Smart technology/smart homesThis felt like the right place for this. I’m currently housesitting for a friend’s family as I sometimes do, and every time I come here I notice this issue more. I can only assume they’re a reflection of most middle-class families in America, and maybe even have less smart technology than average.
These people’s home is totally wired with tech: several Alexas that control the lights and TV; a smart TV; security cameras; a wifi-enabled thermostat and washer and dryer; a digital lock on the door; even a faucet that tells them the temperature of the water.
One time when I was here, I did a load of laundry (dog had soiled the bed) and got a text from the family asking why I was doing laundry—this is how I found out the machines were wifi-enabled. I was like, how the hell did they know I did laundry? It was creepy.
I’m a zillennial... I grew up with dial-up internet, and didn’t have a smartphone until I was a senior in high school. I only just made peace with my smartphone, after going through a phase of returning to a flip phone. It’s personally worried me, even if I don’t see the end goal of it (help or harm?), to see just how pervasive this glut of smart technology has been, enticing my Gen X parents more than anyone. Even people who I thought would never do it have gotten smart watches, which record a startling quantity of data on the user.
I drive, and will probably always drive, a car from the 90s because it doesn’t have a screen. I have a mechanical washing machine that I hope never craps out. I still watch TV on a giant projection CRT… I feel like I’m one of the few people my age who resists this onslaught of new technology, and I don’t say that to feel special: I actually wish I could just sit back and enjoy it like everyone else, and I try to an extent. But I hate that I see the collapse behind all this.
When I come to this house, I unplug the Alexa because I find it creepy. On the screen of one of them, it shows you news and suggests you try “making stories” with what I assume is some form of ChatGPT. This feature is aimed at children, which creeps me the fuck out.
Why does everything have to have a chip in it? Why can’t we just live with normal appliances? It’s like the people who have these things don’t see the unsustainability of it all: all these devices having logic boards requires the mining of rare earth metals and massive manufacturing processes. At a certain point, how will it continue? Not to mention that the manufacturers of this technology are increasingly consolidated into a few corporations.

Climate Change Is Stuck In A Catch-22So, scientists continue to act like the World still has time to prevent Collapse due to Climate Change.
Just today, scientists released their last "final warming" regarding Climate Change. So, the Global Warming has already raised temperatures by 1.2C since 1900 (7). Scientists claim that the World can still keep Global Warming from passing 1.5C (1). Exceeding 1.5C would trigger several Tipping Points (2). These Tipping Points include: Greenland Ice Sheet Collapse, West Antarctic Ice Sheet Collapse, Low-latitude Coral Reefs dieoff, Boreal Permafrost abrupt thaw, and Barents Sea Ice abrupt loss (3). These Tipping Points are just the ones that would be triggered if Global Warming rose by only 1.5C and didn't continue rising. There are many additional Tipping Points that would be triggered at 2C, 2.5C, 3C, etc.
Well, when scientists says that the World still has time, they are lying. Scientists are completely ignoring how smog interacts with global temperatures.
If we abruptly stopped using using fossil fuels, Global Warming would dramatically increase by 0.5-1.1C within a month (4). See, when oil is burned, it produces smog and CO2. Smog stays in the atmosphere for only a few days (5). However, CO2 stays in the atmosphere for 300-1,000 years (6). So, if we abruptly stopped using fossil fuels, smog would disappear from the atmosphere within a month, but the CO2 would stay for 300-1,000 years. So, Global Warming would rise by 1.7C-2.3C within a month.
So, humanity is stuck in a Catch-22. If we tried to stop Climate Change from triggering Tipping Points at 1.5C, emissions would have to be stopped as soon as possible. But, stopping emissions would remove smog from the atmosphere, and Global Warming would dramatically raise temperatures by 0.5-1.1C within a month! So, humanity is basically screwed!
Chaos and riots will happen eventually, the only question is when. The UN predicts that there will be 1.2 Billion refugees by 2050 (8).
The only question is will the world collapse before 2050???

What hypothetical event (events) will change your mind about the certainty of collapse?I get the impression that a lot of people here are sure that collapse is going to happen sooner or later. So my question to you is: what kind of event or series of events should happen to change your mind about this? My thoughts on this:
* This is a weird binary. Some of the most active/activist people I know are pretty much doomers but still try to change things within their means, even if it just means taking care of the people around them through mutual aid.
* This equates people who take the challenges we are facing seriously with people who engage in actual misinformation to maintain their profits and the status quo. "Doomer" is a vague term, while denialism is proven to have happened through big companies for decades. These two things are not the same.
* There is a grain of truth in it too, though: There are literally people who use doomerism as a grift while maintaining the status quo. There's the super rich who buy luxury bunkers and stuff. Doomerism can also be pretty toxic at times.

It's a free for all: "If it doesn't feed our egos and our pride, it's useless". We hurt others on social media just to prove a point or to discharge our inner anger and disatisfaction.
In terms of the environment, we would have to give up 90% of our consumerism, which would mean reducing our confort radically to help people around the world, restore ecosystems and halt greenhouse gas emissions.
What is all of this if not psychopathy and narcissim, deficient emotional responses, lack of empathy, and poor behavioral controls? We are like children, everything to fight for, yet we prefer to stay in the playground, apathetic, cynic, unmotivated and never wanting to give up anything.

