Mangus CarlsenI bet the shortest game Mangus Carlsen will play will be the new 2 moves defeat method. I will pay to watch that completion! But imagine if he loses to the 2 move defeat method they will probably kick him out of the world chess competitions and if they kick him out I will be sad because he's my favorite grandmaster.

Incidentally, "under god" was only added during the Cold War in response to Christian zealots worrying about children in Moscow growing up staring at Lenin posters. Huh.

Students aren't actually required to recite it, they have the option of remaining silent. There's been court cases over this.

It wasn't always that way. In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. https://www.ushistory.org/documents/pledge.htm

They get about £300,000,000 a year in tax money but I believe a lot of that dosent go straight into their pockets but used for their various royalings. I fundamentally disagree with their existence but then people just say tourism money so yknow.

That's true, I meant the way I see it commonly interpretated and the debate around it is almost strictly a nationalism one instead of a religion one, but the way I said it left out that our nationalism has inherent Christian fundamentalism that even I uncritically took for granted.

I forget how young reddit skews. You are off at least 50 years on the adding of under God. Reagan? Did you go to a US public school or something? ( I did too, graduated HS during Reagan years)

Oh same, it's one of the more overt yet normalized forms. I read it started during the Cold War Reagan years to "instill democratic values" or some nonsense like that; I think that's when they added "under God" as well (that wasn't in the original). Plenty of people here think it's strange, but nobody feels strongly enough to try to get rid of it because all the conservative pearl clutchers will shout about how the socialists are attacking American values or something.

Nobody really stressed the "Under God" part in schools, it's weird that it's there but the point of the pledge in schools is 0% religion, 100% nationalism.

No, but it's just as weird and brain-washy; they recite the pledge of allegiance which goes "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." This is in violation of the establishment clause of our first amendment but no one cares because Christian zealots in the US have always ignored the constitution when it's convenient to them.

Improve as an adult 2200Hello, I have played chess for a long time. When I was a kid, I was playing a lot of online blitz, I had some mediocre chess coaches and I was reading a lot of books. I reached a level of 2100-2200 when I was 18 and since then I haven't improved anymore. I continue to play some online chess and some OTB but I don't make any progress. I work full time so I can dedicate to chess maybe 5-10 hours per week. I would like to know from people who were in a similar situation of mine how did they improve. I am happy to invest in coaching but I am not sure on how to find a good chess coach that work with adults. I am horrible in openings and strategy and positional play, decent in the rest. I am focusing more on the process rather than the result but I would like to become IM or maybe even GM. Any suggest on how to study and/or what service to buy or coach to use?

Thanks for your question! If you're looking for book recommendations, make sure to read the [/r/chess recommended book list](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/books). There are lots of suggested books for players looking to improve their game, broken down into six categories: basics, tactics, openings, middlegames, endgames, and game collections. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.

Here is the relevant section: **[What is a stalemate, and why is it not a checkmate?](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq#wiki_what_is_a_stalemate.2C_and_why_is_it_not_a_checkmate.3F)** A stalemate happens when your opponent has no legal moves to make on his/her turn, but is also not directly in check. It is **not** considered a checkmate, since the prerequisite for a checkmate is that your opponent must be in check in the first place! In chess, you win when your opponent is in check and has no legal moves to get out of check (checkmate). In stalemate, you've only fulfilled half of that definition. In this case, you do not win -- the game is unconditionally declared a draw! Stalemate is a very important rule that **will not be changed**, no matter how many impassioned letters you write to your local chess federation. It is a pattern that helps define specific endgame drawing techniques, and is critical to learn. To avoid stalemates, try to continually deliver checks until mate, or ensure that your opponent's king has a move until you can set up a mate. There are some lessons on identifying stalemate on [Lichess](https://lichess.org/learn#/16). The official definition of *stalemate*, per the [USCF rulebook](http://www.uschess.org/docs/gov/chessrules/US_Chess_Rule_Book_Chapters_1_2_11_v7.0.pdf): > A game is drawn when the king of the player to move is not in check **and** that player has no legal move. This type of draw is called stalemate. Providing that the opponent’s previous move is legal, this immediately ends the game. I was about to checkmate and win and then suddenly.... STALEMATE... I don't get why, but shouldn't stalemate be a win. It is basically like a surrender for the loosing team.

