“If these banks go down, the economy gonna take a hit too and so is your job security” The economy can eat my ass and if you want me to worry about job security, than dont gut it in the first place
Are you really so aware if you think you can control how your kid ends up?
It's a scummy practice, but in my case if I go and put the charm on with my local chase bank teller they usually find me some sort of workaround.
Just make a post or ask for it under a popular post or maybe ask it in this weekly map posts? There should be enough of us web developers here in this sub. It's easy to do it for a web dev, don't waste your time trying to be one. I don't have time to do it btw.
thanks for this but, i studied anthropology and know a bit about population genetics. Not sure what you mean "doesnt yield trustworthy results"- is that another way of saying "these are two separate, very different but equally successful evolutionary approaches"?
Comparing different populations of different species is a gambit if ever there was one.
Yes. Things have gotten better in Venezuela. Venezuela was more in the news around the 2018-19 unrest. Maduro has made a bit of a recovery and is in an even better position after Columbia elected a left-wing government and normalized relations. Venezuela's oil sector has also picked up since Russian gas was sanctioned heavily.

You can use the pretext of "looking out for number one" for anything. Your brain will always find a reason to treat some wants, some desires, some fantasies, as actual needs.
inb4 people saying "Well you *didn't have* to work for them! It's your fault for not doing your research in the company you work for!"
Do you have no more than $250,000.00 deposited per bank, and is it a US bank which is FDIC-insured? If so, you are unlikely to lose any money even if your bank fails. *You might lose access to your money for a weekend.* (You may also be protected beyond what I'm saying, but I'm guessing that what I said covers most people with US bank accounts)
The normal system when an FDIC-insured bank fails is that on Friday the FDIC and the bank announce publicly that the bank is insolvent, is closing, and that the FDIC is taking over. Depositors (you) are informed of this directly, along with information about a new bank account which will be available starting on Monday with all of your protected funds (that up-to-$250k).
You are free to take your money out now, but the good news is that the protections guard against any need to do so. That's also good, because many people worried about a bank run withdrawing their money will _cause_ a bank run.
Here's [a description of FDIC account protection](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance/brochures/deposits-at-a-glance/):
> COVERAGE LIMITS
> The standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.
> The FDIC provides separate coverage for deposits held in different account ownership categories. Depositors may qualify for coverage over $250,000 if they have funds in different ownership categories and all FDIC requirements are met.
> All deposits that an accountholder has in the same ownership category at the same bank are added together and insured up to the standard insurance amount.
A big note: I would _NEVER_ leave more than $250k in a single bank, as I don't want to give up FDIC protection. It can be split across multiple banks, and _each_ is protected for $250k. It is good for anyone who can run into that (e.g. just sold a house) to know of these thresholds.

Lol idk why you people think the BRICS countries are going to flourish. It is led by some of the most corrupt governments out there.
The higher classes are conditioned to have disdain for any class lower than themselves. The deltas and gammas aren't conditioned to enjoy working in dark warehouses, factories, and construction sites, they're simply conditioned to be revolted by things like books or plants. This is not utilitarian. This is the engineering of a slave class. Just because the police run in with drugs to quell dissent rather than truncheons doesn't a utilitarian society make. The rules are the same: disrupt the social order and you will be put in your place by force.
They also worship Henry Ford. A raging antisemite, industrialist, and inventor of the assembly line. It's no mistake that they worship the man who created the proto-birthing system that would eventually give life to every human (besides the savage-born) on the planet. They revere him as a god. An anti-Semite eugenicist is their god. Sounds pretty authoritarian to me.
I think this discussion is exactly why the book is brought up 50+ years after it's writing. There are multiple perspectives and none of them are necessarily wrong.
I really wish mods would clamp down more on HYPERBOLIC THREADS with titles in ALL CAPS that rarely do much more than rehash articles that have already been linked to recently.

So I did some digging and you are still pretty much wrong. Total death from 2019 to 2020 was a change of +504,431 more. Out of that you commented that car deaths were up 20%, they are up but not 20%. Car deaths increased 2,469. Homicides were up 7,901, which was really high. Probably an increase of more that 30%, I did not do the math.

So let's look at the top causes of death between 2019 and 2020. Heart disease was up 31,791. Cancer was down -669. Injuries/accidents (+car) were up 19,136. Strokes were up 9,045. Respiratory disease were down -5,342. Alzheimer disease deaths were up 11,883. Diabetes deaths were up 13,459. Pneumonia deaths were 3,712. Kidney deaths were up 695. Suicide deaths were down -2,677. This was an increase of 81,033 deaths in leading causes.
The difference between Total number of deaths and leading causes of death (above) is a difference of 423,398. Now they did not have any covid deaths in 2019 and in 2020 they said their was 345,323 deaths, that leaves 78,075 for other causes not listed above. Your argument is going to be that those 345,323 deaths were not covid but listed as covid. Which some of them could be but are you really thinking 345,323 deaths were diagnosed wrong?

And you know if you have 1 death today and 2 tomorrow that is a 100% gain? Just because something says 20% increase you still need to look at the numbers.

Edit: Trying to make information more clear.

Oh shut up
Submission statement:
James Hansen and colleagues have released another stiffening study, this time about the rate of climate change and why it’s accelerating. The paper is titled “Global warming in the pipeline” and it's a good read.
Quoting Hansen: "At this moment, humanity is taking its first steps into the period of consequences. Earth’s paleoclimate history helps us assess potential outcomes."
Too bad the oil-soaked political establishment doesn't see it this way.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m sitting outside it’s 80 degrees before noon on February 23. I moved from Florida a couple of months ago but one thing I know is… This is not normal! I woke up to a few random bugs in my apartment. Had to turn the central air conditioner on by 8 AM. Everything is budding, the wasps are out, my allergies are crazy.
Reportedly this is not so, but I thought the same and I'm still not clear on it. Perhaps the el nino phase impacts the planet's absorption of heat? I hear tale it may bring global temp past the 1.5C mark, temporarily, which is more than just moving around heat. Let's look into it.
Edit - ok so apparently during el nino more heat is released from the ocean, whereas during la nina heat is absorbed from the atmosphere into the ocean. So it acts as a closed system in that sense, as you suggest.
But all the while, thermal forcing continues, such that the enso causes global surface temps to oscillate along the upward trend. So next el nino we will get some of that juicy heat back into the atmosphere, meaning temperatures on the high end of an ever-increasing average. The overall effect is that warming ~appears~ dampened during la nina and amplified during el nino.
Seems like there are also effects involving cloud formation, precipitation, I can only guess what else, and some of those are prob not simple closed-system interactions.
IANAS I bet you could tell!

Considering I gave you a set of three different numbers, you are either selectively misinterpreting it, or truly don't understand what negative, neutral, and positive are. I already answered your "question" before you even asked it. You cant sea lion a person who can see through BS.
I would argue that the AU is in a similar boat of overreach by the police as the US is. No not nearly as violent but the surveillance state / laws that can be used to harass citizens isn't the ideal either.
I would refer to the 'friendlyjordies' ordeal for a look into that, but i would absolutely take your day to day interactions over those here in the US for sure not disputing that.
I think to the original commenters statement not every police entity is as bad as those in the US.
But there's definitely improvements that can be made in any of those systems to benefit citizens more fairly. I would take an Garda/Aussie Police over uncontrolled US police any day of the week though for sure.

It’s very fortunate there aren’t any fascists around then, isn’t it?
We’re taking care of the only fascist in Europe at the moment, and he lives in the Kremlin.
Honestly when you’re a few years older you’ll get it. Otherwise have a word with yourself.
whatever doesnt kill you just makes you wronger.
>That chemical has industrial uses for cleaning and greasing machinery
So? What does that have to do with anything? Dihydrogen monoxide is often used as a coolant in nuclear reactors is that bad too? Things can be used for other things. Other things it's used for doesn't tell you any actual information about it.
>that are toxic in seemingly innocuous foods.
Literally everything you eat is toxic. It's the dose that makes the poison. The dihydrogen monoxide that's used to cool nuclear reactors is toxic but it makes up 86% of every apple you eat- organic or conventional.
>At this point I only buy ingredients at the store not any processed foods
Not gonna work. The toxic nuclear coolant is in everything you buy- fresh ingredients or processed.
You are linking to a blog post. Sure, it's on Harvard's page, but it's still a blog post and not peer reviewed
But there are all kinds of articles questioning the connection of eating eggs of small to moderate quantities and poor health outcomes. For example:
https://academic.oup.com/advances/article/3/5/711/4591584
>For much of the past 50 years, a great deal of the scientific literature regarding dietary fat and cholesterol intake has indicated a strong positive correlation with heart disease. In recent years, however, there have been a number of epidemiological studies that did not support a relationship between cholesterol intake and cardiovascular disease. Further, a number of recent clinical trials that looked at the effects of long-term egg consumption (as a vehicle for dietary cholesterol) reported no negative impact on various indices of cardiovascular health and disease. Coupled with data indicating that the impact of lowering dietary cholesterol intake on serum LDL levels is small compared with other dietary and lifestyle factors, there is a need to consider how otherwise healthy foods can be incorporated in the diet to meet current dietary cholesterol recommendations. Because eggs are a healthful food, it is particularly important that sensible strategies be recommended for inclusions of eggs in a healthy diet.
I go outside but I haven’t had it and I don’t go to crowded spaces except airport sometimes but I’m more careful than most and also distance myself
Ah yes, I was just wondering why I only go outside when I have to go to work.
But I thought the democrats were the good guys? I thought they were pro union? Did reddit lie to me?

And it's not even a guess, it's a pretty direct through line. We know that Facebook deliberately allowed their algorithm to harm the mental health of teenage girls, in some cases to the point of suicide, in order to keep them looking at facebook ads. This is according to Facebooks own internal investigations
“Results from the CDC's 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey show startling trends. Nearly 3 in 5 teen girls (57%) said they felt "persistently sad or hopeless." That's the highest rate in a decade. And 30% said they have seriously considered dying by suicide — a percentage that's risen by nearly 60% over the past 10 years.”
That’s the entire article.
Looked into the results a bit more and the boys felt these same emotions about half as frequently.
https://nccd.cdc.gov/Youthonline/App/Results.aspx?TT=A&OUT=0&SID=HS&QID=QQ&LID=XX&YID=2017&LID2=&YID2=&COL=S&ROW1=N&ROW2=N&HT=QQ&LCT=LL&FS=S1&FR=R1&FG=G1&FA=A1&FI=I1&FP=P1&FSL=S1&FRL=R1&FGL=G1&FAL=A1&FIL=I1&FPL=P1&PV=&TST=False&C1=&C2=&QP=G&DP=1&VA=CI&CS=Y&SYID=&EYID=&SC=DEFAULT&SO=ASC
I worry about her too. She stood up and said what needed to be said. By some miracle the media took notice when they had ignored others before. She has prompted more public discourse than anyone on the collapse wiki. Schellnhuber compared her to Joan of Arc. She found the truth of a complex issue at a very young age and won't back down. She will likely find her way to Overshoot, Limits to Growth and other writings. May she retain her precious sanity.
The best case scenario is that it will be ugly but force change. Worst case scenario is that it will not be survivable by humans. With knowledge of collapse, the stresses induced could easily topple our civilization along the way.
my thoughts are is that it is not relevant to your ridiculous assertation