Numerical sequences in iq tests are used to measure intelligence, a simple numerical sequence is 2,4,6,8,...
The answer is 10 and you can go on, 12,14,16, and so on. However, since an ai is trained on huge amounts of data, and also trained in mathematics, solving known numerical sequences with known patterns doesn't prove it can reason or understands what it solves.
Because if you look up the most difficult numerical sequences on the web and feeds it to chatgpt, he will solve it immediately, even using complex math, like a fibonacci sequence.
So what I did is made a puzzle myself, which was difficult, but not as difficult as the numerical sequences I found on the web, but it was unique, with an unique pattern since I cooked it up myself. So I couldn't have been trained on it.
So it could not solve it, but when I explained it , and I did need to explain it with hands and feet so to speak, it did manage to solve it, and explain to me **why** it was able to solve it.
Many people say it's a parrot or just mimicries, but that isn't true, this proves it can reason, it can learn, since it understand the **why**, even though it wasn't trained on it, that is **how you test intelligence** in the first place.

By delivering large masses of warm, moist air (sometimes directly from the Tropics), ARs establish conditions for the kinds of high snowlines and copious orographic rainfall that have caused the largest historical storms. I discovered collapse at the worst possible time: I was in the throes of a full-blown mental health crisis and had just gotten out of hospital. It fed into my pessimism and hopelessness in a very dark and ugly way.
Since then, I've fully recovered. I found that my interest in and obsession with collapse waned as I regained a sense of my own future.
I believe the prospect of collapse is a very real one, but the worst case scenario that I can genuinely imagine is one wherein parts of the developed world remain relatively untouched and stable for at least the next 150 years (even if much of the rest of the world goes to shit). Since I'm lucky enough to live in a fairly cold part of the developed world, this comforts me even more (although I have thought about moving further south).
I know that this hope is a touch naive - and can be dismissed pretty easily, because I don't have the detail to back it up - but I don't want to think about this topic like a machine anymore. I suppose that's why so many people immediately reject collapse as doomerism. And this thread is full of hopelessness, and it's not a good place to dwell when you're sick.
I feel much better thinking about collapse as a distant possibility and an interesting subject for conversation, rather than an impending certainty. The alternative is weighing myself down with a fear that when I die the world will be a much more brutal and horrible place to live.

Whether or not you believe in Climate Change and/or the Climate Apocalypse, I do not care. The data presents itself as is, and what the future holds is grim. It is not a question of if but when.
The Climate Apocalypse is currently in its beginning stages. People en masse, in the millions, are moving out of areas due to drought. Millions in mexico are currently facing water shortage, and water has become a commodity that has Military protection. Patrols around reservoirs. Remember, millions of mexicans are facing this. The same story applies to places in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Next nations will begin fighting for water and resources. Nations in Africa like Ethiopia will have to resort to war in order to gain sources of water they critically need, as currently they are in dire need of water, and reservoirs are drying up at freighting speeds.
Food will start becoming scarce. Population will rise, and species of animals and insects critical for food production like Bees will die off, creating a higher need of food with a diminishing supply. The international food trade will become a game of bidding, and the poor nations will be hit hardest. But soon even the trade systems will erode as food supply diminishes and nations focus on storing their food. Millions will die, and those who survive will either have to work tirelessly to get enough money for food, or worse case scenario, government largely collapses, or atleast its functions, and people must scavenge for food. This inevitably will lead to cannibalism, something that has been seen various times in famines in the past 100 years.
What happens societally here I am not sure. Organized groups may or may not rise. Government may or may not survive. This is where I wonder how I, and others will survive.
My realistic plan is to move away from society, as population centers will likely become centers of fighting and death. Farming will be important, but what crops can survive in the future, im not sure... Bow hunting will likely be a large source of calories. Living nomadically may also be a good choice, moving north into a hopefully colder and more stable climate.
My Idealistic and fantastical plan of surviving would be organizing some kind of Militia or Band of people. United by one thing, likely Islam, as the despair in the future and lack of muslims in my area will create an urgent need for community amongst muslims. And this Band would protect eachother from Cannibals and Bandits under this union of Allah. Perhaps using our numbers to raid old food plants, or storages, or shopping centers, whatever the case is. Slowly moving North, fending ourselves off from hungry bears and working together to build big camps and establish some kind of Hunting team, making bows from the resources around us.

Is a 401k worth it or is it dangerous with banks collapsing? Please ELI5, I'm new to it, my job is offering me one and I'm confused.Like the title says, I have ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of finance. I have diagnosed math anxiety and no college education. I've also discovered that with the path we're headed down there'll be too little oxygen in the atmosphere for people to survive, I don't know exactly when the air will be unbreathable for humans as I'm not a scientist but I'm guessing this will be a problem everywhere in the next 100 years. Now with this problem in mind and all the other ways in which global warming is/will kill people, I'm pretty confident that humans will be extinct by the start of the next century. But knowing that humans will go extinct has sort of giving me this moral dilemma where it feels like making the world a better place is ultimately pointless, on one hand I believe that people should have a good a life as possible so this makes me oppose all the oppression in the world but then on the other hand it feels like trying to dismantle oppressive systems such as capitalism is pointless now because even if the world was to become perfect tomorrow that perfect world wouldn't even last 3 generations since human extinction is very near. So this kind of leads me to believe that I should only focus on making my life good and shouldn't really care too much about the hardships that others go through because of the oppressive systems in this world but it kinda feels like I'm just using this "there's no point in caring about others cause we'll all go extinct anyways" mentality more as a cop out so I don't feel like I have to confront the flaws of this world more than it being that I just genuinely don't care. I simply believe that having a gun is a personal choice. Besides, no law can stop someone from buying a weapon. I highly doubt that criminals get their firearms legally otherwise, the black market wouldn't thrive, and police wouldn't have much of an issue solving shooting cases.

I see the problem in people's approach toward firearms. Most persons I know fall into two categories when it comes to guns. The first ones are those against gun liberalization, advocating for banning guns and demanding control over sales and registration. They haven't ever held a gun and are afraid to deal with any shooting weapon, preferring to live in a bubble. The second ones are idiots that learned how to handle their pistols from watching movies and don't have any second thoughts about pulling the weapon for no reason, just to show off before friends.