I recently started playing chess and I went from a 900 to 1100 in just two weeks. All it took was one change; I started defending my pawns and being more cautious about the pawn structure. If you’re a noob like me, I suggest you take better care of your pawns!

RustyHello all. It has been a few years since I played regularly (like nearly 20), but I still remember the game well. I joined on [Chess.com](https://Chess.com) in the last week, and have won 5 out of the 6 games with the 6th being a draw. I may only be a 917 at the moment (due to few games), but back in the day I used to play near a 2000 level. What would be some practice you guys might recommend to help shake off some of this rust? I say rust as I realize I am making mistakes, and luckily getting away with it so far. lol. Thanks in advance!

Learning to play chess undermines the gameUnpopular opinion here from someone who most of the people here would probably beat - because you're all cheating by learning to play chess. I've been playing since I was 4 years old but fairly casually - I never got _into_ it - I first played with my dad as a kid, then with friends (who were interested), then occasionally at a local chess shop or online. I'm ok I guess and can hold my own, but most serious and hobby "players" beat me at least half the time because they learn openings, strategy, study games etc - but they didn't invent those strategies, they're not thinking of them on the spot, or playing through moves and combinations in their head and choosing the best one. They learned protocols, memorized setups, and lost all creativity and originally in the process. I considered studying chess on several occasions but always consciously make the decision to remain ignorant. The whole beauty of the game is the act and challenge of determining the best course of action in a given setup by using your _own_ cognition and tactical intelligence. Call me a purist (though I would not call myself that) but my feeling is that the "ignorant" approach is one of the purest form of computation on human wetware and a truly unsullied exercise in cognitive creativity. I would be hard pressed to deprive myself of being able to play in such an unbias and free-form manner by actually studying the game. That said, I suppose if I wanted to get serious, I can study games themselves and attempt to "invent" my own strategies, which if I'm even marginally competent, I would actually have independently discovered some of the formal strategies studied by serious players. But of course I'll probably never do that since I'm more of a casual player. I choose ignorance! Just wondering if anyone else feels or plays this way? Maybe we can start an "ignorance league" where studying chess amounts to a kind of intellectual doping.

I'm rated around 1200, any recommended courses for me?I've recently learnt about good openings but I still make blunders every now and then. Suggestions for improvements? Like, a consistent pathway to follow not just tips, would be great! Thanks.

It's not like Lichess didn't gave him chances. They forgive him many times but also they suspected that many players are on the same path where they use very cleaver engine assistance. They gave all those youngsters a demo by blocking Raunak.

Punishing bad openings accurately is actually a very advanced skill. An objectively bad opening that doesn't lose material may only be a +1 or +2 advantage to you. It's not easy at all to convert that without ever losing your edge. You need to develop, grab the center and get your King safe. After that you will surely still have an advantage, from then on it's all about positional play and looking for tactics. You should see how Stockfish tears apart a bad opening using the analysis. Play "Human inaccuracies" on one side, and Stockfish moves on the other. It only takes about 10-15 moves for something to crack.

Any words for a long time action video game fan trying to get into chess? As the title says, I really, really want to learn chess. But being able to move only one piece at a time seems pretty limited, and making any kind of strategy seems impossible because my opponent can analyze my move as long as they want and make a counter move with 4 different meanings behind it - of which I only understand half of 1. I've always loved fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken, and FPS games like Team Fortress 2 and CS:GO. I'm also a huge fan of the DOOM series, especially Doom Eternal. That's just a small piece of what I play, but sums up my tastes in action pretty well. Can I even get into chess at all? Or am I just plain incompatible with its long and winding strategies?

Really bad at ChessHi, I'm an FPS / RPG player that randomly decided to learn how to play chess that whos intensely bad at the game. I'm at 202 elo and I wanted to learn it because of (no surprise) the GMs we all love. I just can't seem to get better at the game and I didn't buy any premium membership from any of the chess sites. I watched a couple of videos but didn't seem to help me and I want to get to a level that at least I can see all my opponent's defenses and all his attacks. I have trouble with vision a lot I regret all my moves after doing them and I can't even defeat 1000+ bots. I seem to defeat the 1000 elo bot but that really is random sometimes. Any quick tips for me to just stop inting pieces and start pressuring my opponents more? Great love from Turkey!