I'm not entirely sure this kind of observation is really allowed here on this thread, so I apologize to the mods in advance for any extra work if they have to remove this.
Sometime last year I ran across the Little House on the Prairie collection at a used bookstore, the exact same set I had as a kid. I bought it mainly for nostalgia purposes, set it on my desk and forgot about it. Last week I unburied the set from my desk and decided to give them a read; it's been decades after all, and maybe now the stories will hit me in a different way.
Oh boy, have they ever. I started the third book, Farmer Boy, last night. The series started in 1860's Wisconsin, the Big Woods; moved to Oklahoma for Little House, and now Farmer Boy is set in New York State. I could go on about the skills we have lost, like building our own homes, our own furniture, making cheese, butter, our own clothes, etc. but what is really hitting me more than anything right now is the descriptions of the country, weather and the animals.
According to other posters, our winter this year has mainly been missing, and this is after several years of 'WTF is happening to our seasons'? In contrast, I have read about thick snowfalls, sugar snows that are good for maple sap production, -40 winters that were regarded as normal, animals that are so not used to humans they don't know to be afraid, Pa Ingalls going out to hunt and coming back with plenty of game, no problem.
Today our world is poisoned. Some of us dream about going out to homestead like the Ingalls family, but our earth, air, and water are toxic. The seasons are now undependable. We have poisoned the planet from Arctic to Antarctic, there is nowhere to go. The wild animals are sickly, full of ticks and plastics and spreading disease, while the animals we raise are full of medications and hormones to make them grow faster ... and they are still spreading disease despite all those meds pumped into them. What wild animals that are left will not be around for much longer, really. It doesn't get much better with fruits and vegetables; our soil is so depleted that what we grow is barely nutritious and now lab-grown substitutes and overly processed 'plant-based alternatives' are being pushed as cool and normal.
Then, there are stories about neighbor helping neighbor. The whole Ingalls family was struck with malaria in Oklahoma, and their neighbors traveled for miles between them and other sickened neighbors to take care of each other. If one family needed help with work, they would trade tasks to help each other get stuff done. Such a huge contrast of the "F' you I got mine" mentality of today, and the story of people turning people caught in the recent Buffalo blizzard away to fend for themselves.
I stopped watching nature documentaries a few years ago because they're just too depressing, and I feel the same about these books but I am going to finish the series anyway, no matter how depressing they are to me right now. I feel it's important to remember how humans used to take care of the others in their communities and how this planet used to be. It's all gone forever, it seems.
I'm no better. I am part of the problem. And all I can really do is try to make my footprint smaller and smaller, hoping that my small footprint will combine with other small footprints to somehow make a difference. I'm going to swallow my depression, make a loaf of fresh bread to go with the chili I'm crocking up for dinner and pretend that things are, indeed, cool and normal because otherwise I'll just collapse into a sobbing heap into the corner.
Sorry for this depressing rant. I really do hope that we all have a decent week.
You humans lol. Like youre something different. Stupid shit like this gives these topics little validity in the mainstream.
but but but but.....Still bEtTEr and Elon mUsK and you are a communist!
Peak oil was probably the first real mechanism of collapse I was made aware of, beyond just a general understanding that we were ruining our environment and that "global warming" exists.
I can't speak at all to the when, it's not something I spend any time researching anymore. Like everything on Earth, oil is finite, so there's no question we will one day run out (unless we find, like, an asteroid full of hydrocarbons and start burning that, but that's suicide for the climate, obviously.) EROEI continues to get worse and, barring paradigm-shifting technology or temporarily stalling the graph because of new discoveries where permafrost or ice made it previously impossible to access, will eventually get so bad that we can't afford to extract any more even if it exists.
But honestly, who cares. Peak oil was a concern for the 1900s. At this point in time, we'd need to not just cease all emissions but start pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere in the next 10-30 years, and there's more than enough oil for us not to do that (and because the world is built on oil, and systems are resistant to change, that means we will probably be burning right up until the end.)
We're potentially only a few years from an Arctic ice-free summer (BOE) and will almost certainly see it within 10 or 15 years. That's a massive tipping point for ocean heat, and we're already past so many more global tipping points that it's one we simply can't afford. Once we've had a BOE in summer, it's full-steam ahead to an ice-free Arctic year-round. The ocean will cook. The plankton will be further doomed, the methane clathrates will pop, the permafrost will have released all the carbon and methane it's holding, what's left of the Amazon will turn to desert, weather will be more extreme and unpredictable than ever, flood and drought will sweep the world, sea level rise will wash away our coasts, the air will turn toxic, and human civilization as we know it will end, oil or no oil.
We *needed* peak oil to stop our CO2 release for us, decades ago. We missed our chance to take the wake-up call, and we've overslept far too late for a systematic problem with oil to get us where we need to go. Only globalized anti-oil legislation can stop oil before we lose the Arctic ice... but even then, if we stop burning we affect atmospheric albedo and might lose the Arctic anyway (barring geoengineering.)
My own controversial opinion is that even though we don't understand *at all* what geoengineering might do to us and the planet (and could be a death sentence for us, like Snowpiercer or whatever) since we fundamentally *do* understand what will happen if we don't do anything, maybe we need to start pouring sulfur into the atmosphere or the like now to slow warming and stabilize the climate so that we can afford to kill oil with laws and willpower and make a change for renewables before we've lost entirely. Assuming it doesn't kill us for reasons unknown, if we can convert to renewables (including solar) and start working on CO2 draw-down while we're pouring sulfur into the atmosphere and stabilize the rate of change and start the cooling process, then I think we'd see a boost in efficiency of solar when we're able to stop as the atmosphere clears up, which could make for a nice perk and give us some built-in energy growth post-transition.
But we have to survive the increasing rate of pandemic-level threats first, and frankly, I'm increasingly dark on that.
What you're saying is like: "If the world is so bad why don't you go ahead and kill yourself?"
I don't advocate for killing people who are already here, I just think it's better to not bring more helpless people to suffer in this dying world.
I envy you and your lack of $40,000 in debt acquired immediately after leaving college. If I wouldn't have gotten lucky with crypto I wouldn't have had any sort of safety net to this day. I still don't feel free though-it wasn't a big enough win.
It can last much longer than you'd expect. Everything you wrote would have been just as applicable in the 1980s. This shitshow has been playing for at least 40 years and isn't slowing down. I think "Slow Collapse", where we just crawl along in a crumbling society for generations, is more more likely than a sudden overnight collapse.
And I think the reason we avoid talking about Slow Collapse is because its actually the more terrifying scenario. Fast Collapse can be hopeful. Look at you already dreaming about your farm so you can ride it out and give a better life for your children! You're still holding on to the dream!
But Slow Collapse doesn't have that hope. Your children will be born into the same dystopian society but slightly worse. There is no escape. The government will still collect taxes. They'll take your land if you're in the way of their plans. Your children will be forced to attend a public school where they will be expose to violence and drugs. Then one day a train derails and dumps toxic waste upstream from your homestead. The government that you pay all those taxes to doesn't have money for the cleanup.
I agree with the article here, this is insane. Are we seriously that desperate to maintain our capitalist economy that we need to resort to policies that, quite frankly, do more harm than good?
They want to roll civil rights and labor laws back a century, but definitely not the tax rate on the wealthy or corporations.
Christian nationalists recently took away women's right to health care and self determination. If you think that's not a problem then, you know... I'm not ok with that and I'm not ok with you
white, christian death cult domestic terrorists. biggest threat. nasty stuff
we can all see it directly with our eyes, denial is over and will get you nowhere.
wanted this up high in thread; EPA testing for the following chemicals in air only. they have not tested water or soil yet.
"**Vinyl chloride**
**hydrogen chloride**
**Phosgene**
Phosgene is a colorless, nonflammable gas at room temperature that smells like freshly cut hay.
**n-Butyl Acrylate**
Clear, colorless liquid with a strong, fruity odor.
**Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether Acetate**
A colorless liquid with a fruity odor.
**2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate**
Appears as a clear colorless liquid with a pleasant odor. "
empty tanks contained benzene remnants and what a company official referred to as "a harmless lubricant", which could mean anything and has not been referenced by the EPA yet.
all other info you've heard is from the company officials, this is all the EPA has so far of their own testing.
only air samples. no soil or water

not just the chlorides but other chemicals in other tanks were involved. phosgenes, etc.
Yes but they derive their power from the power of the purse which serves the oligarchy. If we create a economic system that puts people and the planet first we have the ability to solve the problems. You can find more information linked in my response above that explains why I think you have the power to help effect real change outside the gerrymandered political system. If you have the will to show interest you have the will to create change. Institutions cannot be trusted to police themselves but if the economic system had a independent Auditors group that answered directly to you you would have the power to see it regulated as a honest and just broker.
I am a disabled veteran with 4 auto-immune diseases and I came out of retirement to attempt to create a more just economy based on green energy and putting people of the planet. Despite that my broken ass intends to try to go down swinging, that is why I filed a provisional patent to put it in my estate to be run by a democratically administered trust of which you would be a part assuming you live in participating geography. We have the means to create change simply by showing interest to force the matter on our politicians. If you like this idea as a means to push back against what I see as the obvious toxic effects of OPEC+ on democracy. Including the sabotage of Biden by Saudi Arabia over Ukraine to put the hurt in our economy leading up to the election.
So if you want the 99% to have the economic power to try to improve the world I am trying to give it to you. I am not speaking in the abstract I am speaking of a specific actionable plan if people are interested.
Propagandists love to instill learned defeatism into their population. Look at all the times you hear people say "Yes, it's horrible but it's the system we have, it's the best system, so what can you do?" I believe by privatizing the concept of a war bond/energy future to green energy you can start to have proof of work/commodity based monetary policy without the forced scarcity of gold but instead by creating the most valued commodity in a climate crisis: green energy. By privatizing it we take the decision out of the hands of our leaders. By giving it democratic governance it puts the integrity of the system in the hands of the people, not the oligarchy like today's economic system.
The decision is yours collectively if you want to let fossil fuels gut democracy and take your voices. Now you have a potential tool to make green energy cheaper and more bountiful than fossil fuels, create a UBI, fix healthcare, student debt, living wages and any other societal problem the 99% has a mind to address. No more asking permission to change the world for the better. More of a demand really, in a free market you have the power. Fossil fuel interests have weakened and corrupted our leadership to the point of being ineffectual against their fossil fuel donors. But that deregulation they intend to use to topple democracy can now be used against them in the free market to destroy their market share with cheap green energy. Yes they may try to regulate against the monetary oversight system that answers to the people to maintain the status quo but given that OPEC is not offering to end taxation after 40 years of anti-tax narratives they would have some interesting time explaining why they are not reducing and/or phasing out taxes to protect the fossil fuel industry. Tax Jubilee Green Compromise versus continued OPEC influence over our politics which seeks to take away and curb your rights choice is yours.
Absolutely. Modernity has as much chance to be Man's suicide as it has to be Man's salvation.
If you read History according to the Globalists, life before the Industrial was "nasty, short and brutish". But that couldn't be further from the truth.
People always harp on about the Black Death.. as if modernity is benign in regards to creating deadly diseases! If anything, modernity is ripe to create a disease that will probably wipe us out. What about deadly epidemics which are caused BY MODERN industrial farming like COVID, swine flu or SARS. Hell, even the The Spanish Flu was also exacerbated and facilitated by the First Industrial Modern War (WW1).
Disease and epidemics was even less of a problem for hunter gatherers because their population densities were drastically lower and they tended to live in wide open spaces. Disease and plague came about when humans transitioned to urban living and agriculture where high population densities and cramped spaces facilitated the development and transmission of plague.
You could say epidemics are the cost of progress and that the further you go back in time, the less of a problem epidemics were.
The problem is, most of us have a INFANTILE view of what constitutes TRUE innovation. For as many things that Industrial Society has given us, it has taken away and disrupted. It has also produced new monstrosities and brought death and oppression on a scale hitherto unheard of.
As you mentioned, we invented "better" farming and production, but that exact same industrial agriculture and production is what is responsible for the destruction of the biosphere, soil depletion, deforestation, mass extinctions, climate change, microplastics, forever chemicals, air pollution, water pollution etc etc.
Do not forget the dark side of industrial society.
If by "better", you mean greater productivity and turning a profit then sure, Industrial society is better. If you mean "better", in terms of its effect on human relationships and the environment then not necessarily. It's more nuanced than that.
For instance, the Industrial Revolution, while ushering in a new age of material wealth and decadence also caused massive disruptions to social life of the common people as well as the environment. An example would be the “enclosure movement” which sought to remove the common people from the land, who were practicing labour-intensive agriculture to replace them with more “efficient” modes of industrial scale agriculture which was more profitable. Peasants were evicted from their rented or communally owned land, unable to earn a living from farming and traditional handicrafts due to the advent of industrial modes of production and pushed into the cities and factories, where poverty, pollution, disease due to unsanitary conditions and dense populations, unregulated labour (including child labour) was rampant. The environment was also affected, replacing both cultivated and wild lands with industrial wastelands filled with coal mines, foundries, mills, steelworks, and blast furnaces, producing an unprecedented level of pollution. In fact, an area known as the West Midlands, which was rapidly transformed and heavily industrialised, became known as “The Black Country”. The legacy of this industrial transformation still lives on today as the WHO, in a 2016 study, estimated that 92% of the world’s population lives in places where air quality levels exceed WHO limits.
True innovation must not simply be about making something bigger in scale or faster or increasing productivity but should also consider negative externalities as well as the disruptions it may cause to the environment and community relationships. Only considering an increase in productivity, when evaluating innovation, is short sighted, many more questions must be asked if a tool is to be considered innovative. Is the new tool cheaper than the one it replaces? Is the manufacturing process for the tool sustainable and clean? Is it as small scale as the one it replaces? Does it do work which is demonstrably better than the one it replaces? Does it use less energy, what type of energy, is it renewable and non-polluting? Can it be repairable and maintained close to home, or does it require a monstrous, carbon-emitting supply chain for it to be delivered, repaired, and maintained? Does it disrupt anything good that already exists, such community, family relationships and the environment? There should be many parameters, other than purely productivity and the ability to turn a profit, that must be met before something can be considered truly innovative. Our standard for what is innovation, must be raised from one that only considers profit and productivity, to one that also considers the dignity of the human being as well as care for the natural world.
To be honest, I view the technology of our ancestors as superior to ours purely due to their sustainability and longevity, whether it be the wood and water powered technology of the Medievals or even the delicate stone craft of Paleolithic hunter gatherers or Homo Erectus (the most long surviving Human species).
It is pure arrogance to think that of our ancestors, who accomplished surprisingly remarkable standards of living and cultures without industrial means and without destroying the environment around them anywhere near the extent that we have today. If anything, I would consider the current industrial society more “brutish” than even the refined craft of the master stone workers of the Paleolithic, with their delicate stone and natural fiber crafts, let alone comparing to medieval artisans. Too many get their view of history from popular depictions such as Game of Thrones or Hobbes.
Well yeah, they are.
I'm not American but I've spent two or three christmas periods in NJ over a decade ago. I remember the snow getting pretty damned deep during my winter visits. I haven't been to the east coast since but I remember people trying to drive sedans and SUVs in icy and snowy conditions thinking they can drive as if there's no snow or ice.
Those visits taught me how particularly retarded Americans can be. No Karen, you can't drive up hill on ice in your SUV just because it has 4WD and no, Karen, 60f in February isn't "nice". It's a sign of a stable climate collapsing.

