Please fix the FAQWhat I mean is this: > Is it too late for me to become a grandmaster? > >Yes. Such an answer is only true for some people, not for all. I understand why it was written like this. Someone was thinking about all the posts like "Is it too late for me to become a grandmaster, I am 27" and was trying to prevent more of them appearing. The reasoning also might have been: "If you have to ask whether you can, then you can't". But the thing is, FAQ is read precisely by the people who don't ask! They are less likely to create low effort posts. This might be read by some 12 year old and he or she won't understand the actual reasons why such thing was included in the FAQ. Young people are even more insecure about their abilities and potential than adults, please don't discourage them like that.

We Want You: Mod Applications OpenHi everyone! Our sub has really grown the past few months - obviously first due to PogChamps, then Queen's Gambit. At 300,000 subs, having seven moderators is a bit lower than we'd like to have. So, we're looking for some applications! **Who, Me?:** Yes, you! We're especially interested if you live in Eastern Asia / Australia, but also could use some additional coverage across time zones, so we're keeping the search pretty open. **What's Required?** We have a Moderator Discord that we are relatively active on - we post any bans on there to also track bans, we discuss any modmail that comes in, and general chat. So, we do require you have Discord and use it with some general frequency. Otherwise, it's general checking the Mod Queue, approving/removing posts, and being open to take feedback. **What Do You Need From Me?**: If you're interested, please click >>[**this link**](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdicF6PDSe5588B7EvlkqST10co13IUHEiK2xsb87SLR17KnQ/viewform?usp=sf_link) << to answer the following questions: * A statement that you are not affiliated with any chess site (Chess.com, Chess24, Lichess). This includes being a moderator, volunteer, coder, or paid staffer. If we find out that you are, we will have to remove you. * What time zone you are and what times are you generally on Reddit. * Why you want to be a moderator. * A link to a post or comment in the last three months you made in /r/chess.

Toxicity on Lichess from an International Master. Is there any real recourse? (NSFW Screenshot Attached)I'm a fairly high-rated bullet player on Lichess. There is a fair amount of toxicity that I need to put up with when I win, especially if I flag an opponent. (3 direct messages in the last 16 hours containing very vulgar stuff). Usually if I don't get blocked, I have fun replying but yesterday was different. It was the first time in playing chess that a Titled Player insulted me post-match. I don't know about other players here, but the few times I get to play a titled player, I get excited knowing that I am against some of the best players in the world. To have an International Master behave the way he did online is a disgrace to chess. I reported him to Lichess but I don't know if anything came out of it. Does anyone know if Lichess or Chess.com notifies players if their reports are successful when it comes to non-cheating reports? Again, I usually have pretty thick skin, but it sucks because these guys don't realize how much influence titled players have. To Lichess' credit, they have a kid mode which disables this kind of harassment and that on the internet we are all used to this kind of stuff. Can the popular chess sites at least notify us if a player gets another player muted based on their reports? NSFW Screenshot: https://imgur.com/gXv0YPq Edit: Replaced Screenshot with a version that doesn't show his name. I definitely do not want people going out of their way to make this guy's life miserable.

This subreddit isn’t for kids and we can hardly censor the subreddit so aggressively that it is guaranteed to be kid friendly. If you don’t want your kid to see vulgarity, don’t let them use reddit at all. You can find more offensive comments on any random post on the front page, along with actual pornography.

Your post was removed by the moderators: **Low-effort submissions are not allowed.** We remove milestones and achievements posts when they are just a low-effort image post, or text post with no annotated games. Including but not limited to: Rating graphs, checkmates, chess.com "brilliant" moves, engine evaluation graphs, screenshot of "blunders/mistakes/inaccuracies" stats, "I just hit X rating!", etc. Your post was removed because it is a very common question or post that is addressed in the /r/chess **[FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq)** and/or **[Online Resources](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/resources)** pages. Here is the relevant section: **[Why is this move brilliant? Why was my brilliant move post removed?](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq#wiki_why_is_this_move_brilliant.3F_why_was_my_brilliant_move_post_removed.3F)** We get a few people everyday trying to post [screenshots of brilliant moves](https://imgur.com/a/Z5dtGVl). We remove them because it breaks our "low-effort post" rule; the quantity of these posts means they would spam the subreddit significantly if they were not removed. However, because people often post these moves with the question "Why is this move brilliant", this is an attempt to provide a satisfactory explanation. In chess, "brilliant" has long been used to describe a move that knocks your opponent out of their chair: aesthetically beautiful or shocking, very difficult to spot, and backed up with deep concrete calculation. Of course, a move being aesthetically beautiful is very subjective. When chess.com uses an engine to analyze your game, it tries to identify moves that are "brilliant" in an objective way. It is not clear precisely what factors are used, but it has been suggested that it is given to moves when a deeper engine evaluation than the initial very fast analysis run by chess.com shows that a move made by the player gives a better evaluation than the one previously considered to be the "best move". Whatever definition is implemented by chess.com, it will often give "brilliant" to moves that are entirely forced, like [this one](https://i.imgur.com/Bx3rZIY.png) or [this one](https://i.imgur.com/ddpaysd.png) or normal looking moves that don't do anything special at all. The answer to "Why is this a brilliant move" in these cases is "It isn't". There is not a lot to discuss here; a computer program is trying to judge aesthetic value and sometimes gets it wrong. If you have more questions about a particular move, or brilliant moves in general, you are more than welcome to make text posts about them. However, screenshots of "brilliant" moves with no analysis, or posts that just ask why a particular move is "brilliant", will continue to be removed. A user has just created the new sub /r/brilliantchess in which those screenshots are welcome. You can read the full [rules of /r/chess here](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/rules?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=chess&utm_content=t5_2qhr7).

