of things to muddy the conversation Is it your goal to come off as a cunt? Is CHESS a flawed game?Recently, I started to learn playing chess and I absolutely love it! However, I found out today that players as black have lower chance of winning even for grand masters like Magus Carlsen. If black has a lower chance of winning, isn't it unfair? Is Chess flawed? Shouldn't we do something about it like changing the rules to make the winning chance equal for both white and black?

Baseball historian Daniel Okrent said of Ty Cobb: "In his totality, he is an embarrassment to baseball." Could a similar statement apply to Bobby Fischer?I'm not sure on which side of this I fall, but I think it's an interesting comparison. Both were 2 of the greats of their respective sports but both also had...well, issues to say the least. Are these issues enough to detract from their accomplishments on the field/over the board?

I would recommend Lasker's Manual of Chess or Tarrasch's The Game of Chess. They are both complete guides to chess and although they are quite old, they have a lot of value. The originals are not in algebraic notation but newer editions can be found if you want. Other than that, reddit has a good faq for other books

Has Chess.com changed how their analysis awards brilliant moves?I’ve been playing chess for a few months now and had never gotten a ‘brilliant’ move before, but today I got brilliant moves in 2 games in a row. I was really proud of my ‘brilliant’ move in the first game as it was a rook sacrifice leading to a forced mate in 4. But in my second game it was just me pushing the correct pawn to scrape a draw out of a losing endgame. Which was a distinctly less impressive ‘brilliancy’. And in hindsight, I think it seems likely that Chess.com has just changed their system for allocating ‘brilliant’ moves. (I also saw a YouTuber post a video entitled their first brillant chess move, so that could also be indicative of this) Has anyone else found this to be the case?

Unpopular Opinion (?): this subreddit would be substantially better if people would just scroll past puzzles and other posts they dislike rather than asking the mods to ban all puzzles and other posts they don’t fancy. This is a bit of a mockery of the top post from yesterday. Puzzles are a big part of learning chess and happen to be the only reason I come to this subreddit. Nobody is forcing you to click on them and if you do want to solve them, nobody is forcing you to click on them and see the solution until you solve it. I think a lot of questions people ask are kind of silly. For example, “I’m not good and thinking about quitting. Is there anything I can do to get better?” I would never ask that mods ban these questions because this is literally a chess subreddit. Scroll past things you don’t care to see. Be an adult. Don’t open the solutions to puzzles if you want to solve it first. We don’t need to ban things than some people don’t like. Puzzles are such a silly thing to complain about and ask mods to start banning. Don’t some of you have bigger things to worry about in life than scrolling past chess puzzles? What some of you consider easy puzzles, someone else might find difficult. You need to remember that there are people ranked significantly lower than you starting out that enjoy easy puzzles. I remember when I started! I was happy to find checkmate in one move with a knight, for instance. Some of you vocal people here would’ve made me feel awful for finding the solution. Edit: It’s kind of silly this needs to be said, but everyone sometimes needs to remember, it’s just a board game at the end of the day. That’s it. It’s fun. Have fun. There’s no right or wrong way to learn to play chess if you’re having fun. To those that say we should moderate puzzles so bad puzzles aren’t posted...you’re asking the moderators to solve every puzzle and then make a determination of whether it’s good or bad. Some people are ranked 100. We get that you might be 2700 and think all puzzles except mate in 13 are easy, but you have to remember there are people with ratings all over the place. Lastly, if you didn’t know, you can filter out puzzles if you don’t want to see them since posts have flairs here. Easy peasy.

Do you have a source on that? Source? A source. I need a source. Sorry, I mean I need a source that explicitly states your argument. This is just tangential to the discussion. No, you can't make inferences and observations from the sources you've gathered. Any additional comments from you MUST be a subset of the information from the sources you've gathered. You can't make normative statements from empirical evidence. Do you have a degree in that field? A college degree? In that field? Then your arguments are invalid. No, it doesn't matter how close those data points are correlated. Correlation does not equal causation. Correlation does not equal causation. CORRELATION. DOES. NOT. EQUAL. CAUSATION. You still haven't provided me a valid source yet. Nope, still haven't. I just looked through all 308 pages of your user history, figures I'm debating a glormpf supporter. A moron.

Just FYI, the mods are reading the feedback and discussing this currently. We have a few options to consider - Changing the rules around puzzles - Consolidating them in a puzzle sticky thread - Doing a trial week of nuking all puzzles to see if it's feasible and what the sub would look like. - Doing some kind of user referendum Hopefully we have something to say about this later today. If you support or hate one of these options specifically, feel free to voice your opinion.

Discord server chess clubSo I made a post earlier today to see if anyone wanted an online discord chess club. Even though there are other chess clubs being run at the moment it seems a fair amount of people would like a new one smaller one. So if anyone want's to join then here's the invite link to the discord server [https://discord.gg/dwJeXNQW9B](https://discord.gg/dwJeXNQW9B) Have a look at my older post for more details. But basically this will be a chess club where we will run tournaments, have leader boards, share puzzles and games and even challenge/help each other with chess games.