I don't understand how someone could live in a country where owning a gun is a constitutional right and not learn how to handle one for basic protection. We conducted an analysis of 30 years of emission data for all world countries showing that this narrative is misleading. Debt Jubilee - Electric BoogalooFirst and foremost, I understand a lot of this is deep, and I hope the mods can accept it for what is - I am not questioning the validity of said event mentioned. I had it, and it sucked. I am merely following the timeline of a debt based monetary system that also ties in with said event.

**THE WHAT:**
**Debt Based Monetary System:**
*I will be copy/pasting some information from a previously posted thread here because it expands on my point.*
**The creation of currency:**
When currency is created, the US government says "we're gonna spend $800 billion dollars to help fund the war on Ukraine." The federal reserve (a private organization with private owners, those owners being the leaders of private **FOR PROFIT** banks) then says, "ok cool, so then print off $800 billion dollars worth of T-Bills and we'll buy them from you." Once the transaction occurs, the 800 billion dollars is created and enters the money supply. Those 800 billion dollars then lift the price of everything else up, because now there's an extra 800 billion dollars in circulation with the same fixed supply of goods and services available.
This presents 3 clear conflicts of interest.
1. **Money entering the system is created out of debt**. If I don't take out a loan, I won't have enough currency to pay my debt off. Private banking interests profit off inflating a money supply, because with increased money supply comes decreased purchasing power and with that comes higher prices, AND profit off the interest they charge on the loans themselves. The more unaffordable everyday goods and services are, the more expensive it is to live, and the more people rely on debt to live.
2. **Interest**. If you have the very first dollar ever created into existence and you loan it out for principal plus interest, how does the interest get paid out? I**t has to be printed in the future. It does not exist when the contract is signed.** One need look no further than the M2/M3 money supply compared to National Debt clock. There's a clear gap between money readily available and liabilities outstanding. **DEFAULTS IN THE SYSTEM ARE GUARANTEED.**
3. **Third conflict of interest - the sleight of hand:** Every entity, regardless of whether they're an individual or sovereign nation has a balance sheet. The entity has assets, the entity has liabilities. In the context of an individual or corporation, once your liability side exceeds your asset side, you're broke. You as an individual cant spent $1001 when your checking account has $1000 in it. The transaction will either bounce, or it'll go through and your bank will be nice enough to smack you with a $40 overdraft fee for overdrafting $1. Simply put, you didn't have the currency you were trying to spend, and the bank is graciously charging you $40 to loan you $1 to satisfy your obligation.

In the current environment, we haven’t been using debt jubilees because the debt based monetary system is a form of slavery - debt keeps the slaves working their shitty jobs to keep the state around and relevant. This quite literally means that when JPow is ratcheting up interest rates, he's ratcheting them up **until capitulation. Debt is money, money is debt. When you default on your mortgage, that money leaves the money supply.** *Poof.* Gone. **Inflation problem solved. We got rid of money from the system.**

With every debt jubilee event at least in recent history, the government with Roosevelt confiscated US gold and set a fixed price to devalue the USD - the government with Nixon confiscated the WORLDS gold in 71 by removing the US off the gold standard. I can then use crypt0, ETH, IMX, LRC, etc to store value of my earnings (or as my "savings" account) and just swap over to national currency whenever it's time to pay the bills in the hyperinflated currency.
Enter US debt default because “republicans and democrats” couldn’t reach an agreement. Now the citizens don’t have faith in the two-party system anymore either, so you have your apocalyptic event AND they no longer trust democracy.

I was talking to my parents the other day and found out the my grandmothers monthly “rent” at her assisted living facility increased by about $650 per month. It already cost like $6,000 a month as she needs complete care. Of course the care staff there is always understaffed and a revolving door of employees. The food is cafeteria level and overall it just seems like it has gotten worse since it was acquired by investors.
I was thinking about generational wealth and how I am by comparison to others pretty fortunate. My family has land from my grandfather farmer and both my parents made middle class salaries for their careers.
The discrepancy in wealth between millennials and baby boomers is vast and I think large corporations see the boomers wealth as an easy target. They control almost all the wealth in the country and are enter their twilight years. Assisted living, medical costs, home repair cost, time shares etc etc. They are a treasure trove. My view is that the finance class knows this is a last hurrah and they can siphon almost all the wealth from boomers as they head out the door. I hope my parents live a long time and hope others do as well. But I don’t see inheritance in my future. I’m not totally doom and gloom about it. It just seems like this is the reality of the bleak future.
We are heading toward a reality of trillionaires existing in a world that homelessness, poverty and hunger still exist.

Browsing r/jobs or r/lostgeneration is like wading into a no-man’s land of of depressed applicants with no sign of an end to their joblessness. I am doing freelance work but this market is also caving in. Applying to salary jobs either in person or online is like a black hole, you put your resume in and never hear anything back but rejections. Even interviews have dried up and my experience and qualifications should command an at least an interview but companies are seemingly totally uninterested in even this theater.
Also, there is this YouTube channel by a recruiter and his perspective is bleak (life after layoff). Apparently people are killing themselves because the jobs situation is so terrifying. Like, imagine having a baby to care for and you are running out of money applying for positions with 1500 applicants. Is capitalism even functioning at this point? Is the hierarchy even valid (i.e. if hard work brings nothing, is hard work even worth it or a measure of a person)?
Our political leaders seem to be full steam ahead with their war agenda, hundreds of thousands of the most fit fighters dead in Eastern Europe. With the use of the Wagner group in Russia, private capital is employing the use of prisoners to attack Ukraine. With no work, and many comments on social media and advertising to "enlist" for the war effort, it seems like the economy will soon be replaced by an economy of war.

