Science Snippets: Is the Beginning of El Niño the End of Us?
A world without fossil fuels can only support 1 billion people, not 8 billion peopleScientists at MIT have made the En-ROADS climate simulator so that people can quickly simulate how much the world will warm (1). I had a chance to use the tool recently, and I was extremely dissipated because this simulator completely ignores 1 HUGE problem: how do these dramatic changes affect the world's population?
In order to have an accurate and useful climate simulator, the tool should also estimate how many people would be able to live in the world. That is a very challenging question to answer.
In order to accurately answer that question, a scientific team would need to perform a scientific study and have the study published in a Scientific Journal, such as Nature or Science.
At best, we can only estimate how dramatically the world's population would be affected by stopping fossil fuel usage completely.
So, here is a list of things that would be necessary to do to stop Climate Change now:
* The world would have to stop using fossil fuels completely
* So, oil, coal, natural gas, etc couldn't be used at all
* The world's population would be forced to dramatically decline from 8 billion to approximately 1 billion nearly immediately. I don't know exactly how many people could live in a world without fossil fuels, but I'm using 1 billion people as an approximation because that is how many people lived on Earth in the 1800s (2).
* In the 1800s, people didn't have electricity, cars, trucks, tractors, planes, etc.
* The world's population would have to dramatically decline because fossil fuels are used to produce fertilizers and other chemicals in farms. Also, diesel is used on every farm around the world to power tractors. Additionally, diesel is used to power trucks to transports raw crops to factories. Fossil fuels are used to power the factories and turn the raw crops into edible food.
* Additionally, fossil fuels are used to transport the edible food to stores around the world. Millions of ships and trucks are used to transport food.
So, there is simply no easy solution. We have made fossil fuels a huge part of society. Now, eliminating fossil fuels from society would take society back to the 1800s.
Now, if you talked to climatologists in private, they will admit that society is basically screwed (3). Climatologists know that society is screwed.

However poor you are, you can live poorer. I started out below minimum wage. While my coworkers lived in cheap housing I chose to sleep in old cars, migrant labor camps, slums, and a tent in the woods. Putting aside half my income, accumulated enough to pay my way through voc-tech school. When that failed repeated the labor/frugal/save try-again cycle.
Second attempt succeeded. Since that method works I continued living on half my income and used my growing cash reserve for surprise emergencies & opportunities. With ready cash life relaxes and moves your way; never fear being fired, always ready to accept opportunities far away.
That's reality. You either take the pain up front or it stretches out forever.

17 years old. Fearing the future1. is the West going to fall to the east. I don’t like China- it’s a horrific regime, that does awful things to people such as the Uyghurs, criminals, and others. I’ve heard mixed things, apparently they are massively growing in power, but have alos heard that they are headed for economic collapse and environmental breakdown, with an aging population that is largely male, that will lead to total collapse before they become our overlords. Basically- will China take over and become the next major political/cultural/economic power and do science, space travel, and empire stuff before everyone else….. or is this just madness.

I am shockingly disappointed with the mods in this thread. No one said there is no impact from population, just that the impact compared to industry is minuscule. And it is a dangerous argument because actual Nazis use it to advocate for genocide, and disregards the fact that most “population” is coming from poorer countries with less individual impact, while population in western countries that consume more is already falling.
I am genuinely horrified that you keep taking down the links showing this while allowing this dangerous myth to be promoted. It’s not “bad faith” to point out how Nazis use this myth to push for genocide when that is exactly what they are doing.