I feel like I’ve only gotten worseThat’s a misleading title because I know that since I started tracking my rating I’ve gotten *quantifiably* worse. It just feels like no matter how much I learn about the game, which tactics or strategies I use, I always end up losing. This isn’t the first new skill I’ve learned. I know that sometimes there’s a period where your skills dip before the all the knowledge you’ve acquired really sets in but it’s been months for me and I feel like I’m a worse player than I was before. Is this normal? Is it like Go where you have to “lose your first thousand matches” or is it just me?

I feel im getting worse at chessI started playing chess about 6 years ago, when my flatmate taught it to me and fell In love with the game ever since, I played a lot after that with my friends ever since, when covid started I decided to to take it a bit more seriously and study openings and actual strategy, ever since then, I feel that im just going with the motions of opening and blundering more than I used to. I don't know if it is that im noticing more of the blunders and mistakes that I do, but I feel playing more mechanically than I used to

Your post was removed because it is a very common question or post that is addressed in the /r/chess **[FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq)** and/or **[Online Resources](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/resources)** pages.

Games ending in a drawFar too many games I feel is I decisively win by removing all their pieces, yet if I cannot checkmate the king, it ends in a draw. This is incredibly frustrating and a huge deterrence from me playing chess. Is this a normal occurence? Recommendations?

Did chess.com servers crash?Just had a 15+10 game abort on the 43rd move, after nearly a half hour playing. My opponent had 14 seconds left and had just made a move. I went to respond and the game aborted. Now there is no record of it. Anyone else experience this tonight? This seems highly unusual, and I’m more than a little miffed at how much time and effort I wasted.

Chess.com vs LiChess puzzle ratingI’m very new to chess, and I started on LiChess and got a puzzle rating of 1600 and was really surprised, but I recently switched to Chess.com and can’t get my rating above 1100 in puzzles. Did I suddenly get worse or is there a huge disparity in the difficulty of the puzzles on each site?

Currently rated 420 and looking for a strict training plan to improve! So I'm open to books, websites or any old thing to get better. Just need a good plan that I can sink 1-2 hours a day in too. I've been playing for 2 weeks or so and have seen improvement, but I wanted to know what the general consensus is on effective training plans? Some additional information... - I use chess.com and own the top tier membership - I play rapid 15/10 - I have played 34 games (15 Won, 16 loss, 3 draw) I just want to sink time into chess, as I'm really enjoying it. But I also don't want to spend months learning the wrong things. So please, give me some tips, training plans or just anything you think is important for me to get better!

Your post was removed because it is a very common question or post that is addressed in the /r/chess **[FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/faq)** and/or **[Online Resources](https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/wiki/resources)** pages. Here is the relevant section: *** In any given position, the engine evaluation of a move is based on a continuation, which is displayed alongside the move. To figure out why your move is classified the way it is, play through the provided line and see where it leads! You may find that your move was inaccurate because you missed a killer tactic, or that your blunder allowed your opponent to trap you in a mating net. Conversely, your move may have been good because it created an imbalance (attacking an under-defended piece) or improved your position. Remember, what your opponent actually did end up playing in the game is inconsequential - a chess engine will always assume perfect play from both sides. Part of getting better at chess is analyzing your own moves, and figuring out for yourself why they were good or bad. Don't lean on engine evaluations or /r/chess users as a crutch! Keep in mind that inaccuracies are only significant when they cause a significant jump in the engine evaluation. An inaccuracy that lowers the evaluation from 3,9 to 3,2 is meaningless - you had a winning advantage before the move, and you still have one after. You don't need to hold yourself to a computer's ideal of perfection. If you have more questions about a particular move, or inaccuracies/blunders in general, you are more than welcome to make text posts about them. However, screenshots of such moves with no analysis, or posts that just ask why a particular move is a good or bad move with no attempt made to suss out the reason, will continue to be removed.