Now you guys may say, "dumb poll, it's obviously the modern industrial period" BUT for as many things that Industrial Society has given us, it has taken away and disrupted. It has also produced new monstrosities and brought death and oppression on a scale hitherto unheard of. We invented "better" farming and production, but that exact same industrial agriculture and production is what is responsible for the destruction of the biosphere, soil depletion, deforestation, mass extinctions, climate change, microplastics, forever chemicals, air pollution, water pollution etc etc. Do not forget the dark side of industrial society. If by "better", you mean greater productivity and turning a profit then sure, Industrial society is better. If you mean "better", in terms of its effect on human relationships and the environment then not necessarily. It's more nuanced than that. To be honest, I view the technology of our ancestors as superior to ours purely due to their sustainability and longevity, whether it be the wood and water powered technology of the Medievals or even the delicate stone craft of Paleolithic hunter gatherers or Homo Erectus (the most long surviving Human species).
True innovation must not simply be about making something bigger in scale or faster or increasing productivity but should also consider negative externalities as well as the disruptions it may cause to the environment and community relationships. Only considering an increase in productivity, when evaluating innovation, is short sighted, many more questions must be asked if a tool is to be considered innovative. Is the new tool cheaper than the one it replaces? Is the manufacturing process for the tool sustainable and clean? Is it as small scale as the one it replaces? Does it do work which is demonstrably better than the one it replaces? Does it use less energy, what type of energy, is it renewable and non-polluting? Can it be repairable and maintained close to home, or does it require a monstrous, carbon-emitting supply chain for it to be delivered, repaired, and maintained? Does it disrupt anything good that already exists, such community, family relationships and the environment? There should be many parameters, other than purely productivity and the ability to turn a profit, that must be met before something can be considered truly innovative. Our standard for what is innovation, must be raised from one that only considers profit and productivity, to one that also considers the dignity of the human being as well as care for the natural world.
With that I will cast my vote which would be the **medieval period.**

The medievals are the civilization we should aspire to be - it was driven by wind and water. It They achieved remarkable standards of living, elegantly powered by wood and water, yes, even for peasants, without highly destructive industrial means. The Dark Ages should really be called the Light Ages. The medievals laid the groundwork for modernity - the mechanical clock, water/wind mills, the compass, mechanical printing press, three field agricultural system, horse collar, peak innovation of the plough, eyeglasses etc etc. The unsurpassed quality and beauty of medieval architecture and construction need not be mentioned, let alone the art.
Medieval cities were also remarkably well planned and sustainable, contrary to popular belief. The reputation of medieval cities being ill organized, putrid and disgusting is pure myth. Medieval cities were well ordered and designed, there was regulations imposed by town councils on matters of sanitation. There was canals, water conduits, wells and fountains provided (relatively) fresh water to the urban populace.
Furthermore, the tempo of life was slow, even leisurely; the pace of work relaxed. Our ancestors may not have been rich, but they had an abundance of leisure.
The medieval calendar was filled with holidays. Official -- that is, church -- holidays included not only long "vacations" at Christmas, Easter, and midsummer but also numerous saints' andrest days. These were spent both in sober churchgoing and in feasting, drinking and merrymaking. In addition to official celebrations, there were often weeks' worth of ales -- to mark important life events (bride ales or wake ales) as well as less momentous occasions (scot ale, lamb ale, and hock ale). All told, holiday leisure time in medieval England took up probably about one-third of the year. And the English were apparently working harder than their neighbors. The *ancien règime* in France is reported to have guaranteed fifty-two Sundays, ninety rest days, and thirty-eight holidays. In Spain, travelers noted that holidays totaled five months per year.
The peasant's free time extended beyond officially sanctioned holidays. There is considerable evidence of what economists call the backward-bending supply curve of labor -- the idea that when wages rise, workers supply less labor. During one period of unusually high wages (the late fourteenth century), many laborers refused to work "by the year or the half year or by any of the usual terms but only by the day." And they worked only as many days as were necessary to earn their customary income -- which in this case amounted to about 120 days a year, for a probable total of only 1,440 hours annually (this estimate assumes a 12-hour day because the days worked were probably during spring, summer and fall). A thirteenth-century estimate finds that whole peasant families did not put in more than 150 days per year on their land. Manorial records from fourteenth-century England indicate an extremely short working year -- 175 days -- for servile laborers. Later evidence for farmer-miners, a group with control over their worktime, indicates they worked only 180 days a year.
H5N1 Virus Identified in the Brain of Multiple Wild Carnivore SpeciesWild carnivore species infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N1 during the 2021–2022 outbreak in the Netherlands included red fox (*Vulpes vulpes*), polecat (*Mustela putorius*), otter (*Lutra lutra*), and badger (*Meles meles*). Most of the animals were submitted for testing because they showed neurological signs. In this study, the HPAI H5N1 virus was detected by PCR and/or immunohistochemistry in 11 animals and was primarily present in brain tissue, often associated with a (meningo) encephalitis in the cerebrum. In contrast, the virus was rarely detected in the respiratory tract and intestinal tract and associated lesions were minimal.

Currently, no mutations, associated with a switch to usage of the human receptor for virus entry, have been identified in HPAI viruses from avian or mammalian species. However, the detection of viruses carrying markers for mammalian adaptation, which are correlated with increased replication and virulence in mammals, may increase the risk for transmission to humans.

My friends all can talk a good game but it’s only talk. They’re intelligent people and it makes me sad.
When I owned my home I planted three shag bark hickory trees. I chose them because they have tap roots so they should last longer. Plus they bring minerals up to the top. I ripped out a bunch of other plants to replant with all legitimate native plants. After five years I had a few inches of some very nice soil where it was just clay before.
The yard was starting to look very nice and lush. I no longer had to worry about watering because of how things were transforming. We would go and sit in the middle of that part of the yard, which was about 40x40 feet, the air had a nice smell and felt cooler.
While we would be outside my friends and I would talk about how quickly my efforts changed that one part of the city. We would also talk about how I noticed the change of when plants bloomed. Every thing was getting to be about a month earlier then what it should’ve been. I had all kinds of bees that were going to go hungry.
But, they would be driving all over the country and flying to here and there. It didn’t matter because it was too late and it is all doomed anyway.
I tried to do my best at setting an example. I did have a nice area for naps in the hammock. Plus there were more squirrels for the dog to chase. I miss my yard. Lol.

