I can't find any energy to fight the entropy. I just wish my molecules would disassociate and return to base carbon and waters. Everything is showing the cracks and breaks in reality, but everybody still has to go do life things, and be part of the grand parade.
Every day kills all of us that much more, as we walk like zombies to a future with worse finances, worse food, worse shelter, worse social circles, worse violence, worse everything.
I just want to sleep while the arrogant buffoons keep trying to talk their way out of the crisis that keeps getting worse.
My brain, heart, spirit, and body are beyond exhausted.
At least one of these pics appear to be in the Netherlands. A lot of misinformation has been spread in favor of the farmers lately, how the government is suppressing them etc... The truth is the entire landscape has been ruined, farms and fields are everywhere you look. The manure destroys entire ecosystems. Its already too late to act.

Well, one and a half orders of magnitude greater anyway. :-)

This post displays five images of areas that have been converted from forest lands to agricultural lands. The post questions why animal populations are declining globally and indicates that human overpopulation and agriculture are among the major factors. The post is relevant to collapse because it demonstrates how humans are eliminating natural habitats and biodiversity for their own food and resources. The post also warns that this trend is unsustainable and will cause ecological collapse sooner or later.

Yes gender roles are social constructs. If you read all my comments you’ll see I, and others, said that.
I disagree that for the first time in history people aren’t being aren’t being murdered as frequently. There are several phases in history where it was far more accepted than it is now. Before Christian Puritanism for example. Greeks? Romans? Lots of cultures had ‘third genders’. If you think things are ok now you’re not looking. The gender criticals are loud over here, and supported by the far right (did you see ‘Posie Parker’ in Melbourne?). It’s scary. In the UK just a couple of weeks ago we had a transgender girl murdered by her 15 and 16 year old classmates, and a drag queen murdered in Cardiff.
No one is suggesting this is new, but if you are around young people or a parent of a young person you will see that it’s far more common now than it has been for a long time. Also if you read the science, if you look at the biology of the role of endocrine disrupters in development, specifically regarding oestrogen and androgen, it’s very hard not to think that something is happening.
If you accept that someone with non conforming gender identity or sexuality is ‘born that way’ and has not just decided to choose it, which I believe is what gay people have been arguing for decades, then that is to accept that they likely have a genetic or epigenetic difference driving a change in their biology. It’s well known that there is also a neurological aspect to gender identity, even transgenderism, with certain regions of the brain enlarged in people who feel more masculine or feminine, not necessarily correlated with their ‘biological’ sex. And yes I am aware that gender identity and sexuality are not the same but they are inextricably linked.
If that is so, and genetics or epigenetics can drive differential sex hormone expression or reception, affect the amount of hormone precursors available during development, and affect neurological physiology associated with gender identity, is it such a stretch to think that outside influences of known hormone disruptors in utero or early childhood might not be having some effect? Especially in our case, where it was in such high concentrations in our drinking water that the government tried for years to cover it up. PFAS and that family of forever chemicals are relative newcomers to the scene…bisphenol A has been doing similar for years.
Keep in mind that hormones are a massively complex area of biology…when you study it it’s actually quite mind blowing how intricate these pathways are and the far reaching implications when one tiny bit goes wrong. I remember studying the biochemistry of foetal development and wondering how on earth it ever went right at all. I’d say that if all that resulted from these chemicals being everywhere were some kids who questioned their gender identity etc we’d be doing ok, but of course that’s not the only thing. Cancer, infertility, neurological development issues, growth issues, metabolic disorders and hormone disorders…they’re all in there.
Before you accuse me of being regressive, and given that I’m parenting two kids identifying as atypical gender, one who has been hounded and bullied at school and struggled to the point of suicidal thoughts, maybe do some research. (The first two are easy to read ‘pop-science’ articles, the rest are research articles or policy documents. This is just a selection….google it if you want more. There’s a lot out there, just pay attention to the source as not all are equal.)

Bird flu has been spreading worldwide, with increasing numbers of infected birds and mammals. This could be exacerbated in the coming months when migratory season begins, potentially disrupting food chains, and bringing more exposure of the virus to humans.
The worst case scenario would be that the virus adapts to better spread between humans, sparking a new epidemic/pandemic. Governments are looking into vaccinating poultry to dampen economic damage caused by mass culling.

‘That’s how capitalism works,’ Biden says of SVB, Signature Bank investors who lost money in failed banks. If that is how it's supposed to "work", then imagine the impacts of the impending failure looming behind the horizon...
Megathread: American banking collapsePlease use this thread for all recent banking issues, including beyond America (such as Credit Suisse). This megathread covers the recent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and the fallout
Resident u/LastWeekInCollapse's summary from [this week's post](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/11pcnzj/last_week_in_collapse_march_511_2023/):
>The ongoing Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (the 16th largest bank in the U.S., with $212B in assets) is alarming investors and start-ups. It is the second-largest financial institution to Collapse in American history—and Elon Musk has now expressed interest in buying it. 97% of SVB bank accounts have/had more than $250,000 in them, and the FDIC, which has received the bank, only insures individual accounts up to $250,000. So a lot of investors are going to lose a lot of money; this economic bomb may also destroy a number of established and growing tech companies. But don’t worry, the bankers got paid bonuses hours before the FDIC took over.