The *en passant* rule allows for a special pawn capture, where a pawn that moves two spots from its starting square [can be captured by a directly adjacent enemy pawn as if it had moved forward only one square](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Ajedrez_animaci%C3%B3n_en_passant.gif). [Wikipedia has a great entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant) explaining the nature and purpose of the rule. The official definition of *en passant*, per the [USCF rulebook](http://www.uschess.org/docs/gov/chessrules/US_Chess_Rule_Book_Chapters_1_2_11_v7.0.pdf): > A pawn, attacking a square bypassed by an opponent’s pawn, the latter having advanced two squares in one move from its original square, may capture the opponent’s pawn as though the latter had moved only one square. This capture may only be made in immediate reply to such advance and is called an *en passant* (in passing) capture. Note that only a pawn that has advanced a total of exactly three squares from its original square is in position to make such a capture. Why am I so fucking stupid?I am completely convinced I am stupid and that's why I can't play this game. I literally look at the fucking pieces one at a time, move it so I can do something, only to be completely oblivious to the fact that in doing that, I am exposing my king and boom check mate in six fucking moves every single time. My girlfriend's favorite game is chess and I'm playing it for her sake but this is not fun at all. Assrape after assrape after assrape. The game always ends with me having 2 fucking pawns and the king with her queen, rook, and bishop circling my king like a fucking game of peekaboo. Not to mention that if I'm moving the king I get frustrated that I can't move him and capture the piece next to it, because the computer doesn't let me. And it takes five fucking minutes of starting at the board before I realize "oh that would put me in check" like what the fuck. So, r/chess, how the fuck do I increase my brain's IQ? Because the fact that I could be born this fucking retarded just makes me want to lock myself in my room and die of dehydration. Can't put up a fight against my fucking girlfriend in her favorite game. Wins every time. I hate this shit and if I get checkmated in the most fucking retarded way one more time I'm smashing this piece of shit PC. If someone comments "git gud" I will completely unironically and legitimately commit suicide.

650 rating in 2 weeks I've picked up chess as a hobby 2 weeks ago (I played a bit as a kid but nothing big) I started around 700 rating rapid and I'm already 1300 on chess.com. Is this normal to see this much growth so quickly or am I just adapting to the game really quickly?

Is anyone else experiencing problems with their chess.com app?My chess app suddenly has been giving me problems for the last day and it won’t load my friends profile pictures anymore or mine and also the theme I play with won’t load onto the app anymore. I even checked on my desktop as well and it seems like the same issues are happening, I tried deleting the app rebooting my phone and signing in and out of my account. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Book recommendations for 1300 rated players?Does anyone have some good book recommendations for beginners who want to learn a little theory? I’ve never analyzed openings but the more I’ve been playing recently the more I want to find a good book on openings. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Chess warChess is on its peak of popularity. All the biggest teich streamers are playing chess. But the online chess board are boring and not interesting. Efective but boring as hell.I am concept Artist my job is to create interesting and new ideas but i can not realized this one alone. The chess baord and pieces looking like medieval war city. But thats not the interesting part. The thing i havents seen anyone to do it to make it interactive. For example if you castle pieces transform and make castle on board or if you play the london opening some pices change to resemble medievel london dominats maybe a river themes will form. if we make post it on reddit of content creators they will see and will want it. We will monitazed it they will have to buy it for some money. And if its all goes well you will be paid. Whos got some coding skills 3d modeling skills or concept art skill and want to join Comment" Im in" and will contact you

I don't understand why this is a blunder. Can somebody help?Hello, i was playing a game on [chess.com](https://chess.com) when this happened. ![img](3p0k4w3wvuk61) The opponent moved horse from c3 to b5. I thought the point of this move was to have the horse go c7 which would check the king and collect the rook on a8. So i moved the queen from g5 to d8 to guard the weak c7 square. The machine said that this was a blunder although i was still winning in this position. Could somebody explain why? Thanks

I know they say not to comment if you would like to be a student but I just thought I’d put this out there anyway... I am a 17 year old in a grade 12 chess course at my school. I am the second best in the class because some of the students don’t take it as seriously but the boy who is in first is a lot better than me. We have tournaments at my school and no female has ever won top player of the school hence why they made top female player award but I would love to be able to be the first top player either this year or next. I still have a lot of practicing and learning today but I am super committed to reading and practicing. So if anyone can help me out that would be amazing. My chess.com is IllegalChance and my chess rating is abt a 1000 so anything higher than that is great! Thank you! ♥️ Eliza