"Serious people" promote BAU, while "hysterical" experts get marginalized.I work for an EU country's public health organ. Think of the Austrian equivalent of the CDC. What I have seen internally at work over the last three years has completely destroyed my world view and faith in our governments ever saving us from the collapse.
BAU is the word of the day. If you do not play ball, you are viewed as "not serious"/"alarmist" and the "adults in the room" will ignore you. Repeat after me: Covid is a mild illness equivalent to influenza, Covid is not airborne, masks do not work, and everyone should work from the office all the time. This is what the politicians want to hear, and it has been clearly communicated to upper management. Upper management refuses to listen to anyone who does not tow the line.
Over the past three years, I have seen people in my organization speak up against BAU (experts in their field, saying that Covid is airborne and that ventilation/masks need to be prioritized) and 1) they are initially bullied/intimidated by management ("you can't be serious", "you don't know what you're talking about", "be quiet"), 2) their inputs are excluded from the final recommendations, 3) they aren't invited to the meetings anymore, 4) they are so demotivated and disgusted that they just give up.
All of the covid-deniers/management/bootlickers are back in the office 5 days a week. All of the people who treat covid with the seriousness that it deserves, do not want to come to an open-plan office where no one wears masks and people openly comes to work while sick with covid, so they stay at home and work remotely. This creates a situation where all the people in the office are the "serious people" and the remote workers are further marginalized and sidelined. That is, the covid-deniers can consolidate BAU into all the recommendations.
The covid-deniers have the backing of the politicians, media, and businesses, so they are fearless. They make recommendations on areas that they are not experts in. By contrast, the experts in the field are very careful with what they say, and they are not comfortable speculating about other areas. I was in a meeting with two remote experts, and it was fascinating:
**Person A**: When [Fauci equivalent] said "XXX" inn my area of expertize, I was so angry, it was complete bullshit. He knows nothing about my area, and I have said time and time again that these recommendations are bullshit.
**Person B**: What? It's bullshit? You know, I was suspicious about that, as it didn't seem to make sense, but I'm not an expert in that field, so I didn't say anything. You know, when [Fauci equivalent] said "YYY" on my area of expertize, I was also very angry as it was completely wrong.
**Person A**: YYY was wrong? I also was suspicious as it didn't seem to be correct, but it's not my field so I wasn't certain about it.
Basically, those who promote BAU can say anything they want, and they have the political/structural support behind them. The actual experts in the field are atomized, working alone/remotely (due to being harrassed and not wanting to catch covid), and hence ignored.
I have been in policy meetings where top management (think Fauci) equated mask-wearers with anti-vaxers. And there is nothing to be done about it. If you complain, you are "not being professional" and you will be marginalized (if not outright bullied and harrassed). Only "serious people" get to be included in policy decisions, and serious people know that BAU is what is appropriate for our country. How can you be taken seriously when you are "being hysterical and constantly overreacting"?
I also cannot stress enough how difficult it is to rise in this organization. You can "easily" become a senior scientist, but you will never ever touch a management position without an unwavering sense of loyalty upwards. Management leads the scientific teams, decides the final talking points, does the final edits. Management knows who its master is, who it serves, and that is not the public.
Covid is not airborne. If it was airborne we would need to wear masks and focus on ventilation. Masks don't work (and they're expensive take effort) and ventilation is expensive, therefore we do not recommend it. Since we are not recommending masks/ventilation, by definition covid cannot be airborne.
BAU will be the death of us. I have clearly seen that those in positions of power do not listen to reason, they only listen to their masters and the people who pay their salaries. They cannot be convinced otherwise, no matter the amount of data they are shown. They are bought and paid for.
The worst part is that many people in the public do not know this, and they refer to my organization as saying "the pandemic is over", "we don't need masks", etc. etc. They do not see that we are just parroting what the politicians want to hear, and that the real experts are working remotely from home while wearing N95 masks and avoiding the office like the plague, while buffoons who have caught covid 5+ times and went speed-dating during the omicron wave are running the show and writing the press releases.
Sometimes people ask me "if only China had given us more warning, we could have prepared...?" to which my answer is a clear: "No". We have had 3 years now, and we still have our eyes purposefully closed. What good would an extra 2 weeks in March 2020 have helped, if we haven't done anything for the last 3 years?
There is a saying: "Find an article in the newspaper about a topic that you are an expert in. Find all of the errors that the author has made. Now realize that whenever you read an article about a different topic (that you aren't an expert in), you are reading the same amount of errors, but not knowing it." This is my experience with the covid pandemic. My country, my government, my organization has clearly failed its people, and I can see that from the inside. But from the outside it looks "ok". If these are the hidden cracks that I see from the inside, how many cracks are there in other areas of the state? In food/agriculture? In the military? In the energy sector? In the banking sector? All these sectors, filled with serious people constantly promoting BAU, BAU, BAU.
I don't have a happy ending to this post. I just wanted to say that these last three years has been a serious awakening for me regarding how "serious people" promote BAU with the full backing of the system and "hysterical people" (experts) get marginalized and ignored.
Searching for infinite energyA philosophical approach towards energy. Humanity started to utilize massive amounts of fossil fuels in the 19th and 20th century. As fossil fuels are inherently finite a premonition came alongside it's extraction. We need to find an "infinite" source of energy for humans to prosper. Adverse effects from burning hydrocarbons cut the timescale for mankind to find a better source of energy.
In general, there are Renewables (Wind/Solar), Fusion and Fission with more abundant materials (Thorium, Breeder Reactors \[Uranium-238\]) as a likely contender for "infinite" energy.
Why do I remain sceptic about decarbonization and the holy grail of energy?
* The amount of energy humankind needs now and in the near future. It's difficult to envision an "infinite" energy source for this sort of variable demand.
* There would be no excuse anymore not to uplift the energy poor. Terraforming with the help of desalination would become possible. Energy intensive decarbonization and recycling.
In that way I would say renewables aren't "infinite" or uplifting (for now). Yes, the price is falling, but it doesn't trigger that magic point I am trying to convene with this text. Maybe I am pessimistic or optimistic that if there is this magic source humanity would put all their into it to rebuild itself. As long as there is no "infinite" energy the finite stuff is going to be used.