Location: Waterloo, ON and elsewhere.
So, we crossed the border last year after a lot of effort, and we're seriously considering going back when our lease is up. Why? A lot of reasons, but what it all boils down to is that the US and Canada, despite the protestations of so many (almost exclusively white and middle-aged) Canadians and right-wing nutjob Americans, aren't that different. At all. It's largely a matter of picking your poison in things like health care - America's dystopian for-profit system or Canada's approaching-dystopian public system that's been systematically under-invested in. Yes, there's a lot of violence in the States, but I'm increasingly becoming convinced that the only thing stopping a lot of that in Canada are gun control laws, not some imagined essential difference in the Canadian character. Same pathologies, same toxicity, same pressures, just a few years behind up here. There's Punisher decals on black trucks here, too - fewer than other places, but it's here.
The States look a little scary even just separated by a lake after you've been gone a few months, but we've got networks there, friends and family, and those networks are the greatest wealth you can have. You can stockpile all the ammunition you want and all the freeze-dried dog food, and you can imagine yourself into an alternate reality where your housing values will go up forever, but all that eventually runs out or expires.
Maybe that's the lesson - there's a lot of talk about getting somewhere safer, and yes, there's more and less safe. But there is no Shangri-La. There is no paradise you'll get to sit back and watch the world burn from.
So... what I'm seeing here:
\- Weather: not much of a winter, to be honest. 53 degrees Fahrenheit forecasted today, on February 15! Insane compared to historical records.
\- Housing: EVERY. SINGLE. FAMILY. we have met here we've gotten on with that's our age and situation in life has housing only through some sort of angle: their parents sold them a place cheap, they're perma-renters in run-down houses that are barely maintained, they can afford their mortgage only through renting out their basements, whatever. It's pretty remarkable. The complacency of the property owners, the people who own their homes, (I almost want to say "class", because I think there's the making of that) is also remarkable.
How on earth is this going to look in 10 years? There's barely any housing \*today\* for younger people, and immigration targets are pushing half a million yearly. Where are all the new people going to live? Tent cities? $400,000 one-bedroom condos?
\- Cruelty: Yesterday, we took the family to Toronto for a Disney experience thing. We've got two young girls, and the trains were cancelled for a bit because someone killed themselves by jumping on the tracks (on Valentine's Day). We learned about this while standing in line for a bus to get us to Bramalea by some white millennial asshole talking loudly on his phone right behind us and having the balls to complain about this, as if it was a massive personal inconvenience to him personally. Right behind two young girls, he loudly cracks jokes about someone killing themselves, and we as parents have to explain what happened later.
On the positive side... in Toronto, the Disney thing we paid an ungodly amount for was malfunctioning, in a sort of metaphor for industrial society, and we eventually decided to just get a refund, as it looked like the one projector (!) causing the problem wasn't going to be fixed that evening. We made do and had a nice picnic on the lakefront, and that was actually inspiring - people from all over the world in their groups, laughing, playing music, lots of people carrying flowers they'd bought, one Indian woman giving our kids wrapped Lindt chocolates "just because"... that gave me some hope.

While capitalists blame shoplifting, we at r/collapse know that this is a systemic problem based on rent usury, predatory student loans, lack of mental healthcare and general economic despair driving people to shoplift things like baby formula, vegetables, raw meat, toothpaste and first aid supplies.

Overpopulation is the greatest driver of collapse - and its time for people to acknowledge this factAll our problems like energy - food - climate change - global warming and resource depletion are driven by overpopulation. There were just 2 Billion people on this planet 90 years ago. Now we stand at an incredible 8 Billion. The jump from 7 to 8 Billion was the fastest jump by 1 Billion people ever. The jump from 8 Billion to 9 Billion will probably be even faster.
Yet for some reason there are people that still deny this fact and scream nonsense like "overconsumption" or "ecofascim" or other stupid made up words they dont understand.
If we currently need 1.8 Earths with 1.5 Billion rich people and 6.5 Billion poor ones - we would still need 1.8 Earths with 8 Billion medium level wealthy people and 8 Earths with 8 Billion rich people.
If we barely can feed 8 Billion with the use of all tricks like artificial fertilizer - how exactly are we going to feed 9 or 10 Billion? And please dont use the nonsensical food is wasted argument. Because even if its true - you just cannot magically transport all the extra food from the US to Africa without most of it rotting away before it arrives. Sometimes its not even possible to transport surplus food across one country before it gets bad.
As for the stupid "ecofascism" notion - what does it even mean? Seriously? There are too many people - thats a fact. People are reproducing far too much - thats also a fact. We have to decrease overpopulation if we want to avoid collapse - also a fact. To achieve this one has to use drastic methods (of course non violent because it has been proven that populations rebound after wars and other mass killings easily).