Week of March 13: Notably, Credit Suisse, and others:
>The Bank of England was holding emergency talks with international counterparts last night amid rising alarm at a potential financial disaster at [one of Europe’s biggest banks](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2023/03/14/credit-suisse-warns-material-weakness-financial-controls/).
>
> Shares in the Swiss lender plunged more than 30% at one point on Wednesday
>
>funding cap comments spooked investors, who feared it could limit emergency cash from investors in the Middle East.
>
>That compounded panic about potential weaknesses across a global banking sector still reeling from SVB’s collapse

Friday, March 10: Silicon Valley Bank:
>A bank run dealt a lethal blow to Silicon Valley Bank Friday, forcing its failure after the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates

>Regulators rushed Friday to seize the assets of one of Silicon Valley’s top banks, marking the largest failure of a U.S. financial institution since the height of the financial crisis almost 15 years ago.
>
>Silicon Valley Bank, the nation’s 16th-largest bank, failed after depositors hurried to withdraw money this week amid anxiety over the bank’s health. It was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history after the collapse of [Washington Mutual](https://apnews.com/article/08aeb5a6c9d542ccb6d6154d4fa1e3a6) in 2008.
>
>As part of the seizure, California bank regulators and the FDIC transferred the bank’s assets to a newly created institution — the Deposit Insurance Bank of Santa Clara. The new bank will start paying out insured deposits on Monday. Then the FDIC and California regulators plan to sell off the rest of the assets to make other depositors whole.
>
>There was unease in the banking sector all week, with shares tumbling by double digits. Then news of Silicon Valley Bank’s distress pushed shares of almost all financial institutions even lower Friday.
>
>The failure arrived with incredible speed. Some industry analysts suggested Friday that the bank was still a good company and a wise investment. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Bank executives were trying to raise capital and find additional investors. However, trading in the bank’s shares was halted before stock market’s opening bell due to extreme volatility.

SS: As per title, scientists have revived a virus from 48,500 years ago frozen in permafrost. The amoeba-infecting viruses are still infectious, per experts. Experts also say that people regard ancient virus research as a scientific curiosity and don’t perceive the prospect of ancient viruses coming back to life as a serious public health threat. However, as we know, lax safety standards and unexpected leaks do happen in which case humanity would be faced with another global pandemic emergency. Only this time the public will for mitigation measures will be almost non-present, allowing a potentially new pathogen to roam freely and slay millions on earth, further accelerating the collapse of the most fragile societies.

SS: For the last two years, lake mead has dropped its level and is approaching deadpool levels(means when the water level is so low that the dam cant generate electricity). 86% of this water goes toward agriculture. Curious what this level will be in 4 months.
EDIT:This is related to collapse because it shows that available water in the southwest is smaller than it was before. Less water means collapse.

Submission statement: Central Ohio has an active tornado warning in addition to a severe thunderstorm warning. I've lived in central Ohio my entire life, and don't remember ever having a tornado warning or a thunderstorm of this caliber in what is supposed to be the dead of winter. A thunderstorm isn't entirely surprising though, because of all of the 60 and 70 degree days we've been having recently, which is also extremely uncharacteristic of Ohio in February. I'm sorry that this submission is purely anecdotal, but it's getting harder and harder to ignore that the weather is not like it used to be.
Tornado sirens are going off all across the city. We're getting massive amounts of rain and gusts of wind. Just a few days ago it was below freezing. I'm not so sure I can come up with a 150 word submission statement on this, so it may end up getting deleted.

Submission statement:
James Hansen and colleagues have released another stiffening study, this time about the rate of climate change and why it’s accelerating. The paper is titled “Global warming in the pipeline” and it's a good read. I recommend looking at it if you’re the least bit scientifically inclined.
But to boil it down: The concept of global warming “in the pipeline,” as Hansen explains, is a result of the “climate’s delayed response and the need for anticipatory action to alter the course of fossil fuel development.” What he means is, when you pull the meat out of the oven, it’s not done cooking.
Quoting Hansen: "At this moment, humanity is taking its first steps into the period of consequences. Earth’s paleoclimate history helps us assess potential outcomes."

Submission statement: This article talks about how there are now so many airbnbs on the market in Phoenix, that they couldn't even get high occupancy rates when the Super Bowl was in town.
Why this is collapse related: I think this could be the catalyst to start off the housing market bust. If these airbnbs are sitting on the market without making money, the owners are going to have no choice but to sell. And if they are losing money every month, they aren't going to be the kind of sellers who let it sit on the market for a year to get "what it's worth". They are going to have to go meet buyers at lower prices.