They don't want realism. They're pushing for total victory and yet another puppet state, and just dump out propaganda hoping that people won't see straight through it.
So they can wholly deplete Ukraine's resources to stave off the collapse of the Empire for a few more years - pipe away their natural gas on the EU market (Part of the 2014 agreement, which caused Crimea to secede in the first place) and the food out of their market abroad (to the Middle East, mainly) - if I was Ukrainian, without the pollution of American/UK-backed paramilitaries and extremism, I would sign the Russian agreement simply because it didn't include putting all of Ukraine's resources onto the European market. It means that Ukrainians have to pay more for everything, and the only thing which caused them to take a frankly disgusting agreement was under the threat of outright war from the paramilitaries.
This is a propaganda point - /u/Familiartoad has no educational background in Economics or the related Engineering fields to even begin to understand what was in that agreement, is a white middle-aged "cis male" from Adelaide, AU, who is surprisingly active in transsexual forums.
Do you really think that this man has the faintest idea of why Crimea seceded in the first place?
That happened in 2020. The final week of January, starting 24/01/20, and ending 31/01/20, was when it was shutting down China. Throughout February, it spread through Europe and the USA via the Chinese diaspora - Milan and New York, firstly.
Ambiguous in the sense that neither side has any kind of moral authority. If you go looking you can find evidence that supports either propaganda model, which implies that they're both sullied and not at all worthy of unwavering exaltation. And that shouldn't really surprise anyone, since there's few if any examples of governments, elected or not, who aren't monstrous in some form.
But. I have zero sympathy for a regime that executes deserters and force conscripts sixteen year old boys to protect their 'right to rule.' I have immense sympathy for the innocent lives lost in this conflict and the soldiers caught up in this against their will.
It'd be my hope that this conflict fully illustrates how little power elites of any language or culture care about human life or personal sovereignty, but perhaps that's too optimistic.

I see all of earth experiencing a pole reversal coming in line with the suns solar maximum. This will be similar to the carrington effect. This is a cosmological cycle occuring every 12,046 years with the next even occuring in sept/oct of 2046. Trees/homes/everything will burst into flames from a CME at earths weakest moments. Earthquakes and volcanoes will be extremely active as the poles flip and the energy created from it will super heat the mantle under the crust which will be the primary drivers of these seismological events. After the poles flip and restrengthen, the amount of co2 and other debris in the atmosphere will cause the next great ice age ans bury us all under a mile of ice. This will occur very fast. Faster than scientists would admit.
r/H5N1_AvianFlu has just been created. They’re looking for mods.
Maybe we’ll finally have a culling of the most invasive, destructive species on earth
it doesn't compare... and even the "kill all men" types don't literally want to put them in gas chambers and actually kill them all.
Not ambiguous - the government after 2014 devolved into a gangster state, effectively a rogue nation, which makes use of paramilitaries to bully the population into compliance.
The 2014 war started because several regions, predominantly Russian, wanted the Russian agreement - but the only reason that Ukrainians didn't was national pride. From a strictly pragmatic point of view, it meant that Energy and Food would no longer be subsidised by the Ukrainian state, and that they could export more of this gas Westward - combined, this meant German prices for customers in one of the poorest countries in Europe.
The poorest areas of which turned into a fucking warzone, feeling that this was a plot to genocide them out.
The war escalated with tens of thousands killed, now Russia has escalated it further expressly to support the breakaway regions. It's a mess.
But it sure as fuck isn't a mystery. This all happened over the past 5 years, quietly published in the back pages.
I see places get fixed around me when they get a new owner. I am in a very old neighborhood so homes often need lots of upkeep/work.
I am not in portland. But i do find that the neighbors are always hopeful for a small local landlord. Then we know to get his number and text him when there are problems (tree fell over on one property and the kids living there were freaked and had no idea what to do). Etc.
I cannot imagine those restrictions leading to a good long term outcome except an extremely overbearing, snoopy always checking up on me landlord. Is that what the city wants? To offload policing to landlords because the landlord that is always checking on me is the one that will find me bringing in unwanted pets or drugs etc. Geez, what a world. I think i would pick a tent too just ... Yuck.
Sometimes we think in isolation. We do this the most with our energy options.
Wind kills birds.
Hydro kills fish.
Coal pollutes the air and water.
Natural gas emits methane.
Solar has waste and cobalt/lithium mining issues.
Nuclear waste is scary and it takes a long time to build a new plant.
These lines of thinking all lead to one conclusion - we shouldn't have any electricity. This is called the Utopian Fallacy. If a solution isn't perfect, we shouldn't do it. I find permaculturists especially get a real kick out of feeling morally superior for hating on the above, using that rationale, but remain in la-la-land without any real world solutions.
If there was a perfect solution, this wouldn't even be a topic. Unfortunately for us, we live in the real world, and we need to design power systems. When power goes out, people die. It's that simple.
A temporary power outage, if sustained, can kill hundreds or thousands of people within a few days. What happens when entire society sees long term and possibly permanent energy crisis'?
What happens when countries all around the world figure out, collectively at the same time, that to phase out coal oil and gas, they need 3 to 10 times the power generation (i.e. removing coal = electrifying transportation = TONS more power needed). What happens when all countries try to hire the same labour force, try to engage the same vendors, to build the same products? "Sure, we can meet that order, you are country 79 on the list, and we should have your order completed in roughly 40 years". There is going to be a RACE for renewables. It will be the war of the future. Who gets the vendors to build them the power they need.
So lets flatten that out, and get started now.
That requires dispelling myths and misinformation.
A large part of the solution is absolutely going to be to try to reduce consumption in all ways possible. However, our current energy situation on planet earth is that 84% of our energy comes from Fossil Fuels (https://ourworldindata.org/energy-mix).
To replace fossil fuels isn't a question of IF. It's a question of WHEN. They are non renewables. They emit carbon (and don't forget OTHER waste also). We are sitting at 420ppm CO2 right now. You may think that CO2 isn't bad. That plants grow faster. So what is okay then? 840ppm? 1680ppm? 16800ppm? The reality is that it's going up 2.5 to 3ppm every year, accelerating, AND THAT MEANS THAT TREES ARE NOT CAPABLE OF REMOVING WHAT WE ARE PUTTING OUT, or it would be going down. And at SOME POINT, if it keeps going up, we won't be able to breathe. It's already making us sick (see in video). So to say it's not a problem, is delusion.
We HAVE to get off them, because they are, by very definition, a non-renewable resource.
For the economists out there - ask yourself what happens to the global economy if 84% of the energy running it disappears. Even if you think CO2 emissions don't matter, we still have to replace fossil fuels before we run out, even just to save the economy and prevent the collapse of civilization as we know it.
Permaculture isn't THE solution. But it can be part of the solution. Why? We could stop injustice in the world, transition all farms to permaculture farms, and pat ourselves on our backs, but once coal, oil and gas run out, society would utterly collapse and not in a good way. Death, starvation, riots.
When people starve, they destroy the environment to feed their families.
Renewable energy is the soft landing pad that will help us pull the economy into the realm of sustainability. Then, regenerative practices like permaculture can restore our earth. This isn't the "new world order". This isn't "the grand design". This isn't "the great reset".
This is just humans reacting to inevitability.
So why is there such a big misinformation campaign to prevent building the very Noah's ark that we KNOW we need? In one word: Greed. In another: Corruption. But lets debunk some of their BS, shall we?
Or more succinctly, in 3 words: Fk Rupert Murdoch.

What can I do on Reddit? Down vote and block. If you don't get it, you don't get it. The end.

It may be the heat that kills them, but it's the high C02 that would cause them to lose consciousness well before the heat would get them. In theory it wouldn't be a bad way to go, but who knows how closely the practice follows the theory.
How about you do the opposite?
If someone shit talks your dead mother in front of your face and you whack them, are you the instigator just because you threw the first punch?
Thank you so much for your kind words and compliments!
Like you, I have hope that nature will prevail. It's not much, but I have spoken to a couple arborists in Utah and they have been reporting that despite the rampant bore beetle issue and the toxicity, there are adaptations currently happening in the Utah pine forrests. It's somewhat encouraging to see. Hopefully changes like this will continue to happen and if we as a people can mitigate our negative impact, there will be enough time and generations of change for the climate to not collapse.
Once again, thank you for the kind words. Best wishes to you.
And the horrible houses are a breeding ground for black mould. Americans truly couldn't give a fuck about Native Americans.
Then you'll have to be vigilant of sharks that evolve to jump straight out of the water to take your head clean off as you're leaning over. Your body wouldn't know what happened as it goes to tell mates of the big fish swimming around.
Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!!

I think now that the War on Terror has wind down some our lords…I mean stakeholders in our economy need to get public support to launder public funds through the DOD into their pockets and Ukraine is their answer.
I really really doubt Russia will confront NATO directly. I also really doubt China, who’s economy depends on western capitalism is going to suicide themselves.
Bus and trains are actually amazing at carrying passengers compared to roads. A single double decker train line can carry as many people per hour as a highway with 6 lanes in either direction. That's for **one** track. LRT is less, but still far more than cars.
Rebuilding cities is also going to be something we just have to do. Cities like Chicago, Toronto and New York will probably be able to just increase their population without increasing their borders easily, but cities like Atlanta will probably have to do a detroit-style restructuring.
As for rural people, Most of the USA and Canada had train services to rural communities, but they were exactly that. Living 45 minutes out of town by car just because you want to was never viable before our massive wasteful car system, and it still won't be. You'll have to have a reason to be out there (a farm or homestead) or congregate into a village. We will have to see our rural areas change to the more old world system where people live in villages and not just strung out along main roads.
The way I see it, we can do this voluntarily now, or be forced to when the EROI of fossil fuels drops, everything gets more difficult and expensive, and you're now stranded outside of town with no way to live there. Unfortunately I know which one will happen, given the painfully obvious water problems in the SW USA right now.
In Colorado as well, I have a relative who does the same work and have listened in during appointments, it's heartbreaking to see so many people in need. I'm not really sure where she stands on everything but during family events hearing family repeat all the abhorrent right wing talking points is sickening. They genuinely want to see most forms of assistance ripped away from people, it's so unbelievable disheartening. Several members of my family have gotten help at some point in their lives and many are currently on some form of assistance. My family on both sides came to this country as immigrants, looking for a better life and for the most part, they got it. But as always it's "fuck you, I got mine".
On one occasion everyone was talking turns lambasting the (small) influx of refugees we've had recently. They listed off the countries they were coming from, my brother and I (even though I'd say he's tech-bro Libertarian, he can call out the absurdity) point out "Now what do all those countries have in common? Hmmmm?" Radio silence.
I have probably too many years as a moderator to count, including on /r/atheism . Never for pay, of course.
I can tell you that the open space is easily trolled/shitposted/astroturfed to death. These sites are designed to burden moderators, it's free labor for reddit. Moderators are glorified garbage collectors.
There are too few mods everywhere, and that's a feature.
There are huge platforms of users that can focus on a "post" and flood it. It happens all the time, even on reddit. This isn't sustainable, so the option is: add a shitload of moderators or close the comments.
If you leave the comments open, all you're doing is allowing full mediocrity and stupidity to abound, at best, or you're leaving it open for the companies/institutions with the best budgets to hire posters or "shills" and drive the comments. It's still capitalism ruling the game at that point just by swinging a large big money dick.

There’s something known as common law.
If someone is hurting you, causing bodily injury or poisoning you and your family, you have the right to stop them and defend yourself.
In this day and age, if you try to stop the people poisoning the crops and rivers and ocean you’ll be imprisoned.
Take your resting body temperature, it should be 98.6°F on the dot.
If it’s consistently lower than 98.6°F that means you have poor metabolic function and underlying chronic inflammation. It means you’ve been exposed to hormone and nervous system disrupting toxins and your immune system is now stuck in a TH2 mediated state of hyper allergen . You can no longer mount a proper response to infections . You are stuck in a state of allergen/autoimmunity.
You’ll have symptoms like the G.I. irregularity, fatigue, bloating, mental health problems like anxiety, irritability and depression.
The healthier you get , the worse your symptoms will become .
The worlds shittiest prep would be fentanyl- hear me out. Take any generic pill, add fentanyl and go to pharmacies that have been looted. Fill up a bottle marked for opiates and leave it there. Biker gang overlords love them some pills. These bait traps are much lower risk than trying to get into a gun fight.

You mean you couldn't resist going on an ill-informed, fantasised, racist rant about the Chinese without even having read the article ?
This should be a self-reflection moment about how heavily propagandized you are. You just went on an unhinged rant out of nowhere.
Market socialism is not the same as Capitalism.
Free Markets are not unique to Capitalism. You can start to transition to having worker-owned self-directed enterprises as a "step 1" toward a more traditional and complete step toward getting to a traditional Socialism.
Wolff is a Marxist economist who has been beating this drum for a long time and it's the most practical way forward IMO.

GameStop. It’s going to be the only company that isn’t illiquid due to the fact a large majority of its shares have been directly registered by retail investors who have never sold even after 2 years of price manipulation. So I don't know if people would really consider this collapse related but....
Apparently rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio is dating a 19 year old began after he was pictured on a yacht with said young woman. Although evidence for them actually being in a relationship is shaky, the internet kind of freaked out about the age gap between the two. However I thought the far bigger scandal should have been Leo on the yacht at all. He's one of the few celebrities that is big on climate change, and here he is basking in the excesses of capitalism. The fact that his new so called relationship is the bigger deal while the world is collapsing around us just felt like a bread and circuses moment. Don't look up indeed.
> I think the lockdown was a glimpse of what life could've been if society was more responsible.

I think this is a big one for me. It was so nice to be able to go for a walk locally, and not bump into loads of other people all the time. Nature started to return - There was so much bird song! And I saw deer almost every day as they felt safer to venture out during the day time.
Then everything went back to "normal" and I felt like I was thrust back into slave like factory conditions.....
What are these unifying policies you speak of? Seems to me its the Dems that are creating the divisive atmosphere.
*This guy here wants to tell me we're living in a community? Don't make me laugh. This is America, and in America, you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business.*
*Now fuckin pay me.*

Note: not to riff too much on America, this is equally true of the whole world pretty much. It's just a movie line.
Get up early, go for a run and then do some strength training, either weights or calisthenics. Do strength training at least 2x per week (I’d recommend full body) or do a 4 or 6 day split (don’t do full body on these), whatever you prefer.
Run at least 2x per week as well.
Personally, I wake up at around 5AM (not saying you should), run (or sprints), workout, fast and study throughout the morning (I’m in college), go to class in the afternoons and part time job in the evenings.
I think the most important thing is to focus on personal growth and being busy lol (actually busy, not watching a tv show saying you’re “busy”. Read a book, watch a “hard” movie, just do things that are out of your comfort zone.
And when I’m not busy I usually dab and life is more enjoyable, eyes get super red so I gotta use my eye drops lol.
Cheers man.