This is so beyond okay and we're all just sitting on our hands waiting for the Great Revolution.
A timeline:
In 2022 we saw our right to bodily autonomy stripped by the highest court in the land, citing religious freedom while ignoring the first rule of this land: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
In 2021, after Trump signed an accord with the Taliban and an agreement to withdraw, Afghanistan was overrun by terrorists that forces thousands to flee for their lives while the GOP subsequently continued the anti-immigration stance they've held for decades.
In 2021, prices increased exponentially across the board for every necessity imaginable, with no inflation checks and no end in sight. The cost of eggs in 2023 rose to unimaginable highs, and gas now is unaffordable with price hikes daily.
In 2020, our nation was engulfed in a war for liberty for POC who were (and still are) being massacred by the police on the daily with little to no repercussions, with the government putting essentially a military lockdown on every major protesting city.
In 2020 we saw the world sink under a pandemic when our government had a TEXTBOOK written by the Obama administration from specialized epidemiologists with decades of experience handling pandemics and response efforts--yet the DOJ and Trump presidency effectively ignored it as another "Obama-era" toxin, leading approx. 103 million Americans to infection with over 1.12 million deaths to date (with 308 deaths occurring just yesterday 2/21/2023).
In 2018, migrant children were thrown in cages and separated from their parents until they no longer remembered the faces of their mothers or fathers, some never being returned to this day and forced into an overflooded foster care system.

Even if it's not as severe fundamentally as past fascist governmental bodies (which doesn't make it untrue just because its "not as bad as the worst-case scenario), I agreed with another post calling it a "proto-fascist republic" on the basis that it is almost entirely up to the standard of a fascist government's way of handling things on a regional state governmental level. As per the definition of fascism as involving such key elements as below:

Megathread: East Palestine, Ohio Train DerailmentOn February 3, 2023 around 9PM, a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals, including vinyl chloride, derailed and exploded in the town of East Palestine, Ohio. East Palestine is a town of 4,800 residents near the Ohio–Pennsylvania border. The derailment caused a fire which lasted for several days. On February 6, to prevent further explosions, emergency crews managed the fire into a controlled burn which allowed for a monitored, gradual release of the burning toxic chemicals. The burn led to a mandatory evacuation of residents within a one mile. No immediate deaths or injuries were reported.
The train consisted of 141 loaded cars, nine empty cars, and three locomotives. Around 50 cars were derailed. Twenty of the 141 cars were classified as carrying hazardous materials, 14 of which were carrying vinyl chloride. Other chemicals included butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, isobutylene, combustible liquids, and benzene residue. The National Transportation Safety Board said it had preliminary findings that a mechanical problem on an axle of one of the cars led to the derailment.

## Related Event: Arrest of Reporter Evan Lambert
On February 8, Evan Lambert, a reporter for NewsNation, was approached by two state troopers of the Ohio Highway Patrol and Major General John C. Harris Jr. of the Ohio Adjutant General's Department for being "loud" during his report while reporting live in a gymnasium behind the press conference of DeWine. A confrontation ensued between Major General Harris and Lambert. State troopers and other nearby authorities then intervened in an attempt to break the two up, all of which was caught on nearby cell phone and body camera footage. Harris later stated to officers that Lambert had approached him in an 'aggressive manner' and that "I instinctively put my hands on his chest to keep him from bumping into me, which I felt was inevitable if I had not protected myself". Lambert was eventually moved out of the gym, forced to the ground, and arrested. He was charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct and released later in the day. China has had repeated lockdowns with a zero Covid policy to the point where they locked people in their apartments so long they starved to death. They are killing their own citizens for the zero tolerance policy and even though their citizens know it’s wrong they can’t do anything due to social credit scores and CCP. Is that what kind of lockdowns you really wanted in the US? Yeah, Covid sucked, but most of the lockdowns were on a state to state level, so blame your Governors for that. I never once heard of him wanting to nuke a hurricane or North Korea, can you provide some reference to that? What I do recall is him meeting with other world leaders and basically telling them not to play fuck around and find out. Do you remember when the movie “the interview” was set to come out in theaters and N. Korea threatened to go to war if it hit theaters which stifled its release? Did you forget about them literally parading missiles around it’s streets to threaten to west?