You are shadowbanned. This means that none of your posts or comments are visible to other users unless a moderator manually approves them (which they usually don't). The people who shadowbanned your account are the reddit admins, not the subreddit moderators. This means I have no power to undo the ban, and don't even know why you are banned. If you want to find out more information, go to /r/shadowban. Why am I telling you this? Because in 2016, the admins promised that they [would stop shadowbanning real people](https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/3sbrro/account_suspensions_a_transparent_alternative_to/). This was a complete lie and they still shadowban people all the time. Any time I see a real person (not a spambot) who has been shadowbanned, I let them know. You can't private message shadowbanned users so I leave it as a comment.

AKA, I have a philosophy on how to improve, and once we learn the building blocks, my students usually do really well with self study. For this reason, I really am only interested in serious players who are willing to put in some work. I probably will recommend the purchase of at least 1-2 chessable books on the side.

Calling someone a prick doesn't make you a psycho. People nowadays likes to use words they don't even know the meaning of. Also, it was relevant to his point because he was replying to a comment saying "Alireza fanboys should calmdown". Which shows that he isn't an alireza fanboy showing that even people that aren't alireza fanboys think that the arbiters messed up.

I'd call that basic moderation, and it immediately enters our queue of comments to manually check to make sure that the comment doesn't break any rules. Follow Rule 1 (Keep it civil and friendly) and your comments won't be added to the list. Shadow-banning is very different - every single post a user makes is deleted, and it is controlled by Reddit Admin, not moderators. If we find users who posts are toxic, we warn, then if warnings are not listened to, increase ban time appropriately until it is clear the user does not want to follow or listen to community rules and we explicitly ban them. You actually can see what triggers the AutoMod by our Public Mod Log, which even gives you the details that you're upset about! Transparency is something we really work to have here on this community, and your anger is at best misguided and at worse just really embarassing. https://rbtc.live/modlogs/?sub=chess (Which is linked in our sidebar). And we can see AutoMod's filter of your post: >January 31, 2021 06:18:20 removecomment:U Cheers!

You can specify your availability during registration (and change it later as well) - so it is possible. With 6 week availability, you can consider also registering as an alternate player (which gives you opportunity to pick up games when we need someone to fill in for a player).

How to make money from chess online/from home?Hey, I'm an intermediate chess player (around 1700 on [chess.com](https://chess.com)). Recently, I was advisd to limit all screen use to 4 hrs a day which means I can only spend about 2-3 hrs on the computer for learning skills to make money. But I figured I can learn chess from books, play online but with a physical board so I don't stare at the screen for the whole game. I have a lot of free time so I can use it for chess. One more thing is I want no social interaction whatsoever (other than maybe email), so I don't want to do phone/video calls. Unfortunately, I also can't play OTB tournaments very often due to my fatigue issues. So, how can I make $500 a month or more off chess despite these limitations? EDIT: I'm talking about making money off chess, not necessarily only playing but something like a blog, youtube channel etc.

I started playing chess a while ago and what I'm missing is some kind of page with metrics about your playstyle, openings, etc. So, I created this and wanted to get some opinions on it. Would you use a website like this? What features would you want? ### EDIT / THANK YOU Thank you so much everyone. It just started out as an idea, so I really can't say for now where this is going. But I'll want this to be free and I'll try to get a minimal prototype working in the next weeks. If you want to follow the progress, send me a message and I'll let you know when there is a website or something that is usable :) **Another edit** I had a bug in the opening detection, so the openings in the picture are actually wrong. That's not actually what Hikaru played. Sorry about that...

Hi Pawngrubber, Just letting you know I’ve spoken with the mods. We agreed this was a serious mistake of a pin and is unjustifiable. Our stance on being unbiased across all sites - chess24, chess.com, lichess, etc. remains firm and in tack and we hope we never need to deal with this again. I apologize for the sticky and am grateful you both replied here and sent a modmail alerting us of this.

Edit: I’m not a fan of this wealth-stunt youtuber; I’ve seen his videos, and I don’t like them. What’s even more annoying is the deluge of people replying telling me I’m wrong for not liking this wealth-stunt youtuber. Please do something else.

What do you think about the idea to calculate chess ratings using AI?I am curious if you think this concept has value, and if you think it would work. The idea is to train a neural network to give an approximate ELO rating for any game. For example, if I play a game and let the AI analyze it, it would tell me that the game was played at a 1530 level. I think this could have value in a few ways. You can find your ELO more quickly than the typical route. By analyzing a few of your recent games, you could get a good sense of where your ELO is. Another benefit, I think, would be that you can watch your level rise (or fall) in real time. If you learn a new strategy, you may see your rating rise immediately. Also, you will be able to see the games that you under-perform, and the games that you over-perform. Finally, you will be able to see the same for your opponent. For example, your opponent may have an ELO lower than yours, but the AI may show that he or she played above his or her level that game.
