> Evidence-based communication has been pushed to the fringe since this sub grew past 100k members. Alternatives like r/CollapseScience are below 5k members. How are moderators working to address this? I've tried to address the notion of how things 'used to be better' [in this way in the past.](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/rmz09h/this_sub_used_to_be_better/hppw8km/?context=999) I think the solutions there are still relevant and the best options going forward. The concept of an Eternal September, individually perceived or collectively, is also ongoing and has come to pass at multiple levels. My expectations have generally been the subreddit will continue to grow at a significant rate and be largely composed of users at lower levels of collapse awareness. Elevating high quality and data-driven content is certainly one lever we aim to pull to try and help educate the community, thus raising the bar overall, but there are many ways to do that which we could discuss individually. I do not consider moderators a curators of content, only filters. I wrote [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/xs7i43/why_moderators_dont_curate_sighting_posts/) to address a similar notion in regards to sighting posts (i.e. data) on r/UFOs. My approach and suggestions here would likely be similar, but let me know if that makes sense in terms of explaining how I think about our role as moderators and the situation regarding content. > from what I've seen you focalized community in developing r/collapse Could you elaborate on this a bit? The subreddit is a community, but a nebulous one and Reddit is really only able to catalyze a specific form and level of discourse online. I have far deeper and denser experiences of the collapse community elsewhere, such as on Discord or through the moderation team itself, and generally perceive significant limits in terms of what forms of community Reddit can foster or embody.

Megathread: East Palestine, Ohio Train DerailmentOn February 3, 2023 around 9PM, a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals, including vinyl chloride, derailed and exploded in the town of East Palestine, Ohio. East Palestine is a town of 4,800 residents near the Ohio–Pennsylvania border. The derailment caused a fire which lasted for several days. On February 6, to prevent further explosions, emergency crews managed the fire into a controlled burn which allowed for a monitored, gradual release of the burning toxic chemicals. The burn led to a mandatory evacuation of residents within a one mile. No immediate deaths or injuries were reported. The train consisted of 141 loaded cars, nine empty cars, and three locomotives. Around 50 cars were derailed. Twenty of the 141 cars were classified as carrying hazardous materials, 14 of which were carrying vinyl chloride. Other chemicals included butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, isobutylene, combustible liquids, and benzene residue. The National Transportation Safety Board said it had preliminary findings that a mechanical problem on an axle of one of the cars led to the derailment. [East Palestine train derailment: What we know about the situation - Cincinnati Enquirer - 2/13/2023](https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2023/02/13/east-palestine-ohio-train-derailment-facts/69898564007/) [What We Know About the Train Derailment in Ohio - The New York Times - 2/13/2023](https://www.nytimes.com/article/ohio-train-derailment.html) [Ohio catastrophe is ‘wake-up call’ to dangers of deadly train derailments - The Guardian - 2/11/2023](https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/11/ohio-train-derailment-wake-up-call) [2023 Ohio train derailment - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Ohio_train_derailment) [East Palestine Train Derailment - EPA](https://response.epa.gov/site/site_profile.aspx?site_id=15933) [Popular video showing some of the burning and environmental damage](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/10zvh0a/here_is_some_video_of_that_train_derailment_we/) ## Related Event: Arrest of Reporter Evan Lambert On February 8, Evan Lambert, a reporter for NewsNation, was approached by two state troopers of the Ohio Highway Patrol and Major General John C. Harris Jr. of the Ohio Adjutant General's Department for being "loud" during his report while reporting live in a gymnasium behind the press conference of DeWine. A confrontation ensued between Major General Harris and Lambert. State troopers and other nearby authorities then intervened in an attempt to break the two up, all of which was caught on nearby cell phone and body camera footage. Harris later stated to officers that Lambert had approached him in an 'aggressive manner' and that "I instinctively put my hands on his chest to keep him from bumping into me, which I felt was inevitable if I had not protected myself". Lambert was eventually moved out of the gym, forced to the ground, and arrested. He was charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct and released later in the day. Governor DeWine decried the event by lambasting the actions of authorities stating that Lambert "\[h\]ad the right to be reporting" and condemned any obstruction from authorities upon the press by asserting "That certainly is wrong and it's not anything that I approve of. In fact, I vehemently disapprove of it." [2023 Ohio train derailment - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Ohio_train_derailment) *This story is still developing and we will try to update this post as new information arises. If there is anything we should add, let us know or share it in the comments below. Posts and discussions better suited to this megathread will be redirected here.*

Harris Jr. of the Ohio Adjutant General's Department for being "loud" during his report while reporting live in a gymnasium behind the press conference of DeWine. In fact, I vehemently disapprove of it." Because of technical limitations this is a lengthy process, but we're hoping to have it done by the April update. # Content Suggestion We have had multiple people come to us over the past year with concerns regarding the quality of information on Medium in general and the writings of Umair Haque in particular; these concerns centre on the content being mediocre quality on a good day, information often being dubious, and (in Haque's case) being pretty much clickbait for the community. As these concerns are now at a critical mass, we are seeking input from the community; 1. Do you think we should, as a general rule, ban Medium links from being submitted to r/Collapse (noting that some may still be approved if the submitters get prior approval from moderation)? 2. Do you think we should ban Umair Haque's stuff specifically? 3. Do you think we should do both? We welcome any feedback or questions you have regarding these changes and updates. Additionally, what are your thoughts on the state of the subreddit overall?