It’s a shame that the elderly are being denied help. And it’s largely because of the lazy, useless parasites who spit out countless government cheese babies because Uncle Sam incentivized it for so long. Generations of ignorant people who scam and rob and breed career criminals have drained the taxpayers and destroyed a system meant to help productive citizens who needed a temporary support system. And when this system goes away they’ll simply rob and steal more, anything it takes to forgo becoming a productive member of society.
Two things in this. First, you have zero idea who our customers are. They are price conscious and that is what I stated. They can afford what we sell and then some. I described what I see from inside my workplace. And what we sell is far far from a necessity. This function of price sensitivity can and will play when it comes to moving manufacturing back to the US.
Second, you might want to stop and think about what you say is a class thing. There are an enormous number of non-necessities that poor people still purchase or if they cannot purchase, complain they cannot afford. They still want the thing (a facsimile of what the richer people have) or they purchase that cheap chinese version. This eats into the actual market for a US company. This means a too small market to make reshoring of many parts of manufacturing viable.
(Note: I am not saying this is good or right. Having class consciousness is NOT going to solve our issues. It just makes you more aware of HOW the issues are tied together and HOW we might cushion our descent.)
Also, playing into this is peak oil. Cheap energy makes for cheap products. There are whole industries that are in india and china because they have cheap coal to burn. You either need massive marketshare or really cheap energy. Small businesses are not going to make it.
My personal answer is that you should not buy the thing. But, hey, I practice going without because that is where we are headed and that is what my budget can afford. And I work a good manufacturing job. Albeit one that will likely end sooner rather than later.
If you look at earth's history of different ages, they typically go from periods of enlightenment, progression, stability; to very dark periods where people are oppressed in masses, wars galore, death, killing, suppression of science and the embracing of conspiracies.
2012 we exited one age and entered the age of Aquarius. Sure is looking like we are on the downswing back to the next dark ages. Everything is cyclical.
Once chaos ensues, i definitely plan on drug induced suicide, likely by a massive dose of psilocybin mushrooms, and if i have them, some other drugs. Hopefully i don't wake up like Frank from Shameless. If i do i will run.
I have a battle ready sword (😆), but honestly, a gun likely won't help me much. I was in the AF and nearly flunked my rifle test. Had to get remedial training and i still sucked. Even shooting a shot gun...i suck. So, i'm just being real and honest. Im far more likely to shoot myself or my wife (who also wants to peace out when shit goes down and is much more serious about it than i am). A real man doesn't pretend he's Rambo when he's not. I got no kids, and i have no desire to kill anyone. Sure, i got anger issues, but i aspire to be a decent Buddhist these days and i choose to go out on my own terms rather than kill another person. There is more to life than survival. Dignity in death matters.
Please don't report me to the suicide prevention line. It is soooo annoying that people and mods do that and is insulting, just because i desire to peace out on my own terms when shit goes down.

SS: This is collapse related, because the country poisoned its citizens and [downplayed the danger](https://youtu.be/xCyM1ggvPUA?t=55).
I saw this post the other day: "[I’m scared a lot of people in Ohio are likely to die.](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/10yfcg1/im_not_sure_where_else_to_post_this_but_im_scared/)" and wondered how the government will react. Today I stumbled about this video in r/all. So I thought it did get wide coverage, to my surprise I only saw a few videos on YouTube. And the official people in the videos downplayed its danger. While the comments were all about its actual danger.
About vinyl chloride:
High doses of vinyl chloride can cause severe health effects, including unconsciousness, suffocation, and death. Inhaling large amounts of vinyl chloride can lead to respiratory distress and can cause respiratory failure, which can be life-threatening. Short-term exposure to high levels of vinyl chloride can also cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. Additionally, high doses of vinyl chloride can damage the liver and other organs and increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

SS: Mongolia's addiction to coal has caused air pollution to devastate its population. The country's air pollution crisis has dramatically shortened the lives of the Mongolian people. Children are either dying or have some sort of respiratory related disease. When the future generations are handicapped or wiped out, collapse is inevitable as there are no availability of healthy citizens to continue the functions of society.

I don't see the connection. The West in general and the US specifically have been racists and discriminatory throughout their history. Pogroms in Europe during the middle-ages and genocides in the US.
Othering just something humans do. Not sure how this relates to collapse...

What are these unifying policies you speak of? Seems to me its the Dems that are creating the divisive atmosphere.

They do this every couple years for two decades

Submission Statement:
Atmospheric methane levels have risen 7% since 2006, with the biggest increases in the past two years despite the slowdown in oil and gas production. Researchers have traced the increase to microbes in tropical wetlands, and climate change might be driving the trend by causing more rain in these regions. The traditional approach of focusing on sources may not be enough to understand the methane spike. The primary sink for methane, the hydroxyl radical, is now being depleted by other chemicals like carbon monoxide, which is 40 times as reactive and reduces the half-life of methane. The more CO there is in the atmosphere, the longer the half-life of methane. global warming is driving wildfires, which in turn release carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. This carbon monoxide cannibalizes hydroxyl radicals that would normally oxidize methane. The result is a longer atmospheric half-life for methane, leading to a spike in global methane levels and increased heating of the planet. The decrease in aviation and travel during the COVID lockdowns and use of hydrogen gas as a replacement energy source also contributed to the depletion of hydroxyl, leading to a longer half-life for methane in the atmosphere. Regulations for transoceanic shipping fuels have also led to a reduction in sulfur dioxide and other sulfur compounds, potentially reducing hydroxyl production. So if we stop burning fossil fuels, or burn cleaner fuels, we make methane half-life longer. Catch-22.

The link you showed with Hydro Quebec literally shows ongoing outages. Wtf are you on about here lol stop trying to stir shit up for no reason.
.....isn't this literally the plot of that stupid ''White Noise'' movie on Netflix? (also, Adam Driver is the worst actor alive...yes, even worse then le Bouff...)
On the bright side: this event, \[which I only just now heard about via this thread\] is being handled 110% exactly as rationally and well s I would expect of the plethora of yankee doodle authorities, etc.
Because I watched everything through a screen since mom and dad plopped me down in front of the wide-screen babysitter, when I go outside everything goes by so slowly. What’s there to do? Where are all the fast-moving lights and colors? And the exciting noises?
I don’t understand a world that doesn’t have a frame around it. It feels so fake.
Because poor people deserve to die.
I miss lockdown, too. I never got why lockdown disturbed people so much. There was free time. You could go outside as long as it wasn’t in a crowd, and you kept safe distance. Everything went slower. I have to say I miss all that.