Everyone is suicidal-ish. Have you noticed?I’ve been seeing a lot of indirect suicidal ideation across multiple platforms. Since 2021, I’ve just noticed a sharp increase in suicidal jokes online. People will almost kind of hope for deadly disaster because they either have no hope for the future anyway, or because they’re simply… tired.
It’s not uncommon for someone to make a post about some hypothetical apocalyptic event, and then most of the responses are along the lines of “okay so I don’t have to pay my rent this month.”
It’s this comedic nihilism that I never used to see as often as I do now. And I DONT think people are just being silly.

Location: USA (lower 48 states)
Not sure if it's just me, but people seem to be more aggressive and confrontational lately. I go out of my way to avoid sharing my thoughts or opinions in real life unless absolutely necessary so I try to control for it at least on my end but in general, there's a weird mood hanging in the air and everyone seems on edge. Might also be a seasonal thing, since winter is generally boring and blah and gross but you can tell there's a certain level of tension that seems ever-present any time I go out in public.
Covid cases seem to be high, considering how many people talk about being sick or feeling sick or missing work/schoo/etc. due to illness. Of course, there are other illnesses too but the same non-pharmeceutical measures that work against covid also work against other contagious illnesses. More and more people I know are complaining of random lingering health issues, nothing super intense or severe but people were definitely healthier pre-pandemic. I also know a shit ton of people who became anti-vaxxers now, as well as people who think Ivermectin and Hydroxychloriquine can treat covid. It sucks knowing that people who used to be rational, reasonable, and dependable have boarded the crazy train, but like with so many other things in life, there's nothing I can do about it.
Most people are frighteningly ignorant about covid in general, though I suspect that's by design rather than chance. The government and media are working hard to memory-hole the pandemic so people will go out and spend as much money as possible and all the weak and sick people will die off as soon as possible so the billionaires can make even more money. We live in a profoundly sick, damaged society and once you get a look at it for what it is, it's impossible to ignore the implications of it that run throughout the whole thing like some kind of fucked up tapestry.
Weather patterns are all kinds of fucked up lately. One day it'll be 60 degrees Farenheit and sunny, the next day it'll be freezing and cloudy. Sometimes the temperature changes 10, 15, or more degrees in the span of a few hours. Plants are popping up earlier than they should and some of the trees look weird, like they're not sure what they should be doing because they're confused by all the weird ass weather.
Food prices remain ridiculously high and half the shelves in stores are either partly or completely empty. The quality of produce has also gotten bad enough that some of my family have commented on it. Overall, things don't work as well or as efficiently as they seemed to when I was young or even as well as they did 5 or 10 years ago. Gas prices are also going up again, which certainly doesn't help matters. Luckily I don't drive much but I do need a new car because mine doesn't work worth a damn and is too old and has had way too many problems to really justify repairing it. Meanwhile, I'll just plug along as best as I can like I have been, not like I can do anything else anyways. I figure if I at least learn something useful every day, then it's not a waste.