I mean, idk, last year there were 333 homocides and 600+ nonfatal shootings. The populace has a 22% poverty rate, and teenagers suffer from rates of [mental health problems, substance use, sexual experience and pregnancy, and sexual violence](https://www.jahonline.org/article/S1054-139X(14)00388-7/fulltext) equivalent or worse than some third world countries.
You’re goddamn right I’m scared, but not about ethnicity or urban/rural dichotomies.
Baltimore is already semi-collapsed. It can’t afford any more disruption. I don’t think it would be permanent bc as a US city near the capital, they’d have some resources to call in, but it would definitely take a while to unfuck itself.
Love it. That guy is now a mod at r/neoliberalism, probably.
'99 baby, and though I have some fond memories of 'the good old days' before personal phones or computers or 24/7 availability when we would still have to use the yellow pages and On Demand/DVR was the closest thing to Netflix, even in those early years things were changing. It was obvious, too, due to how they didn't last.
Things I loved were still dying. The tree in the front yard that we sat on to drink caprisun and talk about the latest Disney episodes. It still had rot from the resurgence of Cicadas and had to be cut down. And that was the last time the Cicadas ever came out in such a force. My bug collection died because there weren't bugs to collect, not even dead ones. Severe allergies crippled me half of the year. Eventually, my friends die, too; accidents, murder, suicide. Nobody could cope. I think nothing has ever really felt real, but up until maybe 6th grade, we could ignore that fact. In 4th grade, our school's garden died, and our science teacher was really upset about it. We were all uncomfortable, like we understood but also didn't; that was 2007, one of the hottest years on record at the time, iirc. Barely got our bean sprouts to grow that year. The world was supposed to end in 8th grade. Instead, it just got crazier. First semester of my senior year, a kid in my government class showed up in a Trump mask and ranted about 'rape as the natural order' until the principal came and physically removed him. I didn't get to vote that year either - birthday was just a few months too late - but that kid in my class did.
My earliest memory is of realizing that I'm alive and panicking as a result. I've always been a highly sensitive person, I can't help but feel with and for others. Despite this, that semblance of unreality has been a constant in my life - even as I am actively experiencing acute realness through those around me. There is a disconnect. I don't like it at all.
Intelligence cannot exist and hope to be sustainable. Just because you’re living off the land doesn’t mean shit. Elephant birds quickly went extinct when humans arrived in their territories, because humans just went around eating all their eggs. Humans are an invasive species. Tool use was mans first sin.
The theory that pumping enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere has been around for two centuries and supporting evidence for around fifty years, yet we are still doing it. These morons are just dumber than the rest of humanity. Their ideology might not even be worse than capitialisms planetary genocide for profits.
I personally think the BoA statement is simply newsworthy propaganda.
I’m not sure *why* they want to whip up this paranoia, but I think it’s truly unfounded because the USA…
(a) will ‘raise the debt ceiling’ (which is a farcical concept in the first place)… and
(b) will never “default” on debts denominated in U$Dollars, because they literally can “print” dollars to service those debts. This is just fundamentally true.
This is the exact reason that US Treasury Bonds are the *safest* investments, because the USA will *always* pay out USTreas Bonds when they come due. Why? Because they can effectively print the money to do so.
Banks ‘create & allocate’ approximately [97%](https://www.forbes.com/sites/francescoppola/2017/10/31/how-bank-lending-really-creates-money-and-why-the-magic-money-tree-is-not-cost-free/?sh=4be01af83073) of the money supply. Government creates approximately 3% of the money supply.
So the majority of “[money manipulation](https://youtu.be/4uNGoyslFSc)” is being done by commercial banks.
But the US Gov can always force the Fed (*Federal Reserve*, aka the US Central Bank) to pony up the cash the Gov needs.
The US “National Debt” is effectively a representation of the amount of money that the US Gov has *put into circulation for people to use*.
Eliminating the “[national debt](https://youtu.be/LxJW7hl8oqM)” means eliminating the money the US Gov has put into circulation. And that forces people like you and me to obtain money from *banks*, which has abusive levels of interest attached, and requires more money paid back than paid out, which is a fundamental financial problem.
I mean I've done something similar to it deliberately when I'm stressed enough. As a cope. But no, it doesn't... it isn't the same as meditating your brain off until you see yourself in the third person or go numb for ten minutes. This is... external. I felt like an NPC a little while back, slightly less now but I still kind of "suspect" I am.
Yeah. That thought has occurred to me.
I guess I'm just some animal crossing NPC dude lol.
\*The player is now pissed off at the 4th wall break, but they knew I was going to put this in asterisks\*
I really don't understand how you think this will be like the Industrial Revolution. Machines could never teach themselves to think nor innovate. This won't be like the Industrial Revolution, because drones will take menial jobs and AI will take intellectual jobs. At that point machines will become servitors.
The only jobs that woupd be safe from machines are the creative fields, but that no longer looks safe either. There aren't going to be millions of jobs being created, and unless we lean on a UBI we're going to fall into Elysium. It doesn't have to be that way, but unless people figure this out before we get to that point that'll be exactly where we end up.
I'm going to say no, I have not noticed this. It's depends on the circles you move in, the people and data you surround yourself with. Your outlook and mental framework. I see gallows humour around, but it's always been there and I don't feel I'm seeing an increase.
No matter what happens in coming decades. If we survive or not. If there is a collapse or just a change to something ultimately better. Eventually our Sun will die and all life in the solar system will follow. Unless we have made it as an extra-solar species by this point all of it is less than a memory. Aristotle, Hawking, Newton, everything we ever were and ever could have been will be dust.
I accept that, but I'm not going to kill myself over it. I'll meet my end fighting to stay alive. It might be time to change rooms as it were. Try a different perspective on for a time.
For anyone reading: Please enjoy your life while you can.
I'm an old-head and have been collapse aware to some degree since my early teens. I've spent my entire life watching the world slowly deteriorate, and things are bad.
*however*
Nothing is over yet, and not all of the important decisions have been made yet. Many have, and odds are this world is going to shit eventually, but we aren't there yet, and we likely won't be for some time. You'll likely have to work and you'll likely need skills, on top of knowing how to keep your head above water while the ship slowly sinks.
Take time whenever possible to smell the roses, spend time with loved ones, and indulge your passions. All of these are cliches, but it doesn't take away from the necessity of these things in people's lives. The *worst* thing you could do right now is to surrender to this fucked up future of ours before its even arrived.
Shit is not always easy, but I've honestly had a pretty good life up to now. Things aren't perfect, but they're a *lot* better than I ever expected them to be at this point. Everyone should get a chance to experience joy and freedom in their lives, and *it is out there* if you go looking for it.
Oh definitely, I would argue that most are already in the denial stage of grief. Our world is not what it was even 10 years ago.
You also didn't have to go 10s of thousands of dollars in debt to go to college back in the 70s, you sound incredibly out of touch...
It's really not so simple... you may have to live here for a while to truly feel what I'm talking about. Most people are so indoctrinated in the current way we are living being the "best" way to live, that even if you try to be social, that desire goes away since most everyone around you engages in anti-social behavior. At work there are many "ladder climbers" and corporate boot lickers who will gladly throw any coworkers under the bus, so you have to be careful who you open up to. Few people make an effort to keep in touch when friends move away, so what good is it going to do for you making all the effort to keep in touch? Public transit? hahahaha. Carpooling is also something difficult to arrange since people want to go by their schedules and not have to depend on anyone (based on experience and a general sentiment that people are undependable).
I mean, all the things you say are valid points, but there is such a cultural rot that they are all hard to implement in general. Although you can find groups of people more socially oriented in non-superficial ways, but it's not easy.
Right, but it's the "fuck you I got mine" attitude that is the root cause of this in the first place. Stop cheerleading parasites my man.

Fucking idiot.
At what point will we give up what? Voluntary compliance to recommendations? There are few if any restrictions any longer. Give up talking about it? If you would like to ignore COVID-19 discussions you are free to do so, just as we are free to talk about it.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it isn't real or true. By and large people have moved on from the pandemic. Most people have stopped voluntarily complying with recommendations and any mandates are virtually gone in most countries. Hell, the state of emergency is over for the US in May.
What more are you asking for at this point?
Not weird. Me too.
I would always get mad in school when I was sick…fever under 100 it was basically fuck you go back to class. 99.5 is a fucking fever for me dammit. I’m sick
Where do you think antibiotics come from? We didnt invent those compounds, they are natural products of bacteria and fungus. These things have long existed in nature.
And I'm sure they lead to a rise in poor health. Infections that would normally kill many don't, allowing them to live despite poor health. Preventing the "culling of the weak" increases poor health, including a rise of chronic diseases. As does living longer for that matter.
Denial. People desperately want to believe that mankind is better than it really is, because to believe otherwise negatively impacts a person's will to live and makes relationships and participation in society highly problematic at best.
When you are confronted with and forced to accept the reality of the banality of human evil, trust largely becomes impossible. You see that trust is fundamentally irrational because people are not so good, moral, restrained, reasonable, sane...They may do anything at all to you, and not only will others not come to your aid or defense, but they will find elaborate ways to disbelieve you and blame you for being victimized.
So far as I can tell, this process leads to withdrawal from society that can take various forms: Reducing all social contact to as small a social circle as possible, embracing pure isolation (aah!), escape through intoxication and addiction, misanthropy, schizotypal personality, loss of sanity, antisocial behavior (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em), developing an adversarial relationship with society, deaths of despair and suicide, etc.
What some are able to do, some of the time, and with extreme difficulty...
Reconcile the fact that people are not worthy of trust with the conflicting fact that survival is largely impossible without trusting someone sometime.
Humans are a social animal and work together in groups to survive. Virtually no one manages to escape that feature of reality. So, navigating this impossible situation requires maintaining constant strategic watchfulness and being ready and willing to pivot.
Fucking exhausting...
Did you seriously just scoff at three massive, resource rich countries which exert immense regional influence? Top kek, western redditors must be living in a whole other world if they think strips of paper (GDP) matters more than the resources at your disposal in the new world. Europe's great GDP will be worthless when it turns out Western Europe has almost nothing of value in terms of physical resources in a bifurcating global economy. You're basically arguing financial speculation is genuinely worth more than actual resources.
That's intellectually lazy at best, dishonest at worst. Just look at the number of studies published focusing on gender roles. Google scholar. It's pretty easy to see. It's gone up sharply since 2000. Gender roles are a core tenant of cultural liberalism.
If you're looking for a study, that's where intellectual dishonesty comes in. You know very well no school or institution is going to fund a study looking into the infiltration of anthropology by cultural liberalism.
If you're going to pull the card of authority from your studies, are you studying it casually? Did you just take a couple classes? Or is it your actual major? Or are you a professor? Even If you are it doesn't matter because, as I mentioned before there are conflicting opinions within the academic community. Just because you've been "studying it for some years' doesn't mean you're an authority.
When did I backpedal on women hunters? My very first comment says that they were the exception not the rule, acknowledging that they existed. Not one single time have I ever said that they didn't exist.
I have not backpedaled once.
And I already covered the sources in my first paragraph. There's no formal studies and there never would be. Google scholar. Keyword search anthropological journals for various keywords or phrases from the liberalist school of thought. It's quite clear.
"You live in a fucking desert! Get your kids, get your shit, we'll make one trip, we'll take you to where the food is!"
Never gets old.

Yeah, some of these seem pretty low effort and/or US-centric. Mass shootings count, but that suicide bomber in Pakistan does not? Hurricanes count but typhoons do not? Oh, a major flood happened *somewhere* in the world this year? A *town* runs out of water?
your brain health and your gut health are literally the most connected system in the body. they directly influence each other.
Greed and the need to exploit is in our nature, programmed by evolution.
What a cop out. What a tired neoliberal line of bullshit to rationalize that the ruin of the world was brought about by the ideology and greed of the global north.
The current capitalist hegemony is only in place because amoral fuckers with no qualms using murder, genocide, enslavement and twisted abrahamic religions chose to slash and burn their way to power. There is nothing natural in this inequality... even monkeys are aware of inequality and we could have chosen another way... but the west packaged and sold its way to the world... a seductive, comfortable but ultimately toxic and unsustainable "lifestyle"... and now republicans are revealing what really lives at the heart of the west... and its ugly as fuck.
The piece of shit will win. It's all but guaranteed.
The best thing you can do for your mental health is stop to read / listen / watch the news. This includes reddit. You will notice you mental health will improve rapidly.

Climate change makes a plague more likely; and we all saw how fast covid spread. So stupid article. There are other global catastrophes that could change things even faster; but a large percentage of the world is facing famine RIGHT NOW, so wake the fuck up Salon.