Water Crisis in the Wester USASubmission Statement: according to the article, there is a water crisis brewing in the Western USA. Though there is plenty of information to be found on the drought via internet searches, very few seem to be acknowledging it as a problem, and it doesn't make national headlines all that often. People are still moving to the West, even though climate change and what could be poor water management could cause water prices to go even higher than they are now, perhaps resulting in water refuges in the future.

Wow. Blatant racism. Incredible.
This dude posts on vegan and Buddhism subreddits and drops some hardcore racism in collapse. So weird.
Wow, you're blatantly racist.
Not a fan of illegal, economic migrants, but I don't want to see them drown or freeze to death either. If these "do-gooders" think they're doing them a favour by dropping them off in the Québec forests, in January, think again !
https://web.archive.org/web/20230121163154/https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-quebec-roxham-road-border-crossing/
What does "not a fan of illegal, economic migrants" mean?
Not a fan of people violating immigration laws to gain the system. Like "refugees" refusing to be rescued because they don't want to live in a particular country, they want to live in a country that has even better government aid and services.
>Maltese patrol boats have not been picking up migrants at sea because
the migrants themselves refuse to be rescued by Maltese boats,
>
>He explained that the migrants did not want to come to Malta because
that would make it difficult for them to proceed to Northern Europe.

Hope that helps explain things.
Just because it's the law doesn't make it ethical. And you'd be stupid to not look for the most stable and supportive environment when leaving your homeland. Don't tell me you wouldn't go past Mexico for Costa Rica if you knew CR had a better support system than others.

Submission Statement: News that the City of New York is providing free bus tickets to migrants heading north to claim asylum in Canada highlights an urgent need to address the situation at the border, Quebec's immigration minister said Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Montreal, Christine Fréchette called the report "surprising." She said Ottawa needs to "solve the problem of Roxham Road," which is an unofficial border crossing south of Montreal used by tens of thousands of people last year to claim asylum.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday that his administration helps in the "re-ticketing process" for people who arrive in the city but want to go elsewhere.

To say nothing of the fact that the US built the most dams in history in the early to mid 1900s. There is NO FUCKING way there isn't a control mechanism for these reservoirs.. its just A holes who know and can don't and won't... there is no water shortage. “held down by monthly menstruation”? Dear God what an idiot.
I've been a stupid ass smoker for 40 years now. I quit for 3 years and was dumb enough to take it back up.
I can't rationalize it, but it is just what it is. Quitting would be much better for my health and for my wallet, but I don't want to quit. How dumb is that?

Who's really using up the water in the American West?
Why American cities are struggling to supply safe drinking water
infertility would be a fantastic solution to the whole *destruction of our biosphere* problem and a nice poetic 'fuck you' from nature back to us
we deserve to go extinct the way we have have 'extincted' millions of species of animals, plants and insects... and even non living things like soil and glaciers and the goddam atmosphere. There's fucking trash in the lowest point of the ocean and the most isolated parts of the poles. There is chemicals in the fucking rain. We have pillaged and poisoned everything in existence cos we suck. Hard.
PS and it was all so that a tiny fraction of us could have obscene wealth and own 5 houses with 11 bedrooms each and a garage full of luxury cars
if intelligent life has already found us, or will in the future, we will go down in the history books as a bunch of apes that got too smart for their own good, and allowed their selfish, greedy instincts to spread like a plague and destroy our home
or, this is no life anywhere else, and it's only us. Imagine we are the only source of life in the universe and we obliterated everything in a couple of hundred years, the blink of an eye in universal terms. It is very hard to take in.
Excellent insights, thank you.
Same for the med shortage, in Western europe you have since 1 year regular shortages of Paracetamol (same as Tylenol but in Europe), and various antibiotics. Mostly for children.
Why I fear going to prison above all else. What if Im assaulted, what if staff is corrupted. Worst case scenario I can end it except I can't because you're basically on suicide watch 24/7 and life gets worse if you attempt anything.
Northern Europeans also seem more likely to develop autoimmune diseases, potentially because the plague was such a strong selective factor for robust immunity. As a Euro-American with long covid (which may be autoimmune), I say fuck you yersinia pestis!