This is how I see it as well. No need to wait until '24. Hurricane season starts next month, west coast reservoirs are busting records for being empty, the fires have already been going in some places. The war in Ukraine is increasingly shifting international politics in extreme ways, not to mention the fact that Russia is beginning to implode over it and may get loose with their nuclear weapons. Domestically, civil discourse can't sustain peaceful protests much longer and the Supreme Court shit with abortion rights is a breeding ground for secession movements to gain more momentum than they already have. Inflation is getting worse, homelessness and food insecurity are getting worse. Military families - particularly junior enlisted with children, guard soldiers, and reservists are seeing increasing amounts of food insecurity and financial instability. Oh and COVID is still very much here and not going away anytime soon, people have just decided to pretend that isn't the case.
All this is leading into midterm elections, which in my opinion, will paint a picture for how the '24 elections are probably going to go.
My prediction now is that we will enter into a lose-lose situation regardless due to foreign propaganda and disinformation interference in 2016 and then stolen election lies in 2020. If Biden wins, or whoever the Dem candidate is because let's be real, there's a not small chance Biden will not run for reelection, then the fascists are going to riot and might actually have enough steam to attempt another national coup. One thing for sure, after all of the theocratic and freedom destroying policies in Texas and Florida have the local support to attempt to secede. All it takes is one to lead by example and others will follow when they see the fed faulter to do anything about it.
If dumpy wins, or a dumpy backed candidate which I think is more likely, DeSantis seems like the obvious choice right now, I think we are going to see slow and painful regional collapse due to blue states refusing to enforce fascist policies and orders, red states refusing to work economically with blue ones in retaliation, localized riots and fighting, Nazis actively and openly killing LGBTQ and racial and religious minorities without repercussions. The military will split and it's just going to be an absolute dumpster fire.
I think the best option is a Dem winning '24 and fascist states simply leaving without a fight. The remaining US states prepare to take on refugees and batten down the hatches for the ensuing economic depression. The survival of everyone that isn't in a facist theocracy is reliant on community resilance afterwards and adopting local economic systems to trade goods for services instead of using money as a primary barter. Mutual aid will be key and antigun people are gonna have to pack that virtue away for a while if they want to stay alive. Overall, as long as the free states continue to hold down the border from attack and maintain the overall infrastructure of the region, the bigger worries are still going to be climate change and restructuring trade deals to make sure basic needs are met. That and there is gonna be a big time problem with recreational drones being used to carry out domestic terror attacks, but that's a whole thing in and of itself.
The problem is that every single republican and independent voter feels that way already because minorities and women have somewhat equal rights on paper. So they are already ready to kill everyone in those groups to get out of the marginalization of sharing rights.

Prof Simon Michaux's metals paper shows we have 4 TIMES the copper we need. I ran the numbers on his presentations and paper. If we eliminate his strawman of requiring 4 WEEKS storage - and use the industry standard of OVERBUILD instead - there's more than enough metal.Hi all,
it seems Professor Simon Michaux is big in Collapse circles these days as I've heard his name come up a few times recently.
I checked through Michaux's 1000 page PDF (scanning quickly for relevant parts) and watched a few of his youtube presentations.
Strawman 1: Michaux's biggest strawman of the renewables industry is the 4 weeks storage he insists renewables need to get through winter. It's like he hasn't read any peer-reviewed work in the field, and hasn't heard of Overbuild. In other words - many renewables experts I've read agree we cannot do a 100% renewable grid because of winter - so do 170% to compensate! If your continent is particularly hard hit by winter and renewables are down to a third, build 300%! Wind and solar are 1/4 the cost of nuclear so this is now economically viable. So I subtracted the 4 weeks storage back to 2-days, based on Michaux's own numbers about how much metal resources are out there and how much metal the energy transition would cost - including 1.4 billion EV's. It turns out there are *plenty* of metals to build even ridiculous expensive *metal batteries* for 2 days. That is, by his numbers of metal resources and his estimates of how much metal it will take to build the energy transition - the earth has 4 times the copper! See here.

Strawman 2: He rejects pumped hydro! I examined his 1000 page paper and his terse 1 paragraph concerns about sites having ‘very specific requirements’ says to me that he simply has not thought about off-river pumped-hydro. I'm a blogger hobbyist and he's a lifetime professional with a team. Um - are they just not aware of the big names out there? If you build pumped hydro off-river it is cheaper, faster, safer, and satellite scans show every continent and almost every island has hundreds of TIMES the potential sites you wold need! Strawman 3: He always chooses the fancier designs for wind and solar and EV's that require the fancier rarer metals or rare earths. What happened to all the designs around plainer materials with orders-of-magnitude more material? For example - in some instances copper and silver can be replaced by aluminium. By the time some rarer earths became even more rare and expensive, over time the price mechanism will select for those companies ALREADY building with plainer materials. We are about to reach peak oil that is absolutely important for our agriculture - especially artificial fertilizer. Then we have climate change, soil erosion, soil depletion of nutrients etc etc. And by 2050 we are expecting 10 Billion + people.
Sustainably we could perhaps feed 4-5 Billion people. To feed 8 Billion or 10 Billion we need a perfectly functioning system that gets everything out of the soil and is artificially boosted by fertilizer at the expense of future generations. So yes we are overpopulated and soon it will come back to bite us because people were in denial.