Would anyone be interested in a chess club discord server? The title says it all really. If people wanted I could set up a discord server as a chess club. We could even have separate rooms based on ratings, we could run tournaments regularly, have a club master etc. People could also come to a dedicated room in the server to ask for help with anylizing a game or an opening etc. So yeah if you guys would be interested then let me know by commenting or dm-ing me and then I'll create one Edit: So even though there are other chess clubs being run at the moment it seems a fair amount of people would like a new one smaller one. Your post was removed by the moderators: Hi! The position that you posted is an example of [stalemate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalemate). This is when the side to move has no legal moves, but their king is not in check. The game ends in a draw. Because it is similar to checkmate but results in a draw instead of a win, this rule is often confusing for new players. To avoid stalemate next time, make sure that when you are getting close to checkmate, you make sure the king has at least one legal move to make until you're ready to deliver checkmate. [You can read our FAQ page](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq#wiki_why_is_this_position_a_stalemate.2C_and_not_a_checkmate.3F) for a further explanation. [You can also practice identifying stalemate for free on lichess](https://lichess.org/learn#/16). Because this question is posted so often in the subreddit and usually gets the same answers, we removed your post. If you still have questions about stalemate, you can reply to this comment and the moderators will reapprove your post. You can read the full [rules of /r/chess here](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/rules?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=chess&utm_content=t5_2qhr7).

The false correlation between chess and intelligence is the reason a lot of players, beginners especially, have such negative emotional responses to losing.I've seen a ton of posts/comments here and elsewhere from people struggling with anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions due to losing at chess. I had anxiety issues myself when I first started playing years ago. I mostly played bots because I was scared to play against real people. I've been thinking about what causes this, as you don't see people reacting so negatively to losses in other board games like Monopoly. I think the false link between chess and intelligence, mostly perpetuated by pop culture, could possibly be one of the reasons for this. Either consciously or subconsciously, a lot of players, especially beginners, may believe they're not improving as fast as they'd like because they aren't smart enough. When they lose, it's because they got "outsmarted." These kinds of falsehoods are leading to an ego bruising every time they lose. Losing a lot could possibly lead to anxiety issues, confidence problems, or even depression in some cases. In movies, TV shows, and other media, whenever the writers want you to know a character is smart, they may have a scene where that character is playing chess, or simply staring at the board in deep thought. It's this kind of thing that perpetuates the link between chess and being smart. In reality, chess is mostly just an experience/memorization based board game. Intelligence has little to nothing to do with it. Intelligence may play a very small part in it at the absolutely highest levels, but otherwise I don't think it comes into play much at all. There are too many other variables that decide someone's chess potential. Let's say you take two people who are completely new to chess, one has an IQ of 100, the other 140. You give them the both the objective of getting to 1500 ELO. The person with 150 IQ may possibly be able to get to 1500 a little faster, but even that isn't for certain, because like I said, there are too many other variables at play here. Maybe the 100 IQ guy has superior work ethic and determination, and outworks the other guy in studying and improving. Maybe he has superior pattern recognition, or better focus. You see what I mean. All in all, the link between chess and intelligence is at the very least greatly exaggerated. It's just a board game. You get better by playing and learning, and over time you start noticing certain patterns and tactical ideas better. Just accept the fact you're going to lose a lot of games no matter what(even GMs lose a lot of games), and try and have fun. *Edit: I think I made a mistake with the title of this post. I shouldn't have said "false correlation." There is obviously some correlation between intelligence and almost everything we do. A lot of people in the comments are making great points and I've adjusted my opinion some. My whole purpose for this post was to give some confidence to people who have quit, or feel like quitting, because they believe they aren't smart enough to get better. I still believe their intelligence is almost certainly not what's causing their improvement to stall. Thanks for the great dialogue about this. I hope it encourages some people to keep playing.*

Well she basically said no one plays chess and the attention she’s getting is because the chess community is “being so kind because someone finally likes their game” and the chess scene is like a dried out desert and she’s saving it and yada yada so yes I think they should remove the WGM title. Disrespectful to actual WGM’s too. Work your whole life to get a title and some random streamer gets it and does not even appreciate the position she’s in. Getting coached by Hikaru and playing in a $100,000 tournament when GM’s are homeless. I know the attention is good for chess but she should understand the position she’s in and respect it

Should I swap to Lichess? So I started with chess because of Northernlion, went to chess.com cause there's where he plays. "OOOH this website has amazing analysis that shows me the arrows and screams at me when I mess up" I thought. Then it hits me with the "1 analysis per day". Same for puzzles, puzzle rush, puzzle battle. From what I can tell, lichess has all of those free. My question is basically: Am I correct that lichess has all of those for free, and is it worth it swapping to lichess in your opinion. Also inb4 anybody tries suggesting it: I'm not buying premium.