Submission Statement:
The dominant counter collapse narrative of our age (or hopeium) is that so called renewable energy will replace fossil fuels as our primary source of power.
Unfortunately wind turbines, especially massive mega-turbines are examples of fairly extreme engineering. To replace the huge amounts of energy we extract from readily abundant and highly dense energy sources like fossil fuels you need to construct truly massive wind turbines. Such turbines are extremely complicated to engineer and potentially quite fragile as well. The blades must be enormous, very strong, very lightweight, and the system must be precisely balanced, and carefully controlled so as to operate correctly within design constraints.
Turbines exist within a chaotic natural environment where bird strikes and extreme weather can cause damage which may require repair or totally destroy towers. And even in ideal conditions small manufacturing flaws may lead to catastrophic failures.
As our society eats up available sources of energy it becomes more clear that the metabolic cost of simply maintaining our infrastructure and meeting our current energy demands is enormous.
When one comes to understand the physical complexity and constant upkeep needed to maintain a complex system like a massive wind turbine or an electrical grid the calorie crisis our civilization faces becomes far more apparent…

Yes. I go a couple days feeling fine then I get very depressed and hopeless. I do not want to kill myself though. Collapse will be way too interesting
I think you might get the proletariat on board with wealth redistribution and justice, but when you tell them "by the way, *your* standard of living is going to drop like a rock *too*." they will quickly lose interest.
Individual people like you (and me) trying to be more self-reliant and consuming less is good, but a desire to make this effort is not the way to bet for people as a whole.
Suicide is not illegal. It's illegal to be assisted because how easy that would be to be abused to murder people. No one takes your property away if you commit suicide or anything.
While these jokes are concerning; what is even more so is the fact that Canada (some other locations maybe doing the same) has rolled out an assisted suicide. If I remember it correctly depression is “on the list” for using it. Furthermore families who are going to FOOD Drives and churches are asking for information about these as they have nothing but more fear and pain ahead
I can agree with assisted suicide for untreatable diseases and the like but it takes a cold narcissist to say “sorry your depressed have you considered our suicide booth? “. Instead of fighting against the scocietal problems that cause these things
> 500 deaths a day as
Imagine tomorrow you hear that 2 men blew up a building and killed 500 US citizens.
And then for the whole week each day this happens. 500 citizens blown up to bits by suicide bombers.
Just think about it.
Yup, you know what the reaction will be.

Well, you should take a tour in the [weekly thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/10oz86a/weekly_observations_what_signs_of_collapse_do_you/) and go through a few tens of the testimonies (most are from the US). They disagree with your particular situation.
There are definitely food shortages, for sure not all empty grocery stores, but items missing or super inflated.
Maybe your pantry is fully stocked (good for you, it should), but I highly doubt it's the case of most American pantries.
About social unrest: at least in the Western world US is the closest country prone to that (with the insane amount of guns around).
And should we talk about US politics since 1 year? Honestly it's a shitshow.
You can also add covid numbers rising again, healthcare system collapsing, meds shortages (if you have a kid, good luck finding Tylenol in a lot of areas), housing crisis...
Disney’s Strange World tries to introduce collapse but misses the most important partTheir civilization faces resource depletion and will collapse if they don’t save their electrifying crops from dying. In the end, they decide to save the planet by letting the crops die and adapt to a new world without cheap, abundant energy.
One thing they conveniently ignored however, which will be painfully obvious to anyone here, is how there was no widespread death and destruction when the power went out. They ran out of cheap energy and everyone was just happy to adopt a new low energy lifestyle. It’s as if the decision to kick cheap energy didn’t even cost that much at all. In reality, tons of people would have died from malnutrition, lack of access to healthcare, or social unrest.
I guess it’s hard to spin such despair into a happy ending. Sad reality is there will likely be no happy ending for the kids who enjoyed this movie.

The toll of nuclear war would be instantly catastrophic for those who are within the immediate path of the weapons. But a new study shows just how deadly the scope of such a war would be.
A nuclear blast would cause worldwide famine, according to the study, published in Nature Food on Monday, as massive amounts of soot would block sunlight, disrupt climate systems and limit food production.
"[It] would be a global catastrophe for food security," the authors said.
Even a relatively small nuclear conflict, such as one between India and Pakistan, would be devastating, researchers found. A week-long nuclear war involving about 100 weapons and the release of 5 Tg, about 11 billion pounds, of soot would kill 27 million people directly. The study said after two years, with international trade at a halt and a 34.7ºF temperature drop, the famine it creates would kill 255 million people, assuming that the rest of the population got the minimum food needed to survive, about 1,999 calories per capita per day.
The largest scenario examined, a week-long war involving 4,400 weapons and 150 Tg, or 330.6 billion pounds, of soot – such as one that would occur between the U.S., its allies and Russia – would kill 360 million people directly – and more than 5 billion from starvation, the study said. The density of the soot would reduce global temperatures by more than 58ºF.
"While amounts of soot injection into the stratosphere from the use of fewer nuclear weapons would have smaller global impacts," researchers said in their article, "once a nuclear war starts, it may be very difficult to limit escalation."

# Content Suggestion
We have had multiple people come to us over the past year with concerns regarding the quality of information on Medium in general and the writings of Umair Haque in particular; these concerns centre on the content being mediocre quality on a good day, information often being dubious, and (in Haque's case) being pretty much clickbait for the community. As these concerns are now at a critical mass, we are seeking input from the community;
1. Do you think we should, as a general rule, ban Medium links from being submitted to r/Collapse (noting that some may still be approved if the submitters get prior approval from moderation)?
2. Do you think we should ban Umair Haque's stuff specifically?
3. Do you think we should do both?

We welcome any feedback or questions you have regarding these changes and updates.
Additionally, what are your thoughts on the state of the subreddit overall?