The reality of the war in Ukraine.This post is inspired by another on this sub in regards to the potential use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. There was a lot of confusion in regards to what's actually happening on the ground.
The west has done a very good job of controlling the narrative surrounding the war and some users in the previous thread correctly questioned the constant line from our media saying that Russia is on the verge of collapse, yet, we are almost a year into the conflict and the general messaging remains the same. A desperate Russia doing all it can to force Ukraine into submission. But now, we are seeing [a shift](https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/content-series/atlantic-council-strategy-paper-series/preparing-for-victory-a-long-haul-strategy-to-help-ukraine-win-the-war-against-russia-and-secure-the-peace/) in some of the medias narrative. They are slowly shifting away from a certain quick Ukrainian victory to a more ominous line of preparing us for a long, painful conflict which we will certainly be paying for.
I want to start by saying we need to accept the reality that Ukraine is losing the war and the time for Ukraine to negotiate has long since passed. The US and NATO have driven Ukraine to ruin in pursuit of their own agendas. Website Therealnews [conducted an interview](https://therealnews.com/scott-ritter-dont-believe-the-hype-ukraine-cant-win-this-war) with former US Marine intelligence officer and UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter and he gave some pretty blunt truths about the strategic expectations between Russia and NATO in Ukraine and how Russia is already achieving its objectives. Beginning with Putins initial stated goals of De-militarization and De-nazification Ritter had this to say;
*> "Then Russia invaded Ukraine, and Russia has two objectives. One is the demilitarization of Ukraine, the other is the deNazification of Ukraine. Demilitarization means the elimination of all NATO influence on the Ukrainian military, and deNazification means just that, getting rid of everything that Russia considers to be related to the ultra nationalistic ideology of Stepan Bandera and the white supremacist manifestations of that.*
*Now, these are words that I’m not using. I mean, people are going, well, Ritter, yeah, you’re very good at Kremlin talking points. I’d advise people to go back and actually read the amendments put by the United States House of Representatives on Department of Defense Appropriations legislation from 2015 up until just this year. They continuously forbid funds, US taxpayer funds, being used to train the Azov battalion, which is listed by the US Congress as a white supremacist neo-Nazi organization. So anybody who wants to pretend that there isn’t a Nazi problem in Ukraine, simply I refer you to Congress and its own legislation."*
In terms of military capabilities Ritter has this to say;
*> " Then we take a look at capabilities. For certain, Ukraine had a good September. There’s no one that’s going to debate that issue whatsoever. But at what cost? And what I mean by that is in order to achieve this good September, Ukraine had to absorb billions, tens of billions of dollars worth of NATO equipment. It took months to do this. It took months to get people trained on this, to bring the equipment in, to match the equipment with the people, organize it, and bring it to the battlefield. And then in one month, Ukraine pretty much burned through everything. The casualties they’ve suffered have been horrific. They’ve lost the equipment, they’ve lost most of the manpower, and they’re down to a position now where they’re begging the West to help them reconstitute this capability.*
*Russia started September with pretty much the same force structure that it brought in when it invaded in February, and what had happened is Russia pretty much had insufficient resources to the task they had set forth for themselves. They had many parts of the defensive line that were stretched thin, and the Ukrainians were able to exploit this. And the Russians wisely, I believe, traded territory for lives. Now the Russians aren’t in the business of just throwing away Russian lives, and so they weren’t going to hold on to a strong point and defend it to the last man. They were more than happy to withdraw, trade territory, save lives, consolidate their defensive positions, all the while inflicting what should have been prohibitive casualties on the Ukrainians, tens of thousands of losses.*
*Meanwhile, while Russia is consolidating their lines, they’re reinforcing. Vladimir Putin ordered the partial mobilization, 300,000 reservists have been called up, 87,000 of them are currently deployed into the special military operations zone, the rest are finalizing their organization into fresh combat units, which will give the Russians tremendous flexibility and operational capacity. So as Ukraine is shrinking its combat capability, Russia is increasing its combat capability."*
It's important to note here that because of the status of the "special military operation" in Ukraine Russia is actually limited to the type and amount of soldiers it can deploy to Ukraine and so far the vast majority of the Russian forces have been reserve units from the peripheries of the country. [Here](https://mronline.org/2022/06/23/is-the-west-finally-realizing-that-russia-will-win-the-war-in-ukraine/) is a more realistic analysis of the initial invasion and describes the tactical intent of the Russian advances of the early days of the war were, not to over take all of Ukraine, but create a land bridge between the Donbass and Crimea and the rapid advance towards Kyiv was intended to bring the Zelenskyy government to negotiations but once Mariupol fell, this became less important and the Russians re-deployed East to face the bulk of the Ukrainian military and hold the Donbass. In this way Russia also dictated the pace of the fighting and once their land bridge had been established the Russians more or less dug in to their positions and allow the Ukrainian military to throw themselves at their positions and use their long range weapons systems and mass artillery to inflict severe casualties on the Ukrainians. As noted in my initial article, Zelenskyy was ready to negotiate in April of 2022 but a sudden visit from Boris Johnson prevented the Zelenskyy government from doing so and instead pursued the path of war.