I am a millennial, I see zero reason to believe that Gen X, millennials, and gen y will be any different. There is plenty of awful people from these generations and the same types of assholes are attracted to politics. Hell, the boomers were pot smoking hippies and now you blame them for all your problems.
I know many many boomers in my life, including my parents, and they aren't anything like the stereotypical cartoon character villains people like you make them out to be. None of them own more than one house and most worked shitty to average jobs with pay to match. The only ones I ever saw, that were even close to your sterotype, came from wealthy families.
The rich people have pulled the wool over your eyes and made you point your finger at an entire generation of people instead of at them. You really think people like Elon musk (gen x), Jeff bezos (Gen x), and Mark Zuckerberg (millenial) are any better then the rich fucks who came before? Do you really believe there is no shitty gen x, y, and z?Do you think the same people aren't having their minds warped by social media? Do you really think they will make any better politicians? That the same rich, power hungry people won't be attracted to politics and line their pockets?
The key here is that rich people control the world and they want you to blame somebody else other than them. Every year the middle classes piece of the pie shrinks and the rich peoples piece gets bigger, they hope you won't notice and thst you will blame somebody else. Hopefully some day you will get off your high horse and realize that most people aren't so much different then you and that they want similar things. Some day you will realize that all this hate and anger that you direct at your fellow citizens is misdirected and should be directed at those in power, not John and Jane Smith up the street from you.
yesterday i had a day dream about rolling clouds of methane belched up suddenly from the sea floor killing entire cities randomly like that african village with the lake by the volcano where everyone died suddenly from a CO2 cloud.
and i thought: movie idea #376384578 - Noah's dArk. there is this really religious guy. And god tells him to build a hermetically sealed complex and put 2 of each creature in it. And halfway through the movie, where before all this time the audience is wondering if Noah is crazy or schizophrenic or whatever, it is revealed that Noah is Jeffery Besoz (or elon musk or whatever). And so he actually does it! With his millions of millions of billions of dollars he builds this useless fucking immobile ark.
And then the methane clouds come. There is this big montage where we see entire cities suffocated. With sad violin music and intermittent thudding industrial percussion. And then his wife looks at him knowing full well that he is indeed a prophet of god and she is like "I totally forgive you for cheating on me" etc.
Anyhow I thought all that and said I should write this one down, it is so ludicrous it is good. And then i thought no this is a really dumb idea. And I didn't.
But now I just did! You are welcome. All of you.
Lentils are D Shiznit, and also tend to be pretty affordable.
Because its a phenomenon that Trauma Misappropriating causes vicarious trauma. It's my belief that because that generation is raised by millennials, for the better part, so they somehow missed the Gen x disassociation, and had a strong upbringing with focus on trauma because it wasn't until the Millennials the trauma was even brought to the forefront and was really started to being researched and things are being put together that an overabundance of trauma in Young lives causes adolescence and adults to need to spend a whole lot of money and a whole lot of time fixing what happened to them as children. Millennials put such a fight in for their trauma to matter because it hadn't mattered before that no other generation had a voice around how they were treated as children. Gen X but we're probably met with tough love and ended up in rehab and just kind of fell into the background because nothing was ever validated for them anyway. They raised Millennials and they wanted to validate their experiences. Then Millennials raised gen Z's with soft parenting and spoke about trauma a lot, and somewhere somehow it's some way trauma became really cool. They also think that they invented the word Alt. Which derives from alternative music which was invented in the 1990s bands like Nirvana which really started to highlight depression and anxiety. But again even in the description of the music genre gen x gets totally taken out of the equation when they literally invented alternative rock music and the alternative style. But they are somehow pushed to the side and Gen Z has decided that their trauma is so much bigger and their music is so much sadder. But when you're from the suburbs and your life isn't really that bad but somebody tells you that your mom and dad shouldn't have yelled at you and shouldn't have taken away your iPhone because that's abuse then you start looking into trauma and what that looks like and when you obsess over having a trauma story to wrap around to be like everybody else I believe in my heart of hearts that they have investigated trauma so viciously that they literally are having vicarious trauma moments by utilizing trauma misappropriation.
Sometimes I wonder if covid/Mers/Sars were just failed attempts at a great culling. Ofc I lay off the mushrooms immediately afterwards, but I do my deepest thinking when tripping.
Look, I’ve worked in factories and retail and learned you need bodies if nothing else. Sure I can plan a ditch, but always need someone who can dig them because me doing it takes away time from planning.
What guys like you don’t understand is that time is better spent optimizing people instead of limiting. First because IQ is still an average at the end of the day and you never know when you’re going to be at the bottom whenever you step into a room. Even if you’re the only one, congratulations because you’re both the smartest as well as the dumbest. Second is because there will always be more people less intelligent, so you’re always outnumbered and at risk if someone manages to make them revolt in your fascist fantasy.
Personally, I would go back in person to the location that did the test when they are open and ask for a script if they refuse to answer the phone. If they're closed there's always another urgent care or ER that will happily take your business. If you've had the infection for days or weeks and aren't developing an abscess, it could also wait until Monday. 🤷🏻♂️
Renouncing US hegemony at this point equals yanking out your ventilator's tube in the covid ward, at least for the people inside the US. It would cause critical instability pretty quickly (the process leading there is already underway, but not complete).
Not to talk about public perception, a big US sector would consider that an unpatriotic act. So that entails political suicide too.
As both the people and the political apparatus seek to prolong BAU, it would cause a lot of discomfort to endorse US hegemony and at the same time believe it's wrong. It would be ilogical. To fix this, you just need to justify the US.
The only other path is to merely *say* you don't endorse the US but *do otherwise* (participating in US society/market supports the US endeavors outside). You know, the receiver is as bad as the thief. Lest you are one of those 'political extremists' that will actually do any meaningful protest, such as migrating to a place without an economy that is interwoven with the US (are there any of those honestly?). The other ways could be disrupting public opinion or evading taxes, but you would be neutralized rather quickly.
Option 1 (justification) is rather cozy, no?
PS: I'm not that good at writing, sorry for any mistake.
The core problem is **capitalism**.
It’s easy to point to the public and say, “No one cares” when that is not true.
For example, I see people concerned about recycling — even though nothing really happens to it. We all know it’s bullshit, but we still separate our garbage. Frankly, if people didn’t care, my local recycling bin would be filled with trash because the regular receptacle is twice as far away. But people don’t do that and it’s telling.
The issue is that in order to find a solution within capitalism, someone must be able to profit from it. We don’t process recycling because it’s more expensive than using raw goods. Because manufacturers make more money doing environmental damage, they will continue.
When people WANT to practice environmental sound steps, they are often thwarted by the capitalist system. I don’t want to have a car, but there is no way for me to function without one. I can’t afford the alternatives.
Any measures taken that could improve the situation are often weighed by whether it makes *financial* sense. We talk about how packaging must be expensive since it’s a theft deterrent because the environment is not the priority — but making money is.
Many people would happily give up their cars or at least drive a lot less if we didn’t have to commute. But we have business executives deciding people need to come to the office. This could easily be solved if the government passed laws requiring work from home when feasible or gave incentives for every worker who didn’t commute.
It comes down to the fact that we live in a toxic capitalist system which celebrates profit above everything else and that is not an environment for solutions on a personal, community, or global level.
There is absolutely a lot of that in fact it is an actual topic of open conversation that somehow usually ends up along the lines of actively hunting 'demonrats' and 'commies' ..... it is concerning being a blue dot in a very very red place. Somehow once they eliminate any 'other' elements everything will be smooth sailing .....like i said social myopia.
Yes, probably a lot feel that way. I’m a boomer, closer to the end of the boom, born in 1959, so I was a teen in the 70s and the economy was bad. But the belief it would get better was strong. What was maybe a surprise was what boomers were willing to do to make it better for themselves and that’s the turn the world took in the 80s. Looking back maybe boomers didn’t fully realize their trickle-down dreams meant fuck you to everyone else but maybe even if they did they still would have done it.
So you're telling me with a straight face that your life is basically exactly the same as from the age of 16 until you are killed by a farmer, you live in a studio apartment with a chain link fence floor. And every day you watch turds from your neighbors go rolling by, and you also literally shit and piss through the fence floor. You have a shared water pipe, and your food is poured into a trough in that studio apartment you never leave for your entire life.
I've spent time in some of Kolkuta's grossest slums studying disease, and they're not as bad as a factory farm. They're not awesome, but sure, I bet you don't shit in a gutter every morning.
Edit: While I'm here, I'll add that in both India and West African slums, the common practice for a community latrine is a little wooden box built over an open sewer. I was in Indian to look at the economic impacts of antibiotic-resistant TB and meningitis, which are not going away any time soon. So please tell me more about how an office building is so similar to a slum again.
Get some perspective on reality. Please.
Edit: Autocorrect is not always correct
>Sounds like you are the one that has been bitten by the propaganda bug. Education is you antidote. Try it.
So ironic. What education have you received that you feel qualifies you to comment on this?
>Moron? Typical name calling response from somebody who can't articulate their thoughts.
Again ironic because I didn't even call you a moron. Unless you're admitting to complaining about environmental protestors causing pollution by travelling to protests? In which case, would you also have criticised civil rights protestors for harming race relations by annoying white people?
would stocking up on like 10 1gal water containers be a good idea for someone living in Washington? this seems like a disaster scenario rapidly approaching
It's discredited dogma because reality has conclusively proven that feeding your population well does NOT ensure it will grow. In the real world, the well-fed populations are the ones what have shown flatline and even negative growth. For multiple social reasons, it is in fact the populations subject to the greatest food insecurity that end up growing the fastest.
How could you look at data like this and come to the conclusion that feeding people "too well" is the source of population growth?
10 highest birthrates in 2019: Niger, Somalia, Congo, Mali, Chad, Angola, Burundi, Nigeria, Gambia, Burkina Faso
10 lowest birthrates in 2019: South Korea, Malta, Singapore, Ukraine, Spain, Bosnia, San Marino, Moldova, Italy, Andorra

Ecological suicide has felled many civilizations previously, and there is no reason to assume our course is markedly different in anything but scale and thoroughness.
It is the most plausible case for the Bronze age collapse, and the fabled "Sea Peoples" were most likely just the communities of the coastal plains, where poor people always congregate in their vulnerable multitudes then as now. It's cheap to build in the flood plains, and expensive to stay there. There are good reasons why the first settlers in a low region stake out the high ground.
We know people were afraid of what was happening, because they documented what led up to anticipated events, and took the time to bury their treasures in and around their homes, expecting to retrieve them later. What we take for invading armies today, were likely no more than an overwhelming tide of hopeless refugees.
I think a steady, ever increasing stream of migrants would reach all corners of the planet relatively quickly, especially if they're all driving cars.
Me too... They cleared out an entire forest just to make way for 3 massive amazon warehouses...

I mean I can see this in myself a little bit. I have a full time job, but I feel no desires to go out and socialize to make friends, take part in society where I currently live. What I do for fun is always at home, and I don't even like going out to get supplies for the things I do at home, I just can't afford delivery for everything.
The thing is, it's not like I naturally don't want that. I desperately do want that, which is why I always dream of having a tightknit community of people I can help and who I can enjoy being around. I feel like I'm a generally social person, but the environment I live in totally kills that for me.
I think that a lot of people unwittingly feel similar. People aren't really socially withdrawn, they're seeking alternative social spaces. Think about what people are really doing most of the time; If they're just at home playing single player games, watching TV, and ignoring messages, I'd say they're completely withdrawn. But they're not. Social media has a massive user base, people use things like discord a lot to just talk and be social, remotely. It has a whole host of problems in how it distorts perceptions and interactions, but ultimately that social media, and not solo based platforms, are the juggernaut shows that people *want* to be social. I think a large part of it is that the people stuck as Hikikomori/NEETs are surrounded by people they don't want to be around, and that those people are the ones in charge and have disparate influence on the environment.
Think about how much you would hate working at a place with an annoying junior coworker. And then about if it was an annoying boss. It doesn't take too many people to make a social space intolerable to most people, just that they have enough influence on it.
Nah fam, you're good, these pseudo sorry ass lockdowns didn't do anything to me neither. Besides, we could still go outside. We were not locked inside our home with police watching outside.
Now we know these tactikool arm chair preppers can't even stay inside if necessary lmao.
I would be genuinely surprised if climate change even breaks the top 100 reasons for social isolation.
Again, how does it? I know I could hit by a bus. That’s not a cheery thought. I still go outside, because something nkt being “cheery” is rarely If ever cause for the type of social isolation the person is discussing
Because that’s not the issue? Just because you’re panicked that there are more nonwhite people around you doesn’t mean that there is a link.
I dont know how about you but I am considering moving to iceland or some other safe island when I get money independent. If they really take Europe by storm, then I dont want to live in a place where refugees cant adapt to a different culture and its values
One thing I wonder about these studies is how they take in to account non in person social participation. For example I haven't been to a restaurant or bar in three years now but I have regular zoom sessions with friends all around the country and active group chats and constant snapchats going back and forth with people. Would I be considered someone that is extremely socially withdrawn?
Well at this rate it might not be that far off. I remember mass mink culling due to covid being able to jump from human to mink back in the early days.
The earth would be a Utopia without the cancer that is Humanity.
Some folks never experience ego death. Just look at proponents of ayahuasca like Joe Rogan. Some of the biggest narcissists you'll meet want to sit you down to talk about their ayahuasca trips. Hard to believe anyone who'd experienced ego death coming out the other side clinging to their narcissistic roots. To be clear that's not to say op is one. Just saying it's not universal. Mostly people see what they need to see. That's fine. Enjoy your own path. Let the trip flow.
Humans are faced with an immortal threat, Drones, machines with guns.
You cant win, younct resist, we can only obey or be exterminated.
You all the Matives of Earth have not tried thier best to resist yjis War Machine? Just humans with guns were enougj to colonize and industrialize the world. Machines win wars, not honor, not couarge, not huamnity.
If humans were truly won wars, Amwrica would jever have been colonized. Humans are slavws ro thier war machine, Civilozation divides humans to hate eachother theough genocide, and Conqured our lands after wards. One day the slave the next a master, back to a slave again. Rinse and repeat the bloodshed.
The only hope for life on Earth is of the Earth iself flood the world and destroys Civilozation, rewilding the Planet. Thats all tjat could stop this War Machine. Go off on a suicide mission, fight the machines, get mowed down down, lile weeds in a field. “Weed the people”. “In Guns we trust”.
The only real power is fire power, and the only way to beat that power is not with more fire, we need water.