OUR PRECIOUS CHILDREN NEEEEEEEDDDDDD SISSYHYPNOPORN LEST THEY BECOME MURDERWORTHY TERFS!
Your absolutely correct and that wasn't my point It's not cruel or anything else it just is. If you're assigning value to something because we're using it up as a resource is the same as calling it cruel. We're part of the system we're eating, and with it we get eaten in turn. It's all just trophic states trying to find a local minimum.
Saying that we're going to become the savior of it by exiting the stage in some spectacular mass calamity, or as increasingly common on this sub, by the willful decision to become the last generation is just as much an act of hubris. People are giving up on their human nature, human ecology. They just want to go quietly into the endless void of time as a species and be forgotten. That notion definitely deserves some examination. If this was at an individual level people would be calling suicide hotlines.
You already live in a Fascist state my friend..
Thank you for your kind words, best wishes to you and yours.
That already has been happening.

Edit: it's so ridiculous that the colonized (yes, they still are, just by other means) are ripped of the very thing that would benefit themselves the most AND than are blamed for not having more 'renewables' and burning fossils, because their masters neither share the knowledge (patents) nor help them to build their own infrastructure.
(I know it' s on purpose, it's infuriating)
The fact they are even indebted to the developed world, while beeing exploited, extorted and strip mined for millenia is everything you need to know.

The galactic plane is dusty and filled with electromagnetic anomalies, we are passing through it now and have been for many years. This can cause lots of problems, the sun will mini nova in 10-20 yrs causing the earth to pole shift and all that CO2 won’t matter because you’ll be dead. There’s plenty of science on this as well, its just not on your twitter feed. Wake up, the CO2 hype is not a threat to life on Earth, it’s a mechanism to fleece the last remaining resources from the population before we careen.

Geologic records indicated every 12,000 years this happens, the data is in the ice cores, it’s irrefutable. The data is at Gobekli Tepe, and many other ancient sites. This is why they are building underground bunkers in Antartica, after the careen it will be near the Equator.
This fact of life has been discovered and researched and they have no solution other than bunkers and possibly a space ark. Bunker sales and construction are up 1500% worldwide in last 10 years. The elite know and are preparing now, I suggest you take care as well.

This is Collapse related because it demonstrates part of the reason that more Americans are falling deeper into poverty is due to the apathy and greed of wealthy Americans who have the means to help, but choose to lecture about Jesus instead.

Massive fire breaks out at oil refinery in Iran | CNNSS: Haven't seen much news coverage, but it seems that many important facilities in Iran were the target of coordinated strikes last night/this morning.
Could this be the opening stages of a new war? It's well known that Iran supplies Russia with weapons, and it has been said that the possibility exists that Russia could help Iran in creating nuclear weapons. The recent strikes included things such as weapons manufacturing plants, a nuclear research facility (After which earthquakes were recorded in the area, coincidence?), the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guard, a Quds base, and an oil refinery.
While we're all looking towards Europe and Ukraine, could the Middle East also be about to erupt? Iran could conceivably cause chaos in the Straight of Hormuz, disrupting oil supply chains, and causing more economic pain for many nations. At the moment, I would imagine that the regime is in between a rock and a hard place. Don't respond, and look weak leading to possibly being overthrown. Respond and possibly ignite another war.

Most likely scenario is that the earth gets slightly warmer, maybe a degree, and increased CO2 causes much higher crop yields, and there is an end to world hunger. More likely is that the earth continues to cool as it has for the last ten years.
Who isn't it fucking up? The elites maybe? Get out of that tribal mind set. It's not me vs you it's us vs them

Epidemiologists have been sounding the alarm on this practically the entire pandemic. There were studies coming out two years ago that indicated COVID altered t-cells and could lead to increased risk of developing diseases long-term due to a permanently weakened immune system. Yet our governments have been telling us to not worry about it, that the pandemic is over, that it's equivalent to the flu for healthy individuals. We're not masking, there's no push to stay updated on boosters. We're just letting this circulate like it's the common cold.
This is the tip of the iceberg. Long-COVID and weakened immune systems are going to absolutely shatter health outcomes across the world in coming years. We're already seeing it. It's not a coincidence that hospitals are now inundated with children fighting for their lives against illnesses like RSV and strep that are typically thought of as run-of-the-mill winter illnesses.

What are some best practices for stockpiling antibiotics and managing health ailments at home during a crisis situation?Well, first off, I highly recommend picking up a copy of my book "[The Home Doctor: Practical Medicine for Every Household](https://www.digistore24.com/redir/394659/player12333/)" as it covers this topic in depth. But to give you a brief overview, some key practices for stockpiling antibiotics include making sure to have a variety of different types, rotating them to ensure they stay fresh, and keeping an inventory so you know when it's time to restock. As for managing health ailments at home, it's important to have a basic understanding of common illnesses and their symptoms, as well as knowing when it's appropriate to seek professional medical help. Additionally, keeping a well-stocked first aid kit and having a plan in place for emergency situations can greatly help in managing health ailments at home during a crisis.

As I am often discussing in this subreddit, wildlife is in a rapid downward spiral of habitat loss, pollution and extinction. With 1 in 8 birds currently going extinct, avian flu and the weather warming to the point that birds are no longer migrating, we are standing on the precipice of losing thousands and thousands of species to extinction within our lifetimes. Especially our feathered friends. It’s happening faster and faster each year and for the yellow-headed blackbirds in this video, entire generations of the species were just lost in one singular event.