Even if it's not as severe fundamentally as past fascist governmental bodies (which doesn't make it untrue just because its "not as bad as the worst-case scenario), I agreed with another post calling it a "proto-fascist republic" on the basis that it is almost entirely up to the standard of a fascist government's way of handling things on a regional state governmental level. As per the definition of fascism as involving such key elements as below:

The "Make America Great Again" is a great movement to cite on the fascist principle of the mythical event of "national rebirth and regeneration" often touted during fascist rules to ignite the people to reclaim a nonexistent past greatness in a time where that state is nonfeasible and impossible to achieve in order for the government to gain popular support by groups that are often conservative rejects.

Not sure if this is pertinent, but I felt it was collapse related. Besides the obvious implied threat to infrastructure, the vilification of 'preppers' seems dangerous. The prepping and survivalist movement certainly attracts disenfranchised fringe elements, but not everyone who prepares for the worst is a far-right, or far-right adjacent nutjob advocating for domestic terrorism. I feel like I may be generalizing, but it seems disaster preparedness gets a bad rap in the media, unless its a story directly related to a disaster. People are told to have 72 hours worth of food, water and medicine on hand, but going beyond that is often viewed as overreaction or hoarding.

Slowly boiling the frogThe question that we all have on our minds is: When will the collapse happen? The answer is: the collapse is happening right now, all around us, in slow motion.
Upon certain occasions, you have a harmonious and stable society, and the collapse happens all of a sudden. For example the explosion of the volcano Santorini which triggered the Bronze Age collapse. Such sudden and unpredictable collapses are often due to natural disasters. A volcano explodes, or a meteor falls down, you can't do anything about it. However this is a relatively rare scenario.
What happens most often is a gradually building up collapse in the slow motion. The society gradually slips from a harmonious and stable level, to a total collapse, within a time period of decades, or perhaps centuries even. A fire here, a train derailment there, and so on. Infrastructure will continuously keep decaying, leading to more and more accidents and failures. The people will keep degrading, leading to a more dysfunctional society, torn families, more violence, and less morality and rationality. The governments and corporations will becoming even more brazen and impudent, slowly leading into a totalitarian like conditions.
During the 19th century scientists found that if you put a frog in the boiling water, it will jump out immediately. But if you put the frog in the cold water, and slowly keep warming it to a boil, the frog will never notice how the water is becoming hotter, and will be boiled alive in the water.
At first the collapse is barely visible, then it will accelerate, accelerate, until everything finally comes crashing down. When an avalanche happens, everyone sees the avalanche, nobody sees how for a long time snowflake by snowflake were falling onto the ledge of the cliff, leading to a build up in snow. So the collapse will continue slowly until it reaches a certain threshold, where society would no longer be able to support it's weight, and then it all comes crashing down at once.
The point here is to not miss signs of the collapse. Everyone should look at the small snowflakes that may signify the presence of an avalanche in the future. These small details may include mass shootings, people doing dumb things on tiktock, worsening customer service in phone calls, phthalates leading to decreasing fertility. What's even worse, is that all these different parts of the collapse create a feedback loop of sorts. Every individual part of the collapse feeds into every other part, thus compounding the effect. When you have a society with multiple variables of disfunction it just compounds the magnitude.
Water is getting hotter bit by bit, are the little signs of societal disfunction that you see. This has been going on since the 1990s at least. For example, the prevalence of obese people, people addicted to drugs, people addicted to video games, and hedonists in general. We can put forth a convincing argument that in a truly harmonious society, such people would be very rare to find. The recent ecological disasters are when you see the snow bank starting shifting down the mountain, seconds before the avalanche hits. This is when the water has already reached the temperature of a hot spring, and it's rising.