You mean the athletes that never actually had covid. Only the vaccine. Crazy how that works.
Nazi Chatbots Fuck Off!
Enjoy your life while your still young enough to enjoy it.
Eventually the population of homeless in this country is going to become such a huge issue that it wont be able to be ignored any longer....thats when people will either wake up and work together to change it or the government will probably just start opening labor camps and poorhouse districts.
It won't be until the bell riots that any real change will happen.
It wasn’t random. It took billions of years. I’ve read the bible man, and the Quran, and Buddhist and Hindu literature. The story of Jesus happened before he came around. Look up Odin’s crucifixion for example. If it helps you live a more moral life, then that’s great. But we really shouldn’t lie to ourselves. This is your one and only shot, enjoy your life and do right, because there isn’t a cloud city afterwards. You are completely responsible for your own salvation, it’s harder than giving up to some mystery figure from antiquity, but it’s actually real. Here’s a quickly searched link to show you what I’m referring to with the Jesus story.

>Knowing that the Syrian refugee crisis almost caused irreversible damage into the EU
What damage ? Nothing happened. The amount of Syrian people that we admitted is so low we should be ashamed. And then to cry "they're taking our jobs / culture ..." is just... sad. The impact was minimal on real life and resources, the impact on hate speech and crazy politics well that is another thing ...
What will happen if the influx actually IS big enough to impact daily life ? We'll see...
Lifeboat ethics assumes a false dichotomy, that the only options are the pragmatic murder of millions (and pulling on the jackboots), or a naive submissive empathy that is crushed under the flood of the Faceless Foreign Hordes.
There's an enormous amount that can be done now, which would both soften the later crisis (it is, of course, too late to actually stop it) and would make the world better.
Though, thinking about it, lifeboat ethics are the true submission - to accepting as inevitable the bland descent into destroying life for a few more precious decades of hegemony. At least the strawman who opens the actually committed to their professed values (even knowing they will suffer the straw-pocalypse of all that extra manpower just eating all the food and stealing the women instead of becoming vital to mass infrastructure development).
European countries have higher standards of living because they have (and still are) looted ungodly amounts of wealth through colonialism, slavery and economic exploitation from the rest of the world for centuries.
I think we're pretty fucked either way, so turning people away based arbitrarily where they're birthed, and letting them die, or committing genocide to get what resources they had, is stupid and immoral. Particularly when the western imperial core they'll be migrating to are the main ones who caused this mess.
The ideal would be humanity uniting in these kinds of crises but there's a morbidly obese chance of that happening.
Caring about borders when the whole planet is going to starve is like seeing a tsunami coming for your village and going "No! You get out of my house right now!"Even though they're both going to be decimated. Even if your house was 20, 30 feet back or a couple feet higher (which is why your neighbor would be coming to try to survive a little longer)
I have two answers to that.
First, I think it is perfectly obvious that western countries have contributed to the suffering in middle east. We are the heavy polluters if you look at pollution/capita stats, and have been for a long time. Also, colonialism and imperialism have their share of problems, and our societies have been causing those issues. Our modern capitalism is also causing issues. I’m not saying that it is simple to see who is to blame, but I think it is clear that our societies have a share of the blame.
Secondly, even if there was no blame involved, would it matter? Their house burnt down, they need help, and you are better equipped to help than anyone around. I think we all have better chance at having a decent future if we make choices like that.
What will happen is you will begin to empathise heavily with your average Hans in 1940.
The fascists creep in, take root and infect. Before you know it, its too late. You were too busy going about your day to day life to fight back in the early stages. Now you just keep your head down and mouth shut as you watch humanity corrupt around you. Youll try to keep out of the way of the violence but before you know it.... youre a refugee too, as the states on the European border begin to collapse from the straing.
Fleeing to northern europe, you get to experience what your government did to other human beings while you simply turned away. You will watch through the wire of the cages as the people outside do the same, simply look away, as the black bag is brought over your head and you slip away into history.
You mean Europeans radicalized themselves into genocidal violence because they saw 2 more brown people than normal?
Just because the pollution has been outsourced doesn't mean they don't share responsibility for it. The West consumes a lot of goods produced in the East but isn't stuck with the pollution bill.
Some would say sociopaths and psychopaths are symptoms of the *modus operandi* of global capitalism and perhaps their existence as a distinct social class will also come into conflict (if or when the system collapses). The extremes of sociopaths and psychopaths may just as well find their life not worth living as much as the overly compassionate sympathetic people.
There is no doubt that harsh times are ahead, and it's not hard to imagine that people not within the extremes of the spectrum of personality that do survive won't support the systems of the past. That of capitalism, feudalism, and harsh authoritarianism through a state, because I don't believe that history will repeat itself. As the famous quote by Mark Twain goes, "History never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme." We may see a new system of control emerge relevant to the crisis but worthy to keep "hope" and compassion to weather it.
Of course I am just speculating, we could well revert to states that only survive through cruelty and fear like those of the past.
And on top of all this, even in the less developed parts of Europe, the food whether meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and processed foods are safer for consumption. I've noticed that food recalls are becoming more prevalent in the US in recent times.
"The fact alone that trans and bi people have more frequent long COVID tells me everything I need to know."
"These people are fucked in the head before COVID"
Well, what do you know based on this information? What does it mean to be "fucked in the head" anyhow?
There's no difference between brain damage and mental illness, okay.
Probably the steep rise in trans people represents a steep rise in some kind of pollution driven brain damage. There have been studies about drinking water being contaminated by hormonal birth control for a long time. It was making frogs hermaphrodites, remember? What do you suppose it does to humans?
Same thing for all the 'snowflake' millennials/gen z's with their sky-high anxiety and depression rates. Their brains are probably screwed up by the hundreds or thousands of chemicals building up in city water, wells, rivers and lakes, etc.
Anyone with mental illness before Covid seems to be getting Long Covid at much higher rates. Why? Because they already had brain damage. The mentally ill also have autoimmune diseases at higher rates. Systemic inflammation is found in people with anxiety and depression at higher rates. Schizophrenia rates are higher near shipping warehouses due to heavy diesel air pollution and researchers have long suspected that it is an autoimmune disease of the brain (their immune system is destroying brain tissue).
Wake up.
Long Covid is probably an autoimmune disease of the brain. There's shit tons of studies now that are show brain destruction and atrophy. The brain controls not just thoughts and emotions, but physical functioning of the body, like heartbeat, breathing, digestion.
I used to give links for this sort of thing, but increasingly I can't be bothered. I'm fucking tired, what with having this incurable, largely untreatable disease, that I'll probably die of relatively soon. Here. I'll give you one clue: Go to Youtube and search 'Akiko Iwasaki Long Covid' and you'll see Yale University research of brain scans showing the brain destruction. But seriously, this information is all over the internet! Just look!
If you wanted to know how bad shit is, you could. Just search and you'll find everything you need to know. Stop being in denial. There are reasons why society is falling the fuck apart. Find them and you might have a chance to do something to save yourself, just for a little while. Or at least once you understand the reality of our situation, and then you'll know how seriously you should be getting ready to meet God, or whatever.
Peace out.
I have two dogs, including a Doberman who is a total butthead no matter what I do with her. It is on ME to control my dogs, not the people around us.
That Jogger has every right to be irritated.
Panic is a reaction that is unsustainable over longer periods of time. The necessary hormones cannot be supplied endlessly and so on. Also, the human brain has a survival setting, that periodically tries to wrench us away from a certain mindset to make sure we don't run against walls.
Intellectually, I am panicking. Yet, I go outside every day and smile and get groceries, and mop the floor and so on.. That is what leads to my anxiety. I feel like all of us are seeing the king without clothes, but he doesn't wanna get dressed, and mentioning it doesn't help, so we all just acquiesce.
Ironically, the lack of creativity could be because of higher average co2 levels lowering average IQ. Our brains function best with clean air, but that just doesn't exist anymore.
The collapse of civilization is not necessarily the extinction of humanity.
"Enjoy your time" is good advice.
Lots of us also see this as a time where significant change is happening, and maybe amongst the changes there are things we can do to put our successors on a wiser course.
News on them is most likely being purposefully suppressed and for good reason.
Somewhere, there's probably a government agency on social engineering. They know the science of it. What science shows is that people are very prone to conform. If you see a bunch of McDonald's ads, you are more likely to buy from McDonald's because you perceive that it's what other people are doing. If you see more vote for X yard signs, than vote for Y yard signs, you are more likely to vote for X.
You won't think that's the reason. Your brain will reason backwards and come up for very sound logic why you voted for X. But it won't be the real reason. The true reason is that your brain did the math and saw that most people were voting for X and wanted you to be part of the majority. It's easier to be part of the majority.
Why does this matter in this case? Because if they promote news on attacks on infrastructure, other terrorist cells are going to perceive that's the popular thing now and instead of shooting up a mall, will blow up a power station.
If your job is to minimize social chaos on a national scale, a mall shooting isn't that bad. 20-50 people die, you catch the terrorist(s) who did it. Yeah it sucks, but it's an acceptable trade-off to get them locked away. So you want the news to blow those up, you want every terrorists first thought when making a plan to be shoot up a place. To think that's what every other terrorist does.
Attacks on infrastructure on the other hand are a lot more of an issue. They can easily cost millions of dollars and weeks to fix. Plus the perpetrators may not be caught quickly (if at all). You don't want that. So you minimize infrastructure attacks, you tell the news not to talk about them, you say it wasn't a terrorist attack but something else (a weird robbery for example).
Which is why the mainstream media keeps pushing for more migration and multiculturalism. A sustainable society doesn't want loads of extra people consuming resources and has a deep sense of roots and long term management of where they live.
It's an economic culling that has been going on for decades now. The problem is that those who should see the truth don't or are simply in denial. It's a game for them, literal reality shows that they sit back and watch on the news. And now they are changing the rules even more to fit their interests.
Social media is just their way of distracting you, especially sites like TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
The Hunger Games are real.
Go big or go home...
Please feel free to rip apart the claims on their merit if you feel they're baseless.
I have yet to hear complaints of an overabundance of qualified plumbers haunting the streets attempting to push their wares on passerby. Find me one that will work for $15 an hour and I assure you I can find them endless amounts of work until they're sick with the deluge of phone calls and are forced to push their hourly rates back up to $25+ so other plumbers stop calling trying to subcontract them out at market price.
With my basic understanding of electricity, competence with a tape measure, and ability to arrive at a job site sober when I am on a construction site doing equipment installs foremen regularly attempt to hire me as an electrician's assistant on the spot no questions asked. It's not my path but I hear the rule of thumb is that you can go to school for 4-6 years to become an EE or spend the same amount of time as an electrician's assistant to become a licensed electrician and end up making the same amount of money. However, the licensed electricians aren't at the same level of risk of being replaced by software.
Yes, by design.
Federal debt isn't the same as personal debt. Federal debt is the difference between the budgeted expenses and budgeted tax income - not a loan. So if the government plans to spend 6 trillion dollars but only estimates tax revenue of 5 trillion, the debt is 1 trillion.
But that money isn't owed to anyone. Moreover, the federal government creates and controls the currency, so it could simply print money to fulfill that "debt" (but that has ramifications for inflation which I won't get into). Basically, federal debt is made up.
But one day some representatives realized, wait a minute. Americans are too stupid to understand all this. They think it's just like their *own* debts. We can use that to our advantage to play political theater! So they created an artificial "debt ceiling." A sort of self-imposed suicide button they can press that will artificially cause the country to "default." The point of this button is simply to hover their finger over it every year and pretend like this time they're *reallllly* going to do it, you better pay attention to them!

>Do energy companies (monopoly) have a product that's not in demand?
Yes, they do, and that's my point. Their products are in demand so they can price gouge. They could choose to be nice and not price gouge, but they don't have a lot of incentive to do that, at least not in the short term. The only market solution for high prices, therefore, is to reduce demand. The non-market solution would be for the government to force companies to lower their prices, without lowering wages or laying off workers, but that would be very unpopular. It would mean lower profits, which would piss off shareholders. Now, you probably don't care if shareholders are upset, I don't care either, but they have a lot more power and influence than you and me.
good for you to know how the future will evolve, although I personally think it will not. A collapse, as the word says, is an abrupt ending of something structural, now you can go on and redefine definitions, all fine, but I have no time for your new inventions
women are a slight majority
if their needs are not met the basic needs of most of the population are NOT met
The oldest professions are likely shaman and storyteller, right? That seems to be the latest consensus on the topic, since having sex for money is kind of hard to do when there isn't money, and we had stories and spirituality for thousands of years predating that. Morale is important to a community, and I would submit that knowing how to keep yourself and others entertained is an important ability if you have any talent for it. There's a story in the book *Poor Economics* about a Moroccan man who was going hungry, even though he was paying for a satellite TV dish. When asked about it, he said (paraphrasing) "There is no work in this town and I live by myself. If I don't eat enough I can still live, but if I don't have TV, I will die." In the trenches of WWI and parts of WWII, there are stories of soldiers who would throw over things like harmonicas to the other side if one of the enemy troops had a good singing voice. We're blasted with content at all hours these days so it's hard to even imagine something like what to do when it's too cold to go outside and there isn't anything to do inside. If you know some good stories, songs, or dances, you'll be able to fulfill a vital role that prepping types almost universally overlook.
Of course, I say that partially just to present a different way of approaching the issue. I agree with most of the posts about self-sufficiency, or what I call squatting skills: carpentry, plumbing, how to stay warm in the winter, basic electrical work, that kind of thing. Hell, those are skills that an average person should have in a non-collapsing society! And I agree with the posts that community organization skills like conflict de-escalation and conflict resolution are important, and one should seek those out in the context of a local community group that's aware of collapse. But when it comes down to it, morale can be the difference between eating and not eating.
We are struggling to handle refugee crisis as it is, imagine what is going to happen when this starts to happen in mass
I wish there were some form of aid set up with college offices for student housing. Is the college ignoring the students’ plight? I would happily let a smart, conscientious student with no money for housing live here rent free with us (location: Ohio).
Edit: with 2 bunk beds, I’d host 4! I’d make them eat my terrible cooking though.
Yep some people move and some people stay for their own reasons. You do you and I'll carry on.
Good luck convincing them of that. They'll probably just decide that it's easier to kill the men, take all their shit, & either exile or enslave the women & kids.
Honestly. Europe is going anti immigrant. I think in 10 to 20 years time refugees will be shot at the borders and we (not you and me but the collective “we”) will cheer it on.
We don’t want Canada for the Canadians.
Fucking beautifully said. You are my reddit hero of the day!