The USA is the most evil nation that exists and is the primary force upholding global capitalism which is killing planet. It's destruction would be the best thing to happen
I think I have found the problem:
You are operating with an objectively shitty definition of the word suburb :D
Let's say that I set up some tents in the woods, next to a large town. Me, my family, and a few friends move in. We are now a smaller community adjecent to or within commuting distance of a city.
Do you think it's reasonable to call a group of unregulated tents in the woods next to a city "a suburb"? I don't think so. I would not call it that, and think nobody should. That's just not what is commonly meant by "a suburb". If that falls within the definition of a suburb, then the definition is shit.
When someone says: "I live in a suburb of XYZ", and it turns out that means they live in a tent in the middle of nowhere (but within commuting distance!), and shit in the woods... Would you feel mislead? I would. Because that's not what "living in a suburb" usually means, even though it conforms to the dictionary definition you provide.
As I see it, "suburb" implies urban organization, planning, and regulation. Something which does not have that, is, at best "a settlement", and not "a suburb". Any dictionary definition which does not pay respect to the fact that "suburbanism" has the word "urbanism" in it, is a pretty shitty definiton.
I'm fairly certain there's way more bullets then there are migrants.

This is about collapse on many levels. The image shows European Mediterranean beaches; the news about boats sinking with dozens of people on board have been less noticeable in the past years, especially since Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
For the refugees, collapse has already happened. That's the thing, it's heterogeneous. So, how would you like to be treated if you were a refugee? Or do you think you'll never be one?

A collapse mapHello fellow collapsniks,
Here I'd like to share a small world map that I made, with countries color coded in regard of their collapse status.
That map is for my personal use, I just like to see the global overview of collapse at once. The criteria that I used to determine if a country is collapsed or not are also personal and not meant to be agreed by all of you.
In short:
* *Collapsed (black):* if the country has collapsed, either politically, economically (Venezuela), societally/structurally (Haiti/Lebanon), if it is in a civil war (South Sudan/Yemen), or in a full open war on its territory (Ukraine). Or all at once (Syria). These are only examples, there are more than that. Afghanistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka...
* *Close to collapse, serious structural concerns (red):* the country is on the verge to collapse, it would not be surprising to see it collapse entirely under a few months. Includes Myanmar, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Russia, etc
* *Noticeable, medium-impact troubles ongoing (yellow):* the country is going through a crisis, however not that major that it may trigger a collapse in the short term. Still important to monitor. Includes the US, China, Serbia/Kosovo, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Iran...
* *Functioning countries (green):* all the rest. It doesn't say anything about the political sanity of the country (North Korea is the perfect example), but the day to day life for most of the population is stable, with bare minimum needs fulfilled. I'm not stating it's an acceptable level though. Includes most Western countries, but also India, Algeria, Namibia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Mongolia, Japan...
Keep in mind that in any collapsed country, you will always find households or even small towns/villages that are doing fine. Even in a full scale global worldwide collapse you'll have some of those. So stating that "*my friend lives in Syria and is doing fine*" is not a good argument to declare Syria as un-collapsed.
Also note that a collapsed country could go back to green pretty fast, depending the situation. If the Ukraine war finishes, and Russian troops withdraw, then the reconstruction will begin; it'll take years, but the country would be pretty fast (weeks) back to a normal functioning status, even with structural weaknesses - electricity, public building to rebuild... So it would be green again.
Please tell me what you think. And especially if you think that "*this country should be yellow and not red, or yellow and not green*" or anything like that: I don't promise I will blindly agree with you (most probably the opposite :p) but I'm curious to expand my point of view about those.
Also I may have forgotten some countries in yellow/red/black, please tell me if I did!
Again, this is not made to be "the truth about collapse status worldwide", it's just my personal point of view. I found the exercise quite interesting so I'm curious of any feedback :)
EDIT: had no idea I'd get so much reactions (I expected to be mostly ignored).Thank you all for the feedbacks, I did miss a lot of countries, and some are of the wrong collapsed colour. I will update it this week and publish an other one this Friday as "Casual Friday". I published it first on Thursday but it was refused by the mods, so... Guess I'll stick to Casual Fridays for now.
It is my personal opinion that the sooner that humans are wiped from the Earth the better it will be for every other species excluding the rats, viruses, and cockroaches so the more stuff that destroys human sperm the better. I would rather us quietly dwindle away in painless species extinction rather than suffer starvation and then nuclear war or all the hundred other ways we could die off in misery.
Edit: really meant to say "decreases the human birth rate" above. Anyways best of luck to everyone deeply concerned with this topic. I'm childless so I've already done what I can without going to jail in ramping down our deranged group science experiment.

I recently posted about Southwest's flight scheduling systems failing over the holidays. Now here we have another example of the lack of investment of infrastructure is continuing to show the decline of current systems, as everything is hanging on together through threads and glue, until piece after piece in this system start failing.

Absolutely. Birthrates were lower in Europe in antiquity before any modern birth control existed than Mali and Niger today. Women in these countries WANT giant families:

The majority of these nations calories come from foreign food donations. Tie food donations to birthrates
Health insurance isn’t cheap, but half your paycheck? Either you have no paycheck of value or you’re buying a plan on the open market.
Speaking in a strictly ecological sense (hahaha lmao) this could be a good thing. Modern medicine is one of the leading causes of population overshoot. If that goes, we could see a drastic drop in the population within a few years. Resource consumption would drop, and the strain on Earth would be reduced.
Again, strictly in an ecological sense (hahaha lmao).