I agree with a lot of the posts I am seeing in this group related to the spread of avian flu. This is a big one and if it (H5N1) makes the jump to human to human spread we are in for some major trouble that we should be alarmed about. I find it particularly interesting that in the US, possibly elsewhere as well, the social divisions brought on by the inappropriate responses and communications regarding COVID have us sitting ripe for the crisis to scale at an exponential rate. It’s important to understand that science isn’t good (or bad). Science is just a tool for asking questions. If you ask wicked questions, you’ll get wicked results. If you ask for power it’ll make power. If you ask to kill the most people it’ll do that. You can’t just ‘follow the science’. This is like saying ‘follow the math’. OK, what’s the math problem? Steps to Prepare for the CollapseHey everyone!
So, I have been an active reader of r/Collapse since 2010.
Recently, I have seen many posts where people seem hopeless. I feel very sorry for anyone who feels hopeless.
I personally took some drastic steps to prepare for the Collapse 6 years ago. I wanted to share these steps with the r/Collapse community because I think these steps could help people.
Now, I realize that these steps are very drastic, but I don't have any easy answers to give people. Collapse of society will be extremely horrible, and millions of people will die, unfortunately. These steps are designed to help people get an idea for what Collapse will look like and what they can do to prepare for Collapse.
So, here are the steps which I started 6 years ago:
1. I left my career as an Engineer, and I started a new career in Nursing. I decided to do this because my career in Engineering was unstable. I lost my job in 2008 when the Great Recession happened, but my friends who were Nurses didn't lose their jobs. Nursing is a more stable job because the Medical Field is subsidized by the Government. The Government subsidizes hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, etc. So, Nursing jobs are much more stable.
2. I went back to school and graduated from the LPN Program. It took 3 years because I was a part-time student. I finished the program last year.
3. I have delevoped a plan for how to respond when the economy crashes. So, when Collapse starts, I believe that the Unemployment Rate will climb to 10%+. In Third World countries, the Unemployment Rate will obviously climb much higher than 10%. In the US, the Unemployment Rate will probably climb to 10% within a period of 1 year. Then, the Unemployment Rate will probably stay at 10% for a few years as the world gradually deteriorates further. I anticipate that WW3 will start within the next 5 years. When WW3 starts, the Unemployement Rate will dramatically pass 20%+.
So, when the economy crashes and the Unemployment Rate passes 10%, my plan is to move to land in the country with some friends and family. I have had several conversations with 3 other people, and all 3 of them agree with me completely. We have alreadly identified some farm land that is about 20 miles outside the Big City. So, we can get some farm land but still drive to the Big City to work. We have discussed growing our own food and trading with our neighboors. I have my job as an LPN, and I could get a job at a hospital/clinic. The government subsidizes hospital/clinic, and jobs there should be more stable when Collapse starts.
I'm interested in living on a farm outside the Big City because crime rate will sky-rocket when the economy crashes. The economic crash will cause many people to become homeless also. I don't think that it would be a good idea to stay in the Big City when the economy crashes.
So, I hope that these ideas help give other people ideas about what they could do. Good luck.

How to Counter Economic Collapse
Despair, Action, and CourageHello, this is the first of a series of posts titled Despair, Action, and Courage in which I will provide resources and guides for viewers to fight primarily the climate crisis that isn't carbon footprint bullshit. First let me tell you why I even bother and why you should even bother.

I am a 20 year old who feels like they've come across a cognitohazard discovering this sub, it's given me extreme anxiety and made me a doomer drained of hope. I know many of you feel the same, especially the young, we've only been here so long. I've had this doomerism take over me for a few weeks now in a constant state of despair and have been changing my life style to make the best of my time, but I still just can't let the thoughts escape my day-to-day head, let alone when trying to sleep.

I've talked to people and have seen other's perspective upon our predicament, I have my thoughts on why I think they're wrong, too optimistic, they don't know what I know about how bad things are, etc. My physics professor told me the truth usually lies between optimism and pessimism to which I felt is a fucking useless analysis because the gap between the two is unmeasurable, but when I think about it, he's right.

When I look at the IPCC we can tell that they're, although very diligent and give great data, still recklessly hopeful and on the other end of the spectrum there are individuals who will not be named that pick the worse-case scenarios of sciences that they don't fully understand and have predicted NTHE multiple times over.

I see these differences I still don't see hope given how dire everything is, but I see a chance, just the teeny tinyist fucking chance that something will change for the better, I don't know what that will look like, I don't care, there is something worth fighting for and I don't want to just lay down and accept annihilation and you shouldn't either, it does no one any good worrying about the future, so why not do something, even just the smallest thing, even if it just lets a dolphin experience life for just a little bit longer.

Don't get me wrong, we're in a polycrisis, it's overwhelming how fucked we are. I focus on the climate because it's an extinction level threat and the solutions towards the climate crisis often fixes 5 other problems. Every problem we have today are worsened and will be even more so by a hothouse Earth.

To my brothers and sisters who want to at least go down with a fight, organization is essential just as our demise is being organized. We need not hope, but courage, for there is nothing to hope for.

Nothing is permanent. You will die, in a billion years the sun will boil the Earth's oceans, and in trillions of years the universe will die of heat death. In my area, everybody sees the mild winters as a good thingand it pisses me off so much. Nobody takes the time to stop and realize that these warm days in the middle of February are not normal and are NOT something to celebrate. People say it’s representation of “better days ahead” because spring will be here soon, but that’s not even close to correct. Grossly UnpreparedIt's like no one is listening. Everyone here where I live seems to be stuck in this collective brain fog, either unable or unwilling to connect the dots of all the warning signs at play. I'm mostly dependent on my family income, looking for work and the job market here is so predatory. I don't know what to do or how much time I have left to even save or prepare. I don't know what to even work towards because the future seems so alien to what I've been taught to prepare for my whole life. There's too many factors at play, it's like trying to navigate a mind field. I can't grow my own food, I don't have my own land because we're renting, my mom is sick, I don't even have a car and public transportation is so grossly neglected here, I'll probably be forced to work towards getting one soon which will eat into my plans and living expenses. I'm trying to get my family to open their eyes to the situation but they just write me off as paranoid or too pessimistic for my age. I genuinely don't know what to do anymore, the future looks so bleak and depressing, I'm struggling to find the motivation to survive. I don't think the developed world understands what we've sacrificed, nature, simplicity, sustainability, security and community. I never wanted much in life all I want is to simply exist without all these pointless obligations in line with that of capitalism in consumerism, it is unsustainable. Yet I feel helpless to do anything about it. The irreversible damage this society has done to it's people and the planet makes me almost wish I was never born.

Impacts of these data centres locally vary from location to location, examples are limiting new housing due to unforeseen energy demands in the area and reduced water supplies / usage caps.