I just became a FMI am aware that this sub isn't for posting achievements and other similar stuff, but I can't resist sharing it and if mods decide to remove the post I completely understand. This week a closed OTB standard tournament was organized in my town. There were 10 players invited including me (1 GM, 2 IMs, 5 FMs and 2 untitled players). I started the tournament with 2208 ELO and finished with 2304, thus completing the requirement for the title. I am extremely happy that my work has paid off, and that my town got it's first chess master. Here are the links of the tournament and games: https://chess-results.com/tnr548592.aspx?lan=1 https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021-it-konjic-open Edit: I have decided to not answer to this thread anymore due to recieving blatant insults and threats. If you felt acomplishment in wishing death to a minor, well done to you. I am saddened by the situation and have decided to leave this sub. Hope you have a nice day, and if you feel any regret I won't hold it against any of you. Just need a break

Where is the black king???I was playing blitz chess last night and each game I played, as black or as white, the black king simply wouldn't show up. I chalked it up as a weird glitch and went to bed. It wasn't a big deal since I knew where the king was anyways. Today I was doing puzzles and still the king wasn't showing up. This made the puzzles pretty much impossible so I reported the issue. Has anyone experienced this? Did I change some weird setting by accident? ![img](9vuvsbabbtk61)

How did black castle in move 12?Hi everyone, I just had a bit of a wtf moment. I was playing a game and I thought it was obvious that in chess you can't castle if the pieces have to cross squares attacked by an enemy piece. Am I going crazy or did my opponent just did that in move 12 of this game? [https://lichess.org/anBSnf58meZF](https://lichess.org/anBSnf58meZF) I started playing a few months ago so I am not sure if I am missing something. Thanks for any help!

Event: IM (not a GM) Speed Chess Championship[Tournament Details](https://www.chess.com/article/view/2021-im-not-a-gm-speed-chess-championship) Follow the games here: [Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/events/2021-imscc) *** IM Not A GM is back with a sequel, and it will feature some of the most famous non-GM players in the chess community. The event will run January 3-March 1, 2021, and will again provide highly entertaining and easily accessible chess content. The stakes will be higher in this year's edition of the tournament because the prize pool has been raised to $10,000. The competition will feature chess personalities such as IMs Levy Rozman (/u/GothamChess) and Eric Rosen. In addition, Chess.com's Chief Chess Officer and lead commentator IM Danny Rensch (/u/danielrensch) will be making his second-ever appearance as a competitor in an official Chess.com championship. *** **[Format](https://images.chesscomfiles.com/uploads/v1/images_users/tiny_mce/PromoteToBishop/phpjvvTcH.png)** The format is similar to that of the Speed Chess Championship, except for the addition of a halftime break and slightly less time allotted for each segment. The participants will play 75 minutes of 5+1 blitz, 45 minutes of 3+1 blitz, and 25 minutes of 1+1 bullet chess in each match, with breaks scheduled for the players halfway through both the five-minute and three-minute portions. *** ####**[Championship Bracket](https://images.chesscomfiles.com/uploads/v1/images_users/tiny_mce/hscer/phpPgWwX6.png)** Seeding is determined by a blend of Chess.com blitz and bullet ratings. As a beginner a have a few questions which have been on my mind for a while, Thanks in advance for the replies.Question 1: Imagine a board with 2 same colored (let's say white) rooks; one on a1, other on h1 (with no other pieces in between them). Suppose, white moves the rook on a1 to d1. How does the notation work for this move? You can't just note it as Rd1 because there are two different Rd1 moves possible. Is it something like Ra1-d1? Question 2: Can a player castle while in check? (Assuming he/she never moved the king nor the rooks before.) Question 3: Can a player castle if he/she has been checked before? (Assuming he/she meets all the other requirements to castle.)

Chess website optionsFor firewall reasons, I can no longer play on lichess or [chess.com](https://chess.com) on one of my devices. Are there any other popular places to play online that don't use these domains or may be hidden from firewalls searching for chess-specific sites?