The current situation in the Swiss Alps indicates the region might face economic collapse as most of the region's inhabitants rely on tourism as their main income source.
Additionally this will have downstream effects this summer as there is going to be next to nothing in terms of snow-melt to feed the Rhine river, a major shipping artery.

Yeah: as countries grow wealthier and more educated, birth rates fall. It's already below replacement in several countries. That trend will continue worldwide. Food is a non-issue in terms of quantity since we *already* produce more than enough. Humans worldwide and throughout all history have lived sustainably, we are not different.
The people touting overpopulation have been wrong ever since it became an idea. It's rooted in hatred for the poor, racism, and offers no solution to problems except letting people die or genocide. So fuck off with the myth.

The new great division is truly the battle of the sexes. Perhaps it's the dating apps but I've never seen such hatred between single millennial/gen-z men and women in my longtime job and community. The "Mike Pence Rule" is the unspoken status-quo outlaw and HR keeps giving us mandatory team building BS tasks with nervous looks on their faces. My niece just graduated college, and apparently there are like no men on campus. The graduation ceremony was totally a parade of women for all fields. I can't help but ponder that men are acting like women and women are acting like men. Good luck young folk, yall going to need it sooner than later.
Followup: Mods took it down, thanks to them!
Stuff either escalates or it de-escalates. I'm just not seeing a scenario here where it de-escalates, and I'm surprised this has kicked on as long as it has without escalating.
Be excellent to each other and enjoy your lives right now, 'cause this is as good as it gets. Once this really heats up, it'll be a fast, dramatic kind of heat-up.

Hello! My name is Emma, or EmmPMC on Reddit! I’m a very frequent browser and first-time poster in this community!
All too often we see the term, “faster than expected” used to describe the speed at which our climate changes. We see it so often, in fact, that it has become a meme in this community! So, I was scrolling one day as usual and was reading all the comments with everyone joking around about the term faster than expected. I thought to myself, “I want to wear this message on a shirt, because it represents what I believe in!” Turns out, the shirt didn’t yet exist. The only design out there was just boring text.
So, I hopped on Fiverr, had a cool design made, then hopped on Printify to find eco-friendly direct-to-garment options (cue waiting for my sample to arrive to make sure it wasn’t crappy quality), then finally, I made a Shopify account! And now here I am! I offer you a small little eco-friendly print on demand store to purchase exactly what I wanted just a few weeks ago! A shirt to represent how I feel inside! They come in hoodies, shirts, and cropped shirts and in whatever colors I thought looked cool!
Yes, this is \*technically\* an ad, but both myself and the moderators agreed that my design may offer some value to this community, for those who want to represent their internal screaming on the OUTSIDE. I’m not doing this to make money. I originally only did it so I could own a shirt I thought of and really wanted, then figured maybe other people like me would want my design. A large percentage of my profits will go directly to the Effective Altruism Founder’s Pledge: Climate Change Fund, which is one of the most effective climate change focused charities you can find!
… oh, and this is related to collapse because, “faster than expected” is read every day, in almost every single collapse post. Studies always underestimate our situation, which makes sense. Nobody wants to be wrong. But what it leads to is a misunderstanding of how dire our planet’s situation really is. Which only worsens the effects of climate change, because actions taken are less urgent... Until the next article that’s maybe a little bit more accurate to how bad things are about to get.
If you’re still reading, I’m assuming it’s because you also want clothing to represent what you care about most! So, here’s a link to my Shopify store! https://c1b1a8.myshopify.com/ I’m very open to suggestions on how to improve 😊 Happy Friday Collapsnicks!

Hey all I'm the guy that designed that Captain Planet design that this group used for a cover image for a while. This is something new from me.

If Gates cared about any of this stuff he wouldn’t be withholding vaccine rights for profit. He doesn’t do philanthropy to “prevent collapse”. He does it to secure his wealth and political power to dictate policy.
the rationalizations of childish minds are truly a thing top behold. No. The global north sits square at the center of the culture of destruction. The average American consumes resources at a rate far and above anyone on the planet. The Anglo- American oil cartel laid the foundation for the addiction to fossil fuels that rape the planet.

Destroy civilization. Return to monke.
I get what you were saying. Too many people on here have really poor comprehension skills. Take it as a learning experience to try to word things more neutrally. "Old" is often a pejorative. People saw that and immediately got triggered. I bet you wouldn't have had the down votes if you said "retirees."

Wtf?
I didn’t make a value judgement against old people. I pointed out a fact. For the record, I’m pushing 40 so I’m not far off from thinking about things like this.
Is this why you dipshits are downvoting? Because I pointed out that currently society is aging rapidly? That we’re building an inverse pyramid of more old people than young people. Literally all social programs are predicated on there being more people working and producing than retired and not producing.
I didn’t make a statement about old peoples worthiness? But apparently things can be summed up to “he said there are going to be more old people! How mean!!!”

Just a FYI, this comment was hidden, even at +15 so someone working at Reddit or a mod (maybe?) didn't like it.

It’s pretty pathetic when you report someone to the Reddit care team and private message them to talk shit for disagreeing with you.

Right. You didn’t dm my main account or block me either. Grow up, man. It was just a discussion about food supply preparedness.

15 dollars can get you 50 pounds of rice. That’s nearly 83,000 calories for the price of an expensive fast food meal.