The interview is about climate change, but I think it sums up collapse tbh. This post was originally going to be about how virtually every single institution needed for change is either thoroughly corrupted or in tatters. That would be too long, so I’m going to focus on people in general.
TL;DR: We’re fucked. The social capital needed for meaningful change doesn’t exist. Most people’s brains are fried, they’re mentally ill, stressed out etc. They’re socially isolated, don’t participate in society, and are fundamentally not capable of the actions and sacrifices needed for meaningful change.
I often see people talking about the need for revolution. For organized resistance to BAU. The Marxists want to overthrow capitalism, the anarchists want to overthrow the state, the more moderate people want to do a New Deal type revolution where we force political and legislative change through the democratic process. People also want a social revolution where people change their consciousness and values to better reflect the value of the natural world and the reality of scares resources.
How?
When I go outside, talk to my friends, chat it up at bars with strangers, talk on the internet, coach kids, etc, virtually nobody is a functional human being (myself included). They are fundamentally not personally capable of rising to that sort of challenge. Everybody has a serious mental illness (this is reflected well in the sociological and medical data). Almost everyone’s brain is completely fried. They spend their time getting instant dopamine hits from television, social media, pornography, videogames, etc. They have pitiful attention spans. If you can’t make your point in soundbites or 150 characters, they don’t have time for it. Few people read serious books. I can count on one hand the number of people decently informed about important global issues, ranging from Ukraine to tarrifs. General knowledge is dismal. People don’t know anything about history, geography, the sciences etc. Drug abuse is rampant. Half of my old high school friends spend half their day stoned. People don’t have authentic culture. Define themselves by their materialistic consumption. I travel. I like Star Wars. Social bonds are at record lows. People are antisocial, dislike each other, are alienated from their community. Volunteering, community service, participation in civic organizations (boy scouts, church, social clubs etc) is at an all time low and continuing to fall. Go check out the recent post on hikikomori (Acute social withdrawal. Think hermit). Look at the comments. A staggering number are people saying this isn’t a bad thing… Etc. I could continue for many pages. Hopefully you get the point.
It's a terrible situation for the adults. It pales in comparison to children. That’s catastrophic. Head over to r/teachers. It’s a genuinely a nightmare. They had to introduce a ban on posts about resigning… I personally know several teachers who have resigned. One did so because he was no longer allowed to fail students or hold them back. If by a miracle a student did fail, they cannot be held back. This was implemented because post covid, if the school enforced basic standards, the school system would collapse. Too many kids would be held back. The other resigned because the kids are animals. They’d throw chairs… One tried to stab him! (the administration refused to punish the kid, hence the resignation). If you want a black pill, do some research on the sociological data coming out for children. Or go interact with them. It’s part of my job. They’re a wreck. I have met adults without a mental illness. I have never met a kid who I couldn’t tell was mentally ill after some time spent with them. Often, I can tell what it is within an hour. This is breaking my heart so I’m go stop. Again, I could go on.
You cannot organize a revolution with people like this. It is not possible. Revolutions require hard work, education, discipline, persistence, drive, delayed gratification, trustworthiness, critical thinking. etc. These are not qualities people have.
The military is facing a recruitment crisis in large part because the majority of the population is ineligible to serve because they’re morbidly obese or have a mental illness. While businesses would get rid of 90% of this problem if they paid living wages, plenty of companies (including one’s whose owners I personally know) are struggling to find people who do the absolute basics. Show up, be sober, do the task assigned. Most every volunteer run organization I know of, from sports teams to polling stations for voting, are kept alive solely by old people on the brink of retirement/death. This is not an anomaly.
How are we going to have a revolution if the majority of people are physically unfit for basic service? Goodluck fighting the fascists when running the 100 meter dash gives you cramps. How are you going to organize labor or whatever fantasy plan you have if you cannot get recruits to stay off their phones during the meeting and show up sober? How are you going to democratically pressure the system if the voting poles close because there’s no volunteers? Etc.
I was inspired to make this post because I’m on a mission of self-improvement. Collapse will kill me, but I want to die a real human being. It’s hard. TBH, I’m failing. I have a lot of support, free time, drive etc. I’m realizing just how much effort it will take for people (especially the children) to become healthy, authentic human beings. There is no way a meaningful number of people are going to be capable of this. I’m not even sure I am. This is the biggest black pill for me.

Recently, I've been pondering the concept of the "Spiral White House Theory," which posits that the elections in the United States are cyclical and that regardless of political affiliation, the outcome is predetermined.
From my perspective, this theory aligns with my own beliefs about the detachment and unconventional thinking that often characterizes the schizotypal mindset. I see the political machine as a never-ending spiral, with each election cycle bringing us closer to collapse, regardless of who occupies the White House.

I am in South East Asia and for like 2 weeks it was very hard to find onions. I have not seen this talked about here before.It was hard to find onions here for like 2 weeks. Multiple grocery stores did not have them. There was a news article about someone trying to bring them here from another country when they were on a flight. Even when we ordered pizza the other day, they did not have any onions and offered extra of another topping for free.
With all that being said, there were onions available in the store today. I have always been collapse conscious, but kind of expected it to collapse hard. It was a little strange seeing a staple of any kitchen out of stock. It made me realize that this is what it will look like. Today, there are no onions. Next time there may be a lot more empty shelves.

Swarming attack by 10 to 15 young people leaves 2 transit workers hurt, Toronto police saySs: something on the rise of late, is young people (sometimes groups of girls, other not identified, so assumed male I guess) swarming and attacking random people. This latest is two TTC workers, a public transit service in Toronto Canada. Less than a month earlier there was a swarming event by 8 teen girls where they stabbed a homeless man, and it's probably spawning more copycats.
This is related to collapse because the young people, often framed as the idealists who are actually protesting and taking direct action, also seem to be getting more generally violent, which could lead to a violent attack on more of the population or even other institutions which could lead to increased chaos.