Yes, and I tried emailing the contact listed in the WHOIS, but all my emails get rejected as spam by the registrar. Also, it's not guaranteed it will reach an actual person, based on how some registrars works. I did reach out to Gandi's support, in case they can help get the email through, but have to wait to see what they'll say. Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes, that would be a potential backup plan. Collapse.wiki is my first choice though, which is why we're pursuing it. Letstalkthis.com has a SSL cert. Is it not forcing https on your end?

The current one is hosted at letstalkthis.com and that domain is not very descriptive of what's actually there. We also have letstalkcollspse.com forwarding to it, but nothing is currently hosted on that domain. When I first proposed the wiki I was not a moderator, so it made more sense to use a URL associated with my username. The general domain (i.e. letstalkthis.com) name also meant I could host the wikis for both r/collapse and r/ufos on the same server. That's no longer necessary, as we've moved the r/ufos wiki to [ufos.wiki](https://ufos.wiki). I also think something with 'wiki' in the URL helps emphasize it is indeed a wiki, even if only very few people have contributed to it historically. Lastly, Collapse.Wiki is not actually being used and was obviously intended to be a collapse-related wiki at some point. Moving the contents of the wiki or server around is trivial, so that's not a functional barrier on our end.

Subreddit Updates: Feburary 2023[Collection of all r/collapse subreddit updates](https://new.reddit.com/r/collapse/collection/3f31355a-9aab-4c16-9a6b-9e58d308f2a1) Please see below for subreddit changes since the last update, and use this post for open feedback on the sub. # Changes: 1. Upcoming AMAs: 1. Date TBD, Feb: [Terry Macalister](https://www.theguardian.com/profile/terrymacalister) and team from recent movie [The Oil Machine](https://www.theoilmachine.org/) 2. New common questions: 1. [What are your plans for the far future (retirement)?](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/106gbvr/what_are_your_plans_for_the_far_future_retirement/) 2. [What job/life/general purpose skills do you think will be necessary during collapse?](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/10bm6hl/what_joblifegeneral_purpose_skills_do_you_think/) 3. [What are the best debates related to collapse?](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/10h1ejh/what_are_the_best_debates_related_to_collapse/) 3. There's an update of the sidebar content and Collapse wiki in the works. Because of technical limitations this is a lengthy process, but we're hoping to have it done by the April update.

No, we haven't found a purely AI-driven account. It generally means a user is using ChatGPT to generate content and then is manually posting it here.

Poll: How long does civilization have? How far do you think we are from a point where the process of collapse (climate and ecological, political and societal) has progressed to the point where effectively you personally would describe the situation as one where human organization on the level of civilization (a largely sedentary society dependent on agricultural surplus with state formation, constituted by secular and/or religious power structures, that endure for centuries, with specialization of labor, writing, and urbanization) has effectively ceased to exist on a global scale? I personally believe best case scenario is mid to late 2030s.

Subreddit Updates: January 2023Hey everyone, we've decided to start a new series of monthly posts where we provide general updates regarding any subreddit changes and invite general feedback in terms of the state of the subreddit and moderation here. We plan to sticky these posts on the first of each month for a couple days each time. If this turns out to be too often or too much work on our end we'll consider shifting them to quarterly posts. Let us know your thoughts on this idea in general as well as the changes and format below. ## Changes: 1. [u/phd\_in\_awesome](https://www.reddit.com/u/phd_in_awesome) has been added as our newest Full Moderator. 2. [u/blackcatwizard](https://www.reddit.com/u/blackcatwizard), [u/SadRavenSmiling](https://www.reddit.com/u/SadRavenSmiling), [u/TopSloth](https://www.reddit.com/u/TopSloth), and [u/Vorat](https://www.reddit.com/u/Vorat) have been added as our newest Comment Moderators. 3. A link to the [Unofficial Collapse Discord](https://discord.gg/collapse-415671701549088790) has been added into the subreddit sidebar. 4. We've made a few other updates to the sidebar items (thanks goes to u/Vespertine for [their suggestions](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/ziozd5/revise_sidebar_resource_list/)): 1. Removed Club Orlov 2. Removed Doomstead Diner 3. Added [Power Hungry Podcast](https://robertbryce.com/power-hungry-podcast/) 4. Added [Post Doom](https://postdoom.com/) to Resources 5. Added [An Inconvenient Apocalypse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouKfivBCbsY&ab_channel=FacingFuture) \- Wes Jackson, Robert jenson (2022) 6. Added [Greenland ice melt - why climate communication is conservative](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpEUkrzDW6c&ab_channel=JasonBox) \- Jason Box (2022) # Proposal: Add a sub-rule to Rule 4 (Keep information quality high): >AI Generated posts and comments must be prefaced by stating their source. We've removed a handful of AI-generated submissions already in the past few weeks and only expect instances to rise. Let us know your thoughts about the inclusion of this sub-rule to require users to label their content as being AI-generated in order to post it. We would define AI-generated content as anything significantly measured as 'fake' by the [GPT-2 Output Detector](https://huggingface.co/openai-detector/). We're open to suggestions for better methods or metrics for more easily identifying AI-generated content. We welcome any feedback or questions you have regarding these changes and updates. Additionally, what are your thoughts on the state of the subreddit overall? Let us know what's on your mind in the comments.