I understand how difficult insurgencies are to fight for even our own hyper-funded military, but exactly how many of our civilians have even the slightest of anti-air or anti armor capabilities?
at least the taliban had RPG-7’s, mounted anti-air craft guns, a metric fuckton of automatic rifles and machine guns, religious extremists willing to run suicide bombing missions, and not to mention the home team advantage where expeditionary operations are almost impossibly resource and logistics-heavy.
>And the hundreds of boats of starving people that will start getting thru defences and rocking up on our shores
More meat for the crocs and great whites.
That’s actually fair. I used to be a libertarian but have re-thought about it. Now I’m kinda scared off too much government, and not enough.
I do still have fantasies about living in a very small population libertarian society though
how about religions just shut up, all of em
In the top video the narrator says that the horde was chanting to end Congress but they are actually chanting "Lula, ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão", which rhymes in Portuguese but in English translates kind of as "Lula, you thief, your place is in prison".
The next congress that will take hold in a month is actually comfortable for Bolsonarists and a potential problem for Lula. IIRC Bolsonaro's party elected the largest number of representatives and senators. It's not simple to calculate majorities like in the US, though, as here we have a poli-party system. Here a link with a map of the next senate to give an idea, green dots are from Bolsonaro's party and red dots are from Lula's - https://www12.senado.leg.br/noticias/materias/2022/10/31/bancadas-do-senado-estarao-mais-concentradas-em-2023

Oh yeah, just like I learned in college: serious discussions don't involve questions. Just think what your betters (known liars all) tell you to think. /s
You must be a big fan of authoritarianism. All I see is too-online idiots using a few bad examples to run the entire country off a cliff while disallowing discussion.
I don't buy that. I have an older pickup that's like half the size of what you're describing: its basic as can be, there's nothing even behind the front seats. It gets the job done for hauling heavy loads. I live in a rural area, I have to drive on gravel and dirt roads. People by and large do not need monster truck pickups nor giant SUVs.
People don’t need these "big thing" excesses in general. I lived through the era of tiny flip-phones: everyone was fine. No one died because they didn’t have a gigantic 6 inch slab with 5 camera lenses and bloated, battery sapping software.
You only think you need the bigger thing because marketing & peer pressure is a mind virus that ruins your brain. Granted its getting really hard to get a small, simple pickup or a small, simple, long lasting anything these days so that’s another part of the problem.
You are correct about reactions, but part of the denial is due to knee-jerk emotional responses. Also many hostile reactions are based on sociopolitical educations with little experience of basic ecological science. Overshoot is mainly a scientific observation and not a political position (and certainly not an "ecofascist"one.)
As you pointed out, the last time humanity depended on the resources of their local ecosystems for survival (just over a century ago) the global population was much less than 2 billion; now we are at 8 billion and looking at 10 billion by 2050. The massive expansion of the population in such a short time is primarily due to the presence of cheap fossil fuels at every stage of global agriculture, including tillage, irrigation, fertilizer, harvest, processing and worldwide distribution. There is no sustainable replacement waiting to deploy at the scale required; the moment the flow of cheap fossil fuels is cut off (whether due to war, peak oil or in response to climate change), billions will starve.
But right now six out of every eight people alive are here only due to the intervention of cheap fossil fuels in agriculture. No one wants to hear that they are also part of the problem when there are so many wealthy individuals and corporations taking so much for themselves. There is truly vast inequity and the capitalist system (propped up by this same flow of cheap fossil fuels) has created a huge hierarchy of elites defended by militaries and law enforcement, all exacerbated by continuing colonialism and racism.
These are multiple injustices that cry out for reckoning, yet that fact has little bearing on the fact than an unsustainable population is ALSO consuming every natural resource in sight, and causing a devastating mass species extinction in every ecosystem on earth. BOTH environmental overshoot and unjust overconsumption are existential problems currently staved off only by the ongoing interjection of cheap fossil fuels.

the rationalizations of childish minds are truly a thing top behold. No. The global north sits square at the center of the culture of destruction. The average American consumes resources at a rate far and above anyone on the planet. The Anglo- American oil cartel laid the foundation for the addiction to fossil fuels that rape the planet.
The true denialists, the biggest snowflakes.... Americans. What a bunch of willfully ignorant, selfish punks.
I don't know about the rest of the guys but I heard a polish offset of XR are bunch of fucking weak ass pussies and cowards. Those idiots even consider casual swearing as a type of some kind of "violence".
I deeply detest pacifism in so called revolutionary movements. I believe we should put bourgeoisie' heads on a ***** ** ****** ****** and still that would be a light way to deal with them. Harmless activity my ass. Who in sane state of mind would want to deal with mass murderers and psychopaths in a non-violent way? Yea, um Sally and Jimmy, good luck with that.
Reminds me of the "why don't kids go outside anymore?" "outside: (picture of concrete jungle)"
I remember when this book came out in ‘68. What a massive global stir it caused. He might of got it wrong but one of the reasons he got it wrong was because of the profound impact his book had in getting scientists and governments to act to research and implement new technologies
I mean I agree that this is a naive question because it would need a mindset change of everyone. It wasn't really meant that seriously.
However, if it would be possible the solution is not that difficult. Go vegan, no personal cars, no personal flights, no new building we don't need them, and stop building things that break after two years it's easy to build a smartphone that hold in for twenty years for example. . We can feed, shelter and give community and medicine to every single one of the 8 billion with 10% of the resource and energy consumption.
So while the mindset change is near impossible, the things we should do are pretty clear.
That would be graet if I could go out in a blaze of glory, but a slow slide down into poor health, poverty and despair is not my idea of getting to see what happens. I'm already in the poor health stage, next comes the poverty.
I had someone point this out, in response to my frustration at having adapted but, still being pretty upset because the isolation has been pretty rough: but my god, it was something else to have somebody go, “Oh, see, so you might as well have just let her rip” WHILE I feel like incredibly boiled ass. Like, uh, no? I’m DEFINITELY not looking to give this shit more opportunities to fuck me up- and my family got a comparatively mild case: about a week of hell headache, fever and wheezing. I got the terrifying brain stem slam and puke: but, though I was worried about encephalitis, it doesn’t appear to have happened. I’ve been pretty scared that like most illnesses, it probably would be hell on wheels because I have MS: but, so far, no lesion activity: couple what they call “psuedo flairs” but though they suck ass, doesn’t appear to be pushing progression for me. But…people are so ate up-
Like, first off, fuck no I am not *letting her rip* so I can *keep* catching it- but, the idea of giving it to anybody that might get it *worse* isn’t something I am personally okay with “normalizing”.
I had people jump on my ass like I give a flying shit what they do- I gotta go to the feed store for my chickens here and there: but, it’s like, look, I don’t wish this shit on anybody, I truly don’t but, no. I don’t care anymore about what idiots do. I can’t: wear a mask or don’t, shots or not, I can’t care anymore but leave me the fuck alone- but, my catching this garbage is hardly a “Ah ha!” Gotcha. It’s just one more fucking thing to be more or less impotently angry over- but, these symptoms are decidedly not something I care to experience again, so, no, I won’t let er rip.
Maybe eventually it’ll eat my brains away and I will be stupid and self destructive enough for that: but good lord most of these people don’t need COVID’s help being bone dead stupid.
(Sorry, I got ranty: but goddamn this is a complete shit show. Lol)
Yeah. This whole package of ideologies consists of many different "truths" that are mostly misunderstandings and plain wrong "facts". About the human nature, a social darwinism, inescapable capitalism and so on.
I think that's the most frustrating thing about this collapse. There are alternatives but they just don't get any attention at all, because it would mean to change the system.
The funny thing is that this system will fall no matter what. So if it's "thinkable" or not it will nevertheless. Willingly or by external force.
> no matter what people do or try to do
Are they actually doing anything though?
I had to run to Lowe's for a new sump because mine couldn't handle the melting snows of the '22 blizzard. Not only was I the only one wearing a mask in that entire store, people were downright assholes to me for wearing one. One guy even yelled at me "Woke piece of shit!" in the parking lot.
People aren't doing ***anything*** about this. We're doomed and we deserve it.
When you ask god for an Ark, but all he sends is an Arkstorm
We asked my wife's best friend how are things in Arizona with all the news about the water and the aquifers and she was like "Oh, that'll get fixed, no one cares."
You are assuming that all mentally ill people are dangerous which statistics show that mentally ill people are more likely to be the victim of violence than the perpetrator. Also forcing medical compliance is the perfect storm that’s ripe for corruption and abuse. The anti psychotic medication they give to people who are bi polar and schizophrenic leads to an increase in cognitive decline along with liver failure. I’ve heard from people who have bi polar saying the medicine is poison and I ignored their claim because of their mental illness. It was only within the last few years I started looking into these medicines and the side effects along with the ingredients only to find out that they are right! It is poison. I believe within the last year it was time magazine that finally disclosed that anti depressants don’t actually work. So the model you gave of throwing them in a locked facility and forcing drug compliance is inhumane. It’s essentially here take these poisonous pills so we can medicate you into normal never mind the long term effects the individual will be suffering and inevitably end up dying from.
Beautiful story and so glad you made it out. Very humbling of you remember what it was like to be on the other side. I appreciate people like you a lot. You stay safe as well and best of luck.
> . Way, way back in May of 2022, we broke a 78-year-old record. The weather agency says it was a temperature of 32.1 C:
And don't forget the derecho that assblasted the region immediately after!
I used to live near Kensington Market in Toronto. It was expensive then, and I don’t want to think about how expensive it is now.
Thank you to the Mods for a great sub. Happy new year to everyone. Please be diligent and thoughtful towards newcomers as we all continue to move towards collapse.
You should not be worried enough to let you enjoy your present, and worried enough to be responsible for the future.
I’ve got this theory that we have two incredibly huge populations that are two sides of the same coin: they’re going to wind up seeing us censored into being an even dumber society than we already are but, neither side particularly has much in the way of self-accountability or responsibility and the only thing they ever seem to agree on is how we’re all gonna be controlled.
All the while, not controlling themselves at all, which…tends to make it much easier that little self-fulfilling prophecy to occur.
Perhaps if this guy and people like them could refrain from interjecting the verbal equivalent of a political wet fart into literally *every* conversation: perhaps it wouldn’t be necessary for mods to say, “Now, now, let’s use our nice words.” But, eh.
Maybe because our healthcare system is for profit and health insurance is a direct obstacle to creating and promoting a healthy society.
Why does some fucking loser insurance agent get to decided what you need and don’t need when dealing with medical issues?
No hate or anything, but it's not normal to get an MRI to diagnose a concussion. You can diagnose a concussion through maybe five minutes of questions and looking at someone's eyes.
Why nail your brain with radiation and drop 5K for something easily diagnosed like that?
Sad but not surprising. The world is ugly. There's not much to look forward to or even enjoy in the moment. I don't partake because it won't improve my material conditions, but you can't blame people. It's just sad they're dying. I also wonder what's going on with more and more of these fentanyl ODs. Not to be a conspiracy nut, but are people who partake recreationally being punished? And are they becoming a statistic as a result?
After the atmospheric river came through, I saw the news trying to positively spin the fiasco by saying the snowmelt will refill the water sources. Is this true? Even if it is it seemed like a non-permanent solution at best.
If you knew the science you'd be even more worried. Enjoy your family and friends, be kind to yourself.
It’s natural selection. The people who are willing to kill you in your sleep for your shit get all the shit. Being nice as a group has benefit, but so does eating all the dumb nice people.
Same with capitalism. The little mom and pop shop that is content serving it’s small community will never stand up against a soulless behemoth like McDonald’s. Natural selection says give the most stuff to the most people at the least price. It is advantageous to abuse your workers, and be unsustainable. Consequences aren’t a factor; literally the only question is how cheap can you make my hamburger?
It’s not. It’s in West Asia, which is a slightly larger area that, by sheer, cosmic coincidence, also includes the Middle East. But Kuwait isn’t in the Middle East, unlike the country right next to it, Saudi Arabia. It’s just a bit to the east of that in a region more generally called West Asia.
This is called a ‘synechdoche’. Like, when Americans *say* they’re from America, they really mean ‘the United States’. It’s really very simple. I don’t understand what is your problem.
Fully support your remark on the point of doing what we're doing for a job.
We all could use this moment to both reflect on collapse and what we want to achieve in our one life. Right now, smart people are working in the fossil fuels industry, junk food industry or advertising industry just because someone offered them a job there. They didn't consider anything but the career opportunity. Many of them could equally work in sustainable agriculture or environment preservation or cottage industries, but they didn't think to search those jobs out. This is the moment to go big-picture and choose wisely.
This is all well and good but I think the most powerful adversary is simple complacency. The "oh, it's not SO bad" notion, often weaponised by the rich to sap the initiative of those who would effect the necessary change, I think that is the greatest enemy of reform and revolution.