This "sit and wait" approach is most evident at Bakhmut in which [Ukraine suffers 800 casualties a day](https://www.moonofalabama.org/2022/12/ukraine-sitrep-catastrophic-losses-failing-wonder-weapons-nato-escalation.html) trying to push the Russians back and where Russia maintains a 9:1 advantage in artillery support. This simply isn't sustainable and the Ukrainian military leadership is already finding it difficult to "regenerate" its losses. Compounding this is [Official corruption in Kyiv](https://thegrayzone.com/2022/08/18/ukraine-veterans-us-aid-soldiers-war/). The Zelenskyy government generously gave themselves a 70% salary increase while Ukrainian soldiers are paying for their own equipment and are forced to use personal vehicles on the battlefield, commanders are even hesitant to commit certain types of equipment to the field in fear of having it destroyed while soldiers are sharing 1 rifle between 2 people. All the while weapons intended for Ukraine are appearing in Africa. As a former diplomat stated "[The US is fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian](https://thegrayzone.com/2022/03/24/us-fighting-russia-to-the-last-ukrainian-veteran-us-diplomat/)."
The media, however, continues to beat the drums of war and paint the situation as untenable for Russia and commonly accuses Russia of "resorting" to intentionally attacking innocent civilians. [Newsweeks itself](https://www.newsweek.com/putins-bombers-could-devastate-ukraine-hes-holding-back-heres-why-1690494) published an article debunking this. The evidence and facts on the ground point in the opposite direction. [Economically, Europe is suffering](http://www.ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/featured-articles/2022/july/27/ukraine-is-losing-the-war-and-so-is-europe/) because of typical over confidence in Europes and NATO's leaders.
Overall, the situation is playing to Russias favor. So, now we come to the question of nuclear weapons. Right at the beginning of the war Russia was almost immediately accused of nuclear sabre rattling and I will go back to Scott Ritter on this;
*> " But they(Russia) have other hypersonics, something called the avant garde, which is currently deployed on ICBMs, intercontinental ballistic missiles. They have three to five avant gardes per missile. They don’t have to be nuclear. They could be non-nuclear. So Russia has the ability right now to fire a road mobile ballistic missile with five hypersonic warheads that could come down and hit five targets in Europe per missile. They have hundreds of these missiles. Russia can annihilate Europe overnight in a non-nuclear attack. And this is the message that Russia was sending, but we immediately said, no, no, no, that’s nuclear. He’s threatening the use of nuclear weapons. Russian doctrine is quite clear. There’s only two conditions under which they can use nuclear weapons: one is if a nation uses nuclear weapons against them, and the second is if, through conventional forces, nations threaten the very existence of Russia.*
*Getting involved in Ukraine does not threaten the very existence of Russia, but it does threaten the very existence of Europe in a non-nuclear retaliation. But Europe misunderstood this, the West, and we’ve been hyping this up. Russia has made it clear they will never, there’s no circumstance under which they would ever use nuclear weapons in Ukraine against Ukraine, against NATO. They won’t use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine. If it comes down to time to use nuclear weapons, they’re not going to nuke Kyiv, they’re going to nuke London, they’re going to nuke Paris, they’re going to nuke Berlin. They’re not going to nuke Kyiv. So the West has totally misconstrued this, totally misunderstood this, and it’s the West that’s done the most aggressive behavior here. One, you have Zelenskyy giving a speech where he basically begs the West to carry out a preemptive strike, a nuclear strike, some people implied, against Russia to prevent them from nuking Ukraine. So Zelenskyy uses a false premise, that Russia’s going to nuke Ukraine. Russia will never (nuke) Ukraine. But to prevent something that Russia will never do, he wants the West to nuke Russia preemptively."*
So, again, we have a former American official condemning the escalation coming from NATO and the US while they are accusing Russia of what they are themselves doing. It's becoming apparent that an accusation by the US is an admittance of guilt. The US has been the one that ripped up former nuclear treaties and then accuses others of behaving belligerently. We saw the same situation unfold with North Korea and their nuclear program in the early 2000's.
If you read my other articles you will see a clear pattern of intentional provocations and escalations by the US and it's role in getting us to where we currently stand. Now all this isn't to say Russia is the good guy. Quite the contrary. The point is to highlight the fact that we are being intentionally driven to our own destruction for the profit of wallstreet. Ukrainians are being used as pawns to draw public support to pave the way for World War 3. Given Obama's "Pivot to the East" strategy and the recent escalation around Taiwan this should be a little more clear. We need to oppose imperialism wherever it appears.

