If one had to point to a single issue as to what made America great, it just might be our public school education system. It guarantees every child the opportunity to advance at one’s own level with no restriction on what one might achieve, providing they have the ability to maintain reasonable standards of productivity.
Even though America’s most challenging period, Jim Crow, when black children were segregated and shunted aside to ‘Separate, but equal’ schools, (Which were separate, but not at all equal) a basic level of learning was realized.
*Public* funding (tax dollars) provided the wherewithal to fund *public* *schools,* and although challenged by problems that beset any large institution it did achieve, according to the Census Bureau, a literacy rate of 86%, at near the top of all the nations of the world.
But now a dual education proposal is challenging the public system all across America; the threat? Vouchers!
The scheme is as simple as this. The proponents intend to siphon off tax dollars meant for public education and divert it to private academies and prep schools that cater to the well-to-do, and the wealthy. They hire public relations firms to concoct ridiculous stories about a grassroots movement supporting the plot, when in fact right-wing plutocrats fund the program in order to further the separations between the rich and the poor.
Each day we read about heroic, *underpaid,* teachers and administrators reaching into their own pockets just to provide the basics, pencils, and paper, for their already underfunded schools. But now, with pristine arrogance, and even before those items can be procured, they want the public dollars to go to travel lacrosse teams and racing shells for their already privileged children.
And to make matters worse, there is no accountability for those funds. Whereas public schools have to meet certain standards of learning, give tests, adhere to standards, and face sanctions if goals aren’t reached, no such rules apply to most voucher projects.
*Public* tax dollars for *public* schools and not for the enrichment of *private* institutions!

Parks and Recreation voucher?My family has chosen to join the Urbandale Golf & Country Club after realizing that the municipal, county and state park systems simply were not fulfilling our recreational needs. I emailed Grassley because of his NO vote on marriage equality. This is his response.I appreciate hearing of your support for the Respect for Marriage Act. This bill would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed in 1996 and established a federal definition of “marriage” as a legal union between one man and one woman. In United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court held in 2013 that this section of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. Then, in 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that it is unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment for a state not to perform same-sex marriages or not to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
The Respect for Marriage Act would prohibit a state from not recognizing a marriage between two individuals validly entered into in another state on the basis of the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of those individuals. It would also require that the federal government recognize every marriage between two people that was validly entered into under the laws of any state. The legislation would also allow either the Justice Department or those affected by alleged violations to sue in federal court.
The Respect for Marriage Act passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 19, 2022. On November 16, 2022, the Senate voted 62-37 to advance the bill. I voted against advancing the measure. Final votes are expected to take place the week after Thanksgiving.
But I want all Iowans to know that interracial and same-sex marriages are not under threat, and I don’t support reversing the federal recognition of these marriages. To be clear, there is no effort in Congress or the courts to overturn Loving v. Virginia, which recognizes interracial marriages, or Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognizes same-sex marriages. Justice Stephen Breyer, who retired from the Supreme Court earlier this year, recently explained that he did not think the Court would overturn those cases. Nor do I believe that the Supreme Court would reverse these cases even if they were challenged, and I don’t believe it is prudent for politicians to imply otherwise in order to fabricate unnecessary discontent in our nation.
My vote against this bill is not about opposing the recognition of same-sex or interracial marriages; it’s about defending the religious liberty enshrined in our founding documents. The bill does not address religious liberty concerns raised by social service providers, including foster care organizations, serving their communities consistent with their sincerely held religious beliefs. Many groups expressed concern that the bill, including the private right of action, would increase efforts to harass or undermine those organizations. Nor does the bill address concerns with lawsuits against wedding vendors who wish to provide services to or participate in only weddings that are consistent with their sincerely held religious beliefs regarding marriage. Moreover, many organizations raised concerns that the bill does not adequately protect the tax-exempt status of religious organizations. The bill’s sponsors rejected proposals to add language that would have provided protections for religious liberty by allowing people to sue the federal government for discriminating against them, including for taking away an organization’s tax-exempt status, because of their sincerely held religious beliefs.
This legislation is simply unnecessary. No one seriously thinks Obergefell is going to be overturned, so we don’t need legislation. 1. I tried calling Iowa Green Americorps for their free home energy assessment and weatherization program twice over 2 weeks, no one ever returned the call.
2. I tried calling the Iowa Utilities Board over some shit Alliant was pulling, not only are they a totally feckless organization, anytime you try to call, after about 5 minutes it says "due to high call volume, we cannot take your call at this time".
3. I used to be able to see my primary doctor in a week, now it's 30-45 days out for an appointment. ER is unable to help for anything non-serious, they say to go to urgent care, who don't really have much to help you with either, they will just say "follow up with PCP". Seems like Iowa's healthcare regimen is "if your not dying, wait a couple months to see if it goes away, then we will send you to a specialist who is probably a month out as well". Two doctors have left my clinic "unexpectedly".
4. The dentist I was seeing at the UofI "left unexpectedly" and now it's going to be a few months before I can be seen by another one. Guess my filings weren't that important..
5. Mental health doctor suspected I had autism and wanted to test me for it, there's currently a YEAR LONG WAITING LIST..not making this up..a fucking YEAR LONG waiting list.
This state is losing good teachers, doctors and other professionals left and right. I own a home so it would be too hard to just "up and leave", but I'm really worried about the state of our state.

Republicans, especially Reynolds, like taking away the rights of public workers (apart from law enforcement, notably) and it makes me sad to be an Iowan. I don’t want to give up my dream of teaching but our politicians make it harder to want to be a teacher. I want to hold on but it’s as if Reynolds is stepping on the one hand keeping me on the cliff.

Ames is in IA-4, when it should be IA-3 with Des Moines. But it's "cracked and packed" so that Ames is shoved with super conservative NW IA. The state is divided in a way to make it hard for the Dems when there are many Dem voters in the state. It's all about the way the districts are drawn. That determines the outcome of an election more than any other factor.

Notice ServedRepublicans, today I voted a complete Democratic ticket. I have been a Republican for over 50 years. Ever since I could first vote. But you lost me. Not one of you, at any level, stood up to the stupidity and insanity that has become the national and state level of the Republican party. From Trump down to Kim Reynolds, you have pushed the boundaries of human rights. And therefore, those other minor roles in government, local ones, have followed like lemmings. If you are a judge, an auditor or whatever, and you had the Republican tag, I voted AGAINST you. Because you stood silent. And yes, if you are a Libertarian, I voted against you because you don't know reality.
Edit: To clarify, this is the first time I voted locally R. I haven't voted R nationally for several elections. It is interesting to see the reactions here. Some congratulate me for "coming around" while some chastise me for being stupid to begin with. I can see how the latter people would interact in their daily life. Telling their kids, their fellow workers and strangers that they are dumb for making past decisions. Acting superior. Tearing down and not building up. But a lot redditors are like that.