No. That is your lack of reading skills with unfounded implicit assumptions.
I am not an eco-fascist because i am not advocating to completely halt immigration or to genocide people lmao! I am living in a country with 514 people per square km. Mass migration is creating huge shortage in housing, shortage in drinkable water supply, shortage of energy, traffic jamsa and nitrogen emissions which has stopped building of housing and reduce traffic speeds as well. if you live in Canada with 4 people per square km or any other lower density country you will not understand where i am coming from. In one of the most densely populated areas in this world it is justified to be concerned about overpopulation. Saying i want to remove every foreigner or kill any minority is such a vile accusation. I said i want to stop illegal mass migration, i did not say i want to kill them all like some nazi. If i am a fascist because i want sustainable migration, a sustainable society and environment than it's a complete devaluation of the word fascist which i cannot take serious anymore and that is exactly what you don't want!
Oh fuck off. Can we PLEASE just focus on finding a solution for the climate crisis?? Enough of this “no not that way because of this other completely unrelated issue” bullshit. There is no magic pill. Fixing climate change comes at a cost, I dont give a fuck if the solution makes someone rich, or makes it inconvenient for people to travel 50+ miles a day for their goddamn commute, or god forbid it gives one country an advantage over another. Just shut the fuck up and IMPLEMENT SOMETHING
Go for a walk. Talk to strangers. Volunteer at a charity. Meet your neighbors.
Things seemed about normal this year. At the family gathering my sister celebrated by chugging a bottle of wine and ranting about taxes for an hour. My brother told her to reduce her expenses by finding a boyfriend, but she would have to be willing to “get down on her knees”. My boomer mom almost ripped the arms off her rocking chair having the self control to calmly explain that things were even harder for her at that age. We all took a nice photo for Facebook and politely told each other to fuck off until next year. If that’s not Christmas spirit, what is?
If shtf, there won't be anyone to pay them or anything of value to pay them with. They'll either stay on the "job" to steal shit from the gullible, go protect their own families, or both. Nothing they do after is going to be in your interest or for your benefit.
I can't even fault them for it.
I think America's problem is also mental health itself. An absolutely normal person can walk into a psych's office, be 100% honest with them, and walk out with a diagnosis of something. We literally label everything now.
Than there's the spector of involuntary commitment. I've witnessed many people get committed for the most ignorant of reasons, and I've also witnessed people walk out the door that definitely should have been committed. Literally had a guy say he wanted to shoot his family, and he walked. But a girl simply telling her boyfriend "I bet you'd be happy if I was dead" got her a psychiatric hold. Know what the difference between the two was though? The guy didn't have insurance, but the girl did.
Brilliant work, as always, Mr. Dowd. I always enjoy your videos. I have absolutely no problem with you repeating such powerful quotes, even if I’m a seasoned post-doomer by now. You really don’t have to justify reusing your material, as it really does stand as firmly as it can get.

This is a really dumb and shortsighted take. You're being ignorant and if something does ever happen, you'll simply be a burden on others. Are you going to sit in the corner of a room till you die of hypothermia or dehydration? No, you'll probably beg daddy government or steal from others.
lol we live in a world of a million wastes and an actually useful item is what you are raging against? Not low wages or ridiculous food/housing costs, not ridiculous car maintenance costs, or the thousand other things we regularly get gouged on. No ignore all that so you can make some stupid ass anti gun point.

I guess we're all just suppose to eat rice for every meal for weeks. The nutritional value is ungodly. You're a muppet.
Umm I actually do care about my neighbors. I help out every few months at our local food pantry. When we lost power for a couple of nights because of the Santa Ana winds I checked on my elderly neighbors. Someone else in the community came and took down a dangerous tree branch that had snapped.
I do a lot within my power to help those around me. But I also make sure I am prepared as much as I can be. And I help others when time permits. I have taught a few younger family members to knit. I am helping my sister start a garden in her back yard. I have given away seeds among other things to neighbors so they can start their own gardens.
I make sure that I am up to date on vaccines, and my red cross training etc etc….
I don’t “need” Jesus… although thanks for throwing that out there. You sound like quite a peach…
> because in a way we will probably see how protracted and painful this is with the Russia-Ukraine war and Putin's inner circle.
putin's inner circle are known as siloviki, or the "security men." if they get rid of him the next person will be even crazier, more nationalistic, and under pressure to conclude the war using any means necessary.
there are no "liberals" yearning to be free inside the russian apparatus
That is a good plan. No hurricanes here but we get tornadoes and winter storms so my provisions base around that, I do something similar. Luckily there is enough time between that I can use some of them in between seasons so it is not just money sitting there for the more perishable things. Another pro tip is to add a bit of candy. I don’t really eat sweet stuff, but the mood uplifting effect of sugar is real. In an emergency, it is calorie dense and can be a nice little treat which does wonders for your mental state!
Take care friend!
Sounds like you're having a problem understanding the difference between fantasy and reality. Just because you can imagine something, doesn't make it viable.
FWIW... some of us are permies.
Regardless, I have children in my family; my purpose is to help them survive as best I can. I don't find dwelling on the "math of doom" useful. If we're going to die anyway... well, no one gets out of this life alive anyway, do they? So why lie down and surrender to fate? I'm not an algorithm, I'm an animal: animals try to survive. I know embracing the inevitability of our doom is a prevailing perspective, hereabouts, but personally? I'd rather die while trying to help my family survive, trying to heal some corner of the world, than... what? Settle in a rocking chair, "Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday" playing on the stereo, while I take my government-issue dose of Quietus™?
I get that we're doomed. I'm just going to pretend that we're not, because I think that is more dignified. Kierkegaard would call this the Knight of Resignation, rather than the -- in his view, existentially superior -- Knight of Faith.
"Go now and die in what way seems best to you..."
Nope disagree its exactly the same skill set , you definitely need more critical mass for something like that but at the local county level there's like 10 of us but we're making changes against entrenched interests and bias but we carry on some parents still fighting an active case at the same time, figuring out how to create legislation and get it sponsored translates incredibly well to almost any issue like I said there's people after you and people before you're not alone , developing that critical mass through community organizing also translates well just because you face a stronger opponent doesn't mean they are different skill sets

It's not known WHO attacked the substations yet. Bored kids? An animal? Actual terrorists?
Besides, the definitions of "criminal" and "terrorist" are always constructed, so what's it matter anyway? George Washington was literally a criminal and terrorist to the British Crown, yet Americans define him as a freedom fighter.

It doesn't render previous immunity useless, only vax immunity as it only contains the spike protein. Natural immunity is more robust, even a previous SARS-CoV-1 infection a decade ago protects significantly against SARS-CoV-2. Some studies even show that a recent coronavirus infection is also protective and can be the reason why the outcome of an infection can vary a lot in similar people.
Protect it by making it a criminal offense to associate with a fascistic terrorist party, AKA the GOP.
MAGA came about due to Obama’s terms. It’s not like they appeared out of nowhere. It’s been brewing for years.
The source is the mainstream GOP
Stop with presenting obvious facts as though you're smarter than me and talk like a human. You know another disaster, topsoil depletion. Wanna know what ties it all together, the inability of civilization to capture ever greater energy gradients for use. If our soil can't grow food and we fuck up solar engineering and now have a blacked out atmosphere its over as well.
The democrats taking over the government and purging the GOP is, in fact, a hypothetical situation. I never argued either way for it. I’m only correcting blatant political illiteracy.
Historical cases of left wing totalitarianism does not mean fascism is not a rightwing ideology.
An armed mob seizing an autonomous commune is not anarchism. Please read.
The commissar gets shot at or otherwise told to fuck off. Maybe we die for it. Maybe we don’t. More hypotheticals.
What kind of shit cunt does this on Christmas. Isn't the US having massive snow storms right now too?
Yep I live near you and lost power all day Friday during the worst of it. I sat in my kitchen and ran my gas burners on and off just trying to keep a little warm. (I have carbon monoxide detectors and rotated the burners.) but it really got me thinking about collapse in general sitting there for hours. It’s really scary.

Imagine thinking it would’ve been possible to get every single person on earth to isolate for the same extended amount of time. It’s not humanly possible nor sustainable physically or mentally, and you don’t know anyone’s personal/at-home situations.
lol I don't know about the schizo capital letters but i think that person is referring to the fact that the worst of climate change will affect populations of people in the global south first, before it starts to trickle up to more wealthy--ostensibly wealthy--places like the US
so people in the US and so-called first world nations will be able to ignore climate change for a slightly longer period of time and keep up business as usual
NDP of the past were pro worker and pro economy. This was before the sjws took over and made it an oppression Olympics party.
Please reread my comment directly above. I have grown food sir. Also, growing GOOD Weed is not easy. Not as hard as Mushrooms, but it takes some learning. Thats how I know you have no idea what you are talking about, with all due respect. Humans have been Farming for centuries after all. I think by "bunker" you are picturing some little space out in the back yard or something. No, I'm talking about old missile silos and other structures that are 10+ stories deep. Theres enough room for several families in most of them. If my broke Pot Head friends can figure out how to grow indoors, I' m sure the ultra wealthy will find somebody to figure it out. Again, Googles your friend bruh. Merry Christmas.

Bullshit that the United States is about to experience temperatures above seasonal averages immediately after we are facing record lows? Because that is happening.
Areas that are about to hit 60F that were just -20F. Then the hots get hotter due to, you know, SUMMER TIME but first the colds will get colder.
It sounds like you just want to bury your head in the sand and that is fine. Don’t attack me at the same time. Just bury your head.
Syphilis starts very mild. More mild than Covid, but in its final stage (tertiary syphilis) it causes organ damage, neurological, hearing and vision damage. Of course, we also know that end stage syphilis often leads to psychosis.
What's interesting is that Covid causes those sorts of symptoms and damage in a significant portion of people almost immediately. Those are the people with Long Covid that you keep hearing about.
Estimates of Long Covid prevalence were 20% not that long ago. (Like 6 months ago or so). Lately estimates are 40%. Do we know that 60 or 80 or even 100% of people who got Covid, won't also end up getting Long Covid eventually? No. No we don't.
Here's how syphilis progresses:
First stage: 3-6 weeks after infection. A firm, round, painless sore in the area of exposure, often not even noticed. The sore heals and disappears, without any treatment. Unless you're quite alert and observant you won't realize you have the disease, and you'll fail to get treatment that would prevent it from progressing to the next stage.
Second stage: A rash appears somewhere on the body, perhaps somewhere you can't see like your back or the bottom of your feet. The rash does not itch and can be faint and hard to see. This happens after the sore heals. It could appear immediately or several weeks later.
Latent stage: The disease becomes asymptomatic, possibly for many years.
Third stage (Tertiary syphilis): Here's what happens many years or even decades later, if you're unlucky...
*Tertiary Stage*
*Most people with untreated syphilis do not develop tertiary syphilis. However, when it does happen, it can affect many different organ systems. These include the heart and blood vessels, and the brain and nervous system. Tertiary syphilis is very serious and would occur 10–30 years after your infection began. In tertiary syphilis, the disease damages your internal organs and can result in death. A healthcare provider can usually diagnose tertiary syphilis with the help of multiple tests.*
*Neurosyphilis, Ocular Syphilis, and Otosyphilis*
*Without treatment, syphilis can spread to the brain and nervous system (neurosyphilis), the eye (ocular syphilis), or the ear (otosyphilis). This can happen during any of the stages described above.*
*Signs and symptoms of neurosyphilis can include:*
*severe headache;*

You can go over to r/covidlonghaulers and read about how they have the exact same symptoms as neurosyphilis, changes to vision like 'visual snow' and to hearing like tinnitus, along with dizziness and vertigo. Many are also having symptoms of psychosis, like dissociation, derealization, hallucinations, etc.
Covid is not being overblown. It is being downplayed for as long as possible. Pretty soon, you will see society fall apart even more than it already is, because downplaying a problem results in failing to deal with it. The longer we don't deal with problems, the worse they will get, and the less able to do anything about it we will become. Because we are becoming weaker and weaker over time.
I suggest you bite the bullet and do something to protect yourself. No one else is going to do it for you.
Really? stupidest comment of the day.
You need to know when water freezes for driving and travelling.
Most families have a hard time drumming up conversation on a good day-- one which doesn't entail some derogatory comments about the choices people have made in their lives. Losing your shit is just being truthful--unfortunately people don't want truthful-- they want 'the Christmas spirit'/ which is dead. It's too much in their face. They don't want to see it. The fact that we're all on r/collapse on Xmas Day should give you comfort. There's enough people who still see through all the garbage.
Nah. Take a walk in the park. If you see a guy fishing. Ask him if he’s caught anything. If you see a guy doing a cool thing, ask him about it. Go to a bar. If you see a guy with a college logo, talk to him about his college. If you see guys watching a sports game, ask them who they’re rooting for. Make the conversation short, specific, and friendly “hey, is this good fishing? What have you caught? Ok. Thanks for letting me know man. Good luck.” Then leave.
There are some people who don’t want to talk to you. Most are actually pretty chill, especially if you’re talking about something they’re interested in and they’re not super busy. Don’t ask the guys celebrating a wedding.
Ok. I’m on a plane rn. About to take off. The guy next to me is with his family. They’re talking rn. So I’m not going to interrupt. A half hour or so, when everyone is just chilling, I’m going to talk to him. Make small talk. Ask him where he’s headed. Is he going home or visiting someone? He has a baby so I’ll congratulate him and stuff.
These low stakes situations are great for building social skill. If he tells me to fuck off, that’s fine. No skin off my back. I will literally never see him again. He probably won’t and it helps me get over my crushing anxiety talking to people.
When you’re ready to make friends, go do things irl. Volunteer organizations are great. Church (if you’re religious), a workplace, interest groups (hiking, sports etc). Then you meet these people regularly, have a preset thing to talk about pretty much all the time, and then you can befriend them.
Going from 0 to 1 is huge. Once you get one friend, you can tap into their social networks. Then you go from there.
It’s hard, it sucks, it’s scary, and it takes a lot of time, but it’s doable.
You’re fucking delusional if you think every member of the largest generation in US history are all the same. Some people in every age group suck.