We are about to reach peak oil that is absolutely important for our agriculture - especially artificial fertilizer. Then we have climate change, soil erosion, soil depletion of nutrients etc etc. And by 2050 we are expecting 10 Billion + people.
Sustainably we could perhaps feed 4-5 Billion people. To feed 8 Billion or 10 Billion we need a perfectly functioning system that gets everything out of the soil and is artificially boosted by fertilizer at the expense of future generations. So yes we are overpopulated and soon it will come back to bite us because people were in denial.

All too often we see the term, “faster than expected” used to describe the speed at which our climate changes. We see it so often, in fact, that it has become a meme in this community! So, I was scrolling one day as usual and was reading all the comments with everyone joking around about the term faster than expected. I thought to myself, “I want to wear this message on a shirt, because it represents what I believe in!” Turns out, the shirt didn’t yet exist. The only design out there was just boring text.
So, I hopped on Fiverr, had a cool design made, then hopped on Printify to find eco-friendly direct-to-garment options (cue waiting for my sample to arrive to make sure it wasn’t crappy quality), then finally, I made a Shopify account! And now here I am! I offer you a small little eco-friendly print on demand store to purchase exactly what I wanted just a few weeks ago! A shirt to represent how I feel inside! They come in hoodies, shirts, and cropped shirts and in whatever colors I thought looked cool!
Yes, this is \*technically\* an ad, but both myself and the moderators agreed that my design may offer some value to this community, for those who want to represent their internal screaming on the OUTSIDE. I’m not doing this to make money. I originally only did it so I could own a shirt I thought of and really wanted, then figured maybe other people like me would want my design. … oh, and this is related to collapse because, “faster than expected” is read every day, in almost every single collapse post. Studies always underestimate our situation, which makes sense. Nobody wants to be wrong. But what it leads to is a misunderstanding of how dire our planet’s situation really is. Which only worsens the effects of climate change, because actions taken are less urgent... Until the next article that’s maybe a little bit more accurate to how bad things are about to get.