What's the deal with chess.com?I was primarily playing on Lichess and managed to gradually reach 1500 score where I am quite happy to play. I thought I will log into [chess.com](https://chess.com) and give that a shot. What I noticed: 1. Every single time I play e4 opening with white I play against the Philidor defence. Every. Single. Time. I never encocuntered this in Lichess, I usually could play an Evan's gambit, Fried Liver and stuff like that but on this website it's Philidor defence. I would say that's 90% of what I encounter. No one ever plays four knights for example. At this low ELO I would expect to see it much more (1200-1500). 2. My score dropped to below 1300 and users always have an accuracy of 95% - the 1200 players seem to be insanely good compared to lichess. It was weird that the player's repertoire differs so much between the two websites. Am I extrapolating or there is an actual gap in abilities not reflecting the ELO scores between the two websites?

You can still prep yourself for the endgame so that you aren't completely lost when it comes. Sign up for lichess and use their endgames puzzle motif. (note that you have to use the website, not a mobile app, to pick motifs) You can also use the lichess study section to search for checkmate patterns if you don't have them memorized for at least the basics. The lone rook, two rooks, lone queen, and queen and rook combos are the most common and similar enough to learn all of them before the match. If you have Capablanca's book he gives great lessons on the endgame as well, including the mentioned mating patterns.

Funny how you choose to play 1...c6 every time as if it was a system that lets you avoid a chunk of theory... And then you willingly transpose into the semi-slav which is a theoretical hell full of unintuitive moves. Why not play a normal slav?

Amazon board too good to be true? (Amerous wooden travel board)Firstly, I just want to say that I've read through the FAQ and am aware of most of the big popular websites such as House of Staunton for wooden chess sets. The fact is I'm a student and I just can't afford their products at the moment, and I was really hoping to get a wooden board for at most $50, ideally one which would be decent for travelling. Anyways, [this board on Amazon seems perfect for me](https://www.amazon.com/Amerous-Inches-Magnetic-Wooden-Chess/dp/B07N5ZS5QP/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=chess+set&qid=1610071381&sr=8-3#customerReviews). It's a good size (doesn't say by square width, but it's15x15 inches), the reviews are great, pieces look to be in a nice style, lightly magnetic which makes up for them being pretty light. It just looks like a great deal at only $43, which is less than even the cheapest wooden board (with no pieces) from House of Staunton, so I was wondering if any of you had experience with it.

2021 and they still haven't patched this nonsense. Also, to clarify, it's actually 2 bugs in one. You try to move the pawn up one space, and it moves two. Then the opponent can take your pawn as if you only moved one space. You can argue that the second bug fixes the first, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Definitely overrated. There were things I liked about it, but it's clearly made more for people who don't know chess well. The idea of getting high to improve your game is laughable to begin with. But that aside, most of the chess stuff just didn't resonate as being inspired by true experience, more like copying things they've heard about it. The one part I thought was on point was her bathroom break where she was freaking out and had to calm herself down, the one time where taking a sedative might have actually had a positive effect. I've had two tournaments where nerves destroyed my game.

Yes it definitely does. I started using chessable quite recently for exactly the stuff you mentioned (endgames, openings and in particular the sicilian) and it is really fun and useful to me. I didn’t spend any money on it yet and still got some fine lectures. There are free lectures on many Sicilians with about 30 variations each and they explain everything quite well. For the endgames I only tried one course yet but it I taught me much already anyways. I’m not too high rated whatsoever (1400 chess.com) and so I’m not all that deep in the matter and if you want to go very deep into either of the subjects you might have to pay some money. For that there are sales quite frequently and I think the courses would be worth it, compared to books or lessons that would cost money too. Also there is Video Material in most courses, also in the free ones. Greetings

Yes pretty much. Chose either one of lichess or chess.com or just get both. You can play on almost any time control and don’t have to wait too long for games. Besides playing chess itself both sites have good features for analyzing, tactics, etc. Some features are better on lichess some features are better on chess.com so I recommend using both if you don’t just want to play. Oh and on lichess all features are freely accessible and on chess.com some features are not but for just playing and rather basic stuff chess.com works alright without paying for a membership(I haven’t done so either). So have fun playing

Even beginners can beat first computer levels. There are 4 game modes: 1. "Rules of chess" for beginners 2. "Play vs computer" 3. "Solve puzzles" 4. Confirms that bullshit crawls out of your eyes and that's all you can see. Your argument is that since a subset individual thematic elements of the problem have measurable value that the entire problem, by extension, has value. This doesn't invalidate the premise that this problem is unrealistic. Your problem is that you're observing consistency and creating a biased presumption, ignoring the premise.

Aren't you the one who's arguing that the whole is equal to the sum of its parts, then? You seem to be saying the the problem only has value if every part of it is useful/realistic. I'm saying it can have value even if the premise is unrealistic.
